Chapter 7: Fitting in
Chase was speeding down the road, his irritation slowly rising as his brother continued to stare at him intently for the past half-hour now. After school was over, Kel was the first to race out the door with Chase close behind. When they were out of eye-sight, they teleported to a forest out of town, not wanting to risk someone seeing Kel go all Hannibal on some poor defenseless animal. Chase waited for him to finish before they both teleported back to the school to get their car. Chase hadn't spoken a word concerning the classroom incident since they left the school, which resulted in the annoying little looks his brother kept shooting in his direction.
Chase signed loudly before turning to glare at his brother. “What!” he hissed sharply.
Kel's expression remained unfazed by his brother's outburst, his eye brow arching slightly. “You gonna tell me what's going on between you and the witch?” he asked bluntly.
Chase scowled fighting back the growl threatening to slip loose. “Nothing, she's just an annoying little bitch, kind of like you, no big deal.” He informed, irritation lining the edge of his voice.
Kel couldn't help the smirked that twitched up the corner of his mouth. “You like her.” He stated boldly.
“What!?” Chase yelled his eyes flashing. “I so do NOT like that little bitch! Where the hell did you get a foolish idea like that from?” he asked, his gaze shifting between his brother and the road.
“From you,” Kel shot back evenly. Sensing his brother's confusion he continued.
“You've been thinking about her since we left the school,” he stated casually trying to hold back his grin.
Chase's hand tightened around the steering wheel, his eyes turning hard before fixing on the road. “Stay out of my head, Kel.”
“So you don't deny you've been thinking about her?” Kel continued inquisitively.
Chase clenched his jaw, causing it to tick while remaining silent. Kel couldn't help but smiled to himself. He's never seen his brother react like this towards a mortal woman before, and a witch no less. Deciding it would be best to drop the subject for now, the two rode home in silence.
Sage's P.O.V
Sage sat in the middle of her grandmother's living room, surrounded by crystals and weird symbols. After her little outburst at school, her mother went into “witch protection mode”, which landed her at her grandmother's house for the next month or so. Her grandmother was the most knowledgeable and experienced witch in the family, and if anyone could teach Sage how to control her raging powers, it was her.
Sage sat cross-legged in the middle of the pentagram trying to focus her energy. Today, she was honing her water element abilities and learning how to turn it into ice. Her mother once told her that water was the easiest element to control for most witches, but as it turns out, that rule didn't apply to her. She was always more skilled at fire and wind, while earth remained to be the most challenging element to master. She wrecked her brain trying to remember the tips her grandmother had given her before they started, but was currently drawing a blank for one simple reason.
“You think just because a guy turns you down that he must be gay. Well, I got news for you princess, the sun doesn't rise and set on your conceited ass, and you ain't the only bitch in this school. So I highly suggest you get over yourself and let it the fuck go. Besides…it's not my fault you chose to believe an obvious lie as a pathetic attempt to make yourself feel better because you got rejected.”
Sage felt her blood boil just from thinking about what he had said to her earlier in class.
“That jerk! Where does he get off talking to me like that? He doesn't know a god damn thing about me, the prick.” She seethed to herself, paying no attention to the melting ice that was now reduced to a pool of water on the floor.
“You aren't paying attention young lady.” Her grandmother said, snapping her out of her thoughts. “We're practicing water and ice, not fire.”
“Sorry Nana, I'm just—”
“Distracted? Yes, I know.” She replied with a soft chuckle. “I think that's enough for today, you're free to go honey.”
Her grandmother kissed her on the forehead before leaving the room. Sage made her way up to her bedroom, flopping face down on the bed.
“What's the matter with me…why can't I stop thinking about him?” she thought confusingly. “I mean…there's no way I can like that jerk after what he said to me… right?”
Sage let out a long sigh, allowing the tension to leave her body as her eyes slowly drifted shut. “I'll just forget about him and concentrate on Mark, he's a jackass anyways.” She decided as she felt her eye lids becoming heavier before drifting off into a peaceful slumber.
Chase's P.O.V
Chase and Kel pulled into the school parking lot the next day, only to see a selection of very impressive cars lining the back row of the lot, no doubt belonging to the demons they would soon become aquatinted with.
“They're not very inconspicuous are they,” Kel said dryly. Chase scoffed in agreement as both brothers stepped out of the vehicle and made their way towards the school.
“I bet you I can piss off dog boy within 5 minutes today,” Chase challenged with an amused grin forming on his face.
“I bet you can do it within 5 seconds, but that is not our goal. We are to watch them, and evaluate the situation w—”
“Without any unnecessary exposure, blah blah blah…I heard you the first time,” Chase interrupted with a roll of his eyes. “God, you're starting to act like Craven. I'm already having difficulty determining which stick is bigger, the one rammed up his ass or yours.”
Kel glared at his brother. “Just stick to the plan, jackass.” He replied sharply before both brothers parted ways.
As Chase approached his locker he couldn't help but notice the little witch bending down to put her books into her bag, giving him a wonderful view of her black lace panties under her skirt. He had to admit, she had quite a body. He let his eyes slowly wander down her body, noticing her large round, firm breast that would fit perfectly in his hands. His eyes continued on their downward path, taking in her flat toned stomach and shapely long legs that could easily wrap around his waist as he roughly pounds into—
“What the fuck is wrong with me?” he thought abruptly stopping his imagination from going any further. “I wouldn't put my cock in that bitch even if her pussy was the last one in all the realms…well…maybe if it was the LAST one.”
Suddenly, he noticed that she wasn't alone. A demon stood beside her, holding her books while leaning casually on his locker. The guy, a wolf demon by the looks of it, leaned into Sage whispering something in her ear that made her blush and push him away playfully.
Chase felt the growl low in his throat forming. “I don't like this little cock-sucker,” he thought before walking over to his locker. As he drew closer, he noticed Sage glance at him out of the corner of her eye, an anxious look flickering across her face briefly before disappearing. The wolf demon didn't seem to notice as Chase appeared behind him, patiently waiting for him to move.
“Excuse me.” He said after clearing his throat, his tone hard.
The wolf demon turned to look at Chase as if the mere action of doing so was a burden on his soul. “Can't you see we're talking here?” he asked annoyed before turning away to resume his conversation.
“Well…I tried it the Kel way,” Chase thought as his gaze narrowed dangerously.
“Oh, did I say excuse me? My bad…I meant move,” he continued his light tone turning dark, “Now.”
The wolf demon slowly turned around as if for dramatic effect, causing Chase to inwardly roll his eyes. “What did you just say to me?” he growled.
Chase looked on with a bored expression. “What, are you fucking deaf? I'm not standing that far, dumbass. Now get your mongrel-looking ass out of my way before I really lose my patience and do it for you,” he replied calmly.
The wolf took a threatening step forward until he was standing directly in Chase's face.
“Well I gotta say,” He replied smoothly putting on his best tough guy front, “I'd love to see you do it for me.”
Chase flashed his trademark grin, “Oh trust me…you really don't,” he replied.
“Mark! Stop it,” Sage intervened putting herself between the two demons.
“Yeah, Mark. Stop it!” Chase mocked in a whiny tone, imitating Sage's voice.
“Chase!” she snapped whipping around to glare at him. “Just go away.”
“Oh, I would love to. I'll just pick my locker up and— no wait…that's right…IT'S ATTACHED TO THE FUCKING WALL YOU DUMB BITCH!” Chase shouted, his patience finally slipping.
“I'm beginning to think this girl really is retarded,” he thought irritably to himself.
Suddenly, Mark pushed Sage behind him only to grab Chase by his jacket and slam him into the locker. Chase looked at him as if unfazed by the action. He watched as Mark pulled his fist back with the intention of slamming it into his face. Before the fist could make impact with his face, Chase caught it effortlessly in one hand, breaking it with a mere flick of his wrist.
A loud crack was heard as Mark yelled out in agony and dropped to his knees, Chase throwing his now broken hand back at him before readjusting his jacket.
“Don't touch me.” He said evenly before turning to open his locker.
“Mark Don't!” Sage suddenly yelled. Just as Mark was about to get up, preparing to lunge himself at Chase, a hand pulled him back by the collar of his jacket.
“What seems to be the problem here boys?” Scar asked looking between the two, Stefan and Shawn standing behind him.
“Well, you see…” Chase began, “I can't seem to find my math book.” He shot over his shoulder with his best fake, innocent smile in place.
Scar stared at Chase, a grin suddenly appearing on his face. “For a guy that claims to do nothing wrong, you sure do find yourself in trouble a lot.”
Chase's grin widened, “What can I say? I'm just a people person.”
“What happened to your hand Mark?” Stefan asked looking down at Mark clutching his hand to his chest.
“He broke it,” he hissed through gritted teeth, glaring at Chase.
“I barely touched him, honest,” Chase said innocently.
Scar turned to look at Mark. “I don't know what happened, and I don't really care. How do you expect to join us when you can't even handle yourself in a little school yard scrap?” he said harshly, his gaze narrowing.
“But he—”
“Are you seriously about to start whining… to me? If this was a real battle you'd be dead already, and here you are crying over a broken hand? Are you fucking serious?” Scar asked incredulously
“I'm not crying over anything, I'm just trying to explain myself.” Marked shot back heatedly.
Scar's eyes flashed angrily. “Don't raise your voice at me, boy! I don't need to hear you explain shit. Now get out of my face, and don't bother coming to your initiation either because I highly doubt you'd be able to pass anyways.” He replied, turning his back on Mark.
Mark hung his head in shame, quickly glancing around the hall to see everyone now staring openly at his embarrassment by the hands of both Scar and the new kid. He shot one last glare at Chase before stomping away.
Scar then looked up at Chase, Sage standing behind him with a scowl on her face.
“Chase, you're such a frigging jerk!” she said slamming his locker shut in front of him, forcing him to look at her. “I'm beginning to think you're going out of your way to piss me off!”
“I didn't do anything wrong, little witch. If you feel like bitching to someone go find your boyfriend, it's not my problem if you have anger management issues… or bad taste in guys for that matter.” He replied with a smirk.
Sage was fuming with anger as she continued her tirade, for some reason she just couldn't stay calm around this guy. Regardless of how hard she tried, he always manages to get under her skin.
Chase stared at her intently as she continued to yell at him, “Damn, she's hot…” he thought suddenly.
“Sage, who's your friend?” Stefan asked, interrupting her rant.
“Friend? No, no, no…we're not friends!” she retorted still glaring at Chase.
“Okay, then who's the random guy you're cussing?” Shawn rephrased, who was also a half dog demon.
Chase turned to face the group of demons, “The random guy is standing right here, why don't you ask him yourself?” he said with amusement clearly written across his face.
Shawn growled at him as Scar let out a light hearted chuckle.
“What's your name, kid” he asked.
“Kid?” Chase thought bitterly, “I'm as old as God you little shit.” He then plastered on a fake smile before replying, choosing to let the comment slide.
“Chase, Chase Williams.” He replied causally.
“Scar Lockwood, this is Stefan and Shawn,” Scar introduced.
“When did you first move here?” Stefan asked causally with a hint of suspicion in his voice.
“A few days ago, that night we met was our first day in town.” Chase replied
The demons continued to look at him as if he were hiding something, not that he could blame them because he was.
“Our?” Shawn asked
“Me and my brother,” He quickly informed.
Scar nodded in understanding. “Yeah I remember seeing him. Not many spirit demons in this town aside from Stefan here,” Scar said nodding towards the demon to his right.
“Shit…”Chase swore silently. They didn't really know much about these tainted demons, much less what each one was suppose to look like, and if they were suppose to look like Stefan then this might be a problem.
Stefan's eyes we're dark purple, his pupils were fully dilated leaving behind very little white areas and he had a thin, purple stripe on both sides of his cheeks. To say that he and Kel looked nothing like the spirit demon currently standing in front of him, would be an understatement. Stefan's features were dark, whereas theirs were bright and vibrant.
“What kind of spirit demon are you?” Stefan asked curiously, clearly confused by his lack of typical spirit demon traits.
“There are different kinds? Are you frigging kidding me?!” Chase thought incredulously.
Chase quickly connected his mind to Kel's, hoping his brother would be able to help him out. “Kel, what kind of spirit demons are we?”
“There are different kinds? Kel asked bemused.
“Oh, fuck me. Never mind!” Chase said cutting off their link.
“We're…you know…” Chase said trying to stall has he swept through Stefan's mind quickly for anything that would help. He then found out that Stefan was a vengeful spirit, and spirits with their type of coloring were usually water or fire spirits. Chase figured being a water spirit would explain his own appearance but not Kel's, which would draw further suspicion.
“Our father is a fire spirit demon and our mother is a water spirit. So we're kind of half and half. I look more like my mother, whereas Kel takes after our father.” He replied quickly. He knew that they wouldn't be able to tell if he was lying or not, which meant they would have no choice but to buy what he was feeding them.
“I see,” Stefan said nodding in understanding, though still appearing doubtful.
“I thought you said it was just you and your brother living here?” Scar asked abruptly.
“Well, aren't we sharp,” Chase thought before turning to face him.
“It is. Our parents are dead.” Chase said in an even tone, hoping that they would feel bad for prying and move the fuck on. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Sage shoot him a sympatric look.
“Well, I'm sorry to hear that,” Scar replied although whether it was sincere or not, Chase couldn't tell. “I guess we'll be seeing you guys around then, later.” He said before walking off with the other two in tow.
Chase turned back around, glancing down at Sage.
“Your still here?” he asked in a serious tone. “You know, I'm beginning to think you like me.” He said flashing her one of his dazzling smiles.
Sage blushed lightly, “why would I like an ass like you? I just wasn't finished yelling at you yet,” she declared.
“Well the bell's about to ring, so feel free to yell like a banshee until we reach homeroom. Just don't break anymore windows.” He replied grinning down at her.
“Ha, ha.” She replied sarcastically. “Would it kill you to be a little nicer to me?”
“I don't like witches, so I don't need to be nice to you. Besides, if I was nice to you then you might assume I actually like you, and we can't have that, now can we?” He replied dryly.
Sage rolled her eyes, “What do you have against witches?”
“Nothing, just that you're all nasty, annoying little whores…no offense,” he said coolly.
Sage gazed at him incredulously. “How am I not suppose to take offense to that?! You just called me a nasty little whore!”
“No…I called you a nasty, annoying, little whore,” he corrected.
“You don't even know me.” She shot back.
“And I don't want to.” He said before walking into the classroom and taking his seat.
Sage's P.O.V
“He is un-fucking-believable.” Sage thought before taking her seat in front of him. “I give up.”
Suddenly, she felt Chase lean forward in his seat, his breath brushing against her neck. “So, was that your man back there?” He whispered in her ear, his husky voice causing shivers to run down her spine.
“N—no…he's just a friend,” she replied instantly.
“Why the fuck did I just say that?! I should have said yes!” She thought mentally scolding herself for her slip.
“Good,” he replied before leaning back in his chair.
Sage was now utterly confused. First, he makes it clear that he wants nothing to do with her, and now he's happy that she doesn't have a boyfriend? What kind of game was he playing?
They sat through the rest of the class in silence, but Sage could feel his heated gaze on her the entire time. She was almost tempted to turn around and ask him what the hell his problem was but couldn't bring herself to do it. She would never admit it out loud, but he intimidated her. She wasn't sure why, but she was sure that he wasn't a normal demon.
She's seen Mark fight countless times over the years, his tough guy attitude often getting the best of him, yet she's never witnessed someone take him out so easily, and without flinching no less. When he was talking to Scar and the others he mentioned that he was a spirit demon, like Stefan, yet she couldn't see his demonic aura like the others. Scar's was red, Stefan's was purple, Shawn's was black and Chase's was…nothing. He just didn't have one. Then there was the way he hesitated when Stefan had asked him what kind of demon he was, but the others didn't seem to notice.
Maybe she was over analyzing the situation, or maybe it was her witchy powers acting up again, but she had a feeling that both Chase and his brother were hiding something. She knew that he was a total ass, probably the biggest ass she's ever met, yet she couldn't deny her attraction to him.
The bell rang, snapping her out of her thoughts. She grabbed her books and went to stand when a student passing by bumped her, causing her to drop her books. Sage released an annoyed sigh before bending down to retrieve her things. She was surprised to see a figure bend down to lend her a hand, and looked up to thank whoever it was.
“Thank—” She stopped, her shocked gaze meeting Chase's icy blue ones as he handed her the rest of her books.
He flashed her a crocked grin before replying. “Kids today, got no manners,” he said before standing and leaving the room.
Sage didn't know why such a simple gesture made her smile, but it did.
“Maybe there's hope for him yet.” She thought before leaving the room as well.
