Chapter 9: Familiar Faces
Kel's P.O.V
Kel hurriedly made has way towards the back exist of the school. He knew Chase had a free period right now and would no doubt be using it to find his meal for the day. Kel, at the moment, was suppose to be attending his calculus class, but he had a more pressing issue to deal with, one he never expected.
“What is she?” He thought becoming frustrated with himself. “There is no way in hell she's just an ordinary witch…”
It was mere child's play for him and his brothers to identify certain mixtures of creatures or species within the different realms, all of which are vulnerable to their compulsion abilities. As far as Kel was concerned, there were only four beings in existence, himself included, who were immune to such power and he happens to be related to them.
Kel released a growl of frustration as he made his way around the back of the school and into a small forest area. “Well, this just further explains the shift of balance in this god forsaken realm…” he confirmed silently.
Kel made his way through the forest, following his brother's scent to a small clearing. And there he was…draining the life from the caption of the cheerleading squad.
The girl was undoubtedly in a trance, her eyes dull and empty, but what surprised Kel the most was that she still had her cheerleading uniform on and in one piece no less. Chase had his fangs buried deep within the girl's neck, taking his fill of her blood. Kel waited for him to finish, watching as he pulled away reluctantly.
Chase slowly ran his tongue along the bite marks, watching it heal two seconds later. He then forced her eyes to meet his. “Forget what just happened…you were never with me today.” He commanded. The girl nodded dumbly before Chase released her and sent her on her way.
Kel quirked an eyebrow at him questioningly, clearly confused as to why he chose to let the girl go and not kill her.
Chase licked the blood from his lips, the corners of his mouth tilting into a slight smirk as he turned to address his brother. “Can't have the locals going missing now can we? If I killed everyone I fed on this entire town would be dry within 2 weeks…and I don't feel like teleporting all over the fucking globe chasing down my food,” He explained.
Kel shook his head, not in the mood to reprimand his brother on his eating habits.
“We've got problems.” Kel said in a serious tone.
“How'd your little date with the witch go?” Chase growled ignoring the words as though they were never spoken.
Kel rolled his eyes, only his brother would define walking down the school corridor as a date.
“Yes, Chase. After our romantic 10 minute walk down the hallway, I asked her to marry me and bear my children, and now I've come to ask if you would be my best man at the wedding. I mean… I would ask Craven but you know how he is—”
“Okay I get it!” Chased yelled now glaring at his brother. “You're such a dick.”
“A trait I inherited from your bitch ass, now pay attention.” Kel replied smoothly.
Chase continued to glare at him but remained quiet none the less, indicating that he was now listening.
“During my little walk with the witch, I may have accidentally let something slip concerning you,” Kel explained casually.
Chase's glare intensified as he took a step towards his brother. “You were talking about me to the witch? What did you say Kel?” Chase said his anger rising.
“Nothing much really…I merely insinuated that you were a whore,” Kel replied with a hint of amusement behind his usual wry tone.
“You did what? How the fuck did that come up?!” Chase barked.
“We were just having a casual conversation—”
“That isn't exactly causal conversation material Kel! What did you say, “I hear it's gonna rain today and, oh, by the way— CHASE LIKES TO FUCK EVERYTHING WITH A HOLE!”
“Your words not mine…” Kel replied.
“Kel!” Chase growled out.
“I don't know why you're getting so worked up. Why do you care if she thinks you're a whore?” He asked curiously, though he already knew the answer.
Chase abruptly stopped his rant, turning away from his brother. “I don't,” he scoffed. “I just don't like you spreading my business.”
Kel resisted the urge to smile. “Yeah, that must be it. Anyways, that wasn't what I came to tell you.”
“Get on with it then,” Chase said clearly annoyed.
“I figured you'd be pissed about my slip, so I tried to compel her to forget—”
“Tried? Chase said arching an eyebrow skeptically.
“Will you shut the fuck up and let me finish?” Kel retorted.
Chase rolled his eyes and signaled for him to continue. “I tried to compel her and it didn't work. She looked at me like I was retarded and asked what was wrong with my eyes.” Kel finished.
A moment of silence then passed between the two as Chase tried to digest the information he was being fed.
“Oh fuck…” Chase replied breaking the silence.
“That's what I said.” Kel replied.
“That's impossible, and even if it wasn't, she's just a normal witch who hasn't even grown into her powers yet. Are you sure you did it properly?” Chase asked.
Kel shot him an “are you stupid” kind of look, not even bothering to offer a reply. Chase ran a hand through his spiky white hair while pacing the forest floor.
“Alright, I'll keep an eye on the witch…this might have something to do with the balance shift for all we know. So let's not jump to any conclusions,” Chase said attempting to get a handle on the situation.
“I was thinking the same thing. Just another problem to add to our growing list, and we've only been here 3 days” Kel sighed running a hand wearily down his face.
“One thing at a time, little brother. Try getting closer to that Mia girl too, they're best friends so she might know something— don't look at me like that” Chase said grinning at his brother's angry scowl.
“Why don't you get closer to her?” Kel asked his gaze narrowing.
“She doesn't want my dick, she wants yours. Now stop being a pussy and take one for the team.” Chase replied with a bright smile.
Kel mumbled a string of profanities under his breathe, mostly directed at his brother. “What did you two talk about after I left with Sage?” he asked suspiciously.
Chase's smile widened. “I gave her some tips on ways to rape you.”
Kel growled low in his throat before turning and heading back the way he came, his brother's laughter echoing from behind as he followed him out of the forest. Kel wouldn't put it past his brother to do just what he claimed he did, which is why he knew Chase wasn't lying.
“So she can't be compelled…interesting.” Chase thought as his gaze repeatedly shifted in Sage's direction. He was currently sitting in his last class of the day, the class they all shared. Sage had barely glanced in his direction all period, and blushing deeply every time she did.
“What the hell did you tell her, Kel?” he shot to his brother sitting beside him.
“I told her you like to wear women's panties because they make you feel pretty,” Kel replied dryly with a devious smirk forming on his face, which earned him a heated glare in return.
Chase knew he was being foolish. What the hell did he care anyways? Immune to compulsion or not, he could easily handle one little witch. There was also a part of him that wanted to get closer to her, and no matter how hard he tried to push those feelings aside, they kept creeping back up.
Suddenly, Chase and Kel's heads shot up at the same time, shooting each other a quick glance before looking towards the door. Five minutes later, both brothers remained tense as the class got settled into a work period. It was then that the classroom door flung open and a tall figure stepped in.
“Ace, you're late. Skipping the first day of school is one thing young man, but I will not tolerate tardiness like this for the rest of the year,” the teacher scolded.
“Sorry… family emergency,” the boy replied sheepishly.
“How I look forward to hearing the same excuses week after week from your brother in a few years,” the teacher replied dryly. “Please take a seat.”
The boy made his way to the back of the class, Sage and Mia both smiling at him as he neared them.
“Hey Ace,” Sage greeted, “There's an empty seat beside me if you want.”
“Yeah, thanks,” he replied before turning to greet Mia. “Hey—” Ace suddenly froze, the color draining from his face as his pale red eyes fell on the two figures sitting a row over to Mia's left.
Sage and Mia both shared puzzled expressions, looking from Ace to the two demons sitting in the back.
“Do you guys know each other?” Mia asked.
Chase/Kel's P.O.V
It didn't take long for both brothers to realize who was walking down the hall towards their class; they just didn't understand why he was here. No sooner then they expected the classroom door flew open, revealing a very familiar face.
“And this day just keeps getting better.” Kel thought to Chase cynically.
“What he is doing in this realm? Does anyone follow the rules anymore! Was there a meeting that I missed?” Chase thought his eyes narrowing at Ace, who had yet to acknowledge their presence.
Both brothers watched as Sage and Mia greeted Ace, evidently already well acquainted with him.
Finally, his eyes met theirs. Kel was more then satisfied to see the fear flashing visibly in his eyes.
“Yeah you better be scared you little prick.” Kel thought his eyes narrowing dangerously.
“Play it cool.” Chase replied before putting on his best smile.
“Ace, what a surprise seeing you here. Small world, huh? Chase said making the hidden meaning behind his words as clear as possible.
Ace still remained standing as if not sure what he should be doing with himself in their presence. He nervously swallowed as his mouth became dry, an action that didn't go unnoticed by the brothers.
“Why don't you sit by us,” Kel hissed with more venom in his voice then he intended, “We have so much catching up to do.”
“W— what are you guys doing here,” Ace asked attempting to hide the slight quiver in his voice.
“Really…what are we doing here? Is that really the question you should be asking right now, kid?” Chase asked in an irritated tone, making a move to stand before Kel grabbed his arm to stop him.
Chase glanced down at his brother before returning his attention to Ace. “You know what…why don't we take this outside.” He said with a forced smile.
Ace stood his ground, the three staring each other down in silence as seconds ticked by.
Sage, sensing the hostility between the three, stepped in on her friend's behalf.
“I swear Chase, you are the biggest fucking bully I have ever met,” she said heatedly. “Do you have some kind of a goal to fight every guy within the local vicinity to see who has the bigger dick? Because I'm beginning to think you're over-compensating for something.” Sage said her eyes motioning towards his lower region.
Mia stifled her giggle, while Ace stared incredulously at her as if she had just insulted God himself.
Chase glared at her, wanting nothing more then to slam her pretty little face into the nearest wall.
“Now you listen to me little girl—”
“No, you listen to me!” Sage shot back, standing to face him as her voice raised. At this point, they had successfully gained the attention of the entire class, except for the teacher who had chosen earlier to step out for a while.
“I am so sick of your cocky, egotistical, ignorant ass!” she proclaimed seething with pent up rage. “Besides, you should quit while you're ahead. Ace isn't like Mark, so I suggest you save your bullshit for someone you actually stand a chance against.”
“She's right, I don't know what problems you guys have with each other but you should really stop,” Mia piped in.
Chase could almost feel the veins appearing around his pale blue eyes, as black slowly began to seep into them. He made sure to keep his head down allowing his spiky bangs to fall into his eyes, casting a dark shadow over his face. His fangs were now the only visible thing as he bit into his lower lip as an attempt to keep his temper in check.
The demons in the room couldn't sense it, but Kel and Ace sure could. Chase's demonic force was slowly intensifying. Kel remained unaffected by it, but noticed that Ace was now having trouble standing due to the pressure of Chase's energy. The kid looked like he was about to drop to his knees any minute now.
“Chase, calm down before you level this place.” Kel thought.
Chase noticeably took a deep breath to calm down, collecting himself before raising his head once again. His face was back to normal, not that anyone had seen any different.
His expression remained blank and cold as he turned to the witch. “So he can kick my ass, huh? What's the difference between him and Mark?” he asked his voice cold and hollow
There was a moment of silence before the class broke out into soft mummers. Mia looked at the two, her eyebrow rising slightly.
“Guys…we should really step out—” Ace began.
“Can't you guys tell? Ace isn't a normal demon.” Mia cut in as though it was the most obvious thing in the world.
As soon as the words left her mouth, Ace slowly closed his eyes, feeling the nails already being pounded into his coffin.
Chase and Kel looked at him, already anticipating the answer to their next question. “Oh, what is he then?” Kel asked dryly. He and Chase were now drilling holes into the boy, who suddenly found a hole in the floor incredibly fascinating to look at.
“He's a hell spawn, and way stronger then the two of you. So back off.” Sage replied naively sentencing her friend to death.
“What's going on in here—” the teacher said entering the class.
Suddenly, the lights in the room flickered as the teacher stood frozen mid-step. Every human and demon in the room was literarily frozen in time and unaware of everything taking place around them.
Kel shot up from his seat, his desk flying into the far wall as he appeared beside his brother, who had made quick work of wrapping his clawed hand around Ace's throat, slamming him viciously into the chalk broad across the room. The force which he was slammed into the wall caused it to fully crack from one end to the other, leaving it barely standing as it slowly began to crumble.
Both brothers' were fully transformed, showing their true demonic selves. They had thick, pulsing purple-reddish veins threatening to burst out from under their skin, surrounding their now completely pitch black eyes that had no traces of white left in them. Their fangs appeared to be larger and longer, barely touching their bottom lip. Their muscles were visibly bulging, both appearing physically bigger then before. Veins could also be seen appearing under the skin throughout their entire body, pulsing with power.
“You little shit…” Chase growled his voice now immensely deeper to the point where it was unrecognizable. The muscles in his arm twitched as his hand tightened around Ace's throat.
“We have rules, Ace. Rules we expect to be followed. Has someone put you under the impression that these rules don't apply to you?” Kel asked his voice cold and deep.
“N—no sir,” he whizzed out, grasping at Chase's hand to release his wind pipe.
“Then why are you in this realm, and revealing your identity no less!” Chase said while pulling Ace back and slamming him back into the wall. He screamed out in agony, blood dripping down a newly formed gash in his head.
“You know…I had an ounce of respect for you hell spawns because you are the closest thing to our kind, and here you are…proving that you are no better then the filth in this realm,” Kel spat with venom in his voice.
“P—please…” Ace begged as Chase slowly continued to crush his wind pipe.
“Please what? Chase asked evenly, “Please spear you of your miserable existence? We gave your kind their own realm to rule, and all you had to do was rule it. You were free to go and do as you please just as long as you didn't cross over into the human realms for long periods of time. We have dividing worlds for a reason, boy!” Chase shouted.
“These creatures aren't even supposed to know that our kind exist, and you're announcing it to the town? Are you fucking stupid? As if the tainted demons in this world haven't created a big enough pile of shit for us to clean, but now we have to wipe your ass too?” Kel said leaning his hand on the wall beside Ace's face, his fangs an inch away from tearing into him.
Ace was still struggling to breathe, on the verge of losing consciousness, when Chase slammed him onto the teacher's desk, his head cracking loudly against the wood rendering him unconscious. However, Kel used his power to force him back into a conscious state.
“No, no, no…where do you think you're going? Do we look like we're done talking here?” Kel asked his tone cynical and bitter.
“So, hell spawns running around, demons not concealing themselves to humans, humans COMPLETELY aware of everything, half breeds being born on a daily basis, and everyone living in perfect fucking harmony— did I miss anything, Kel?” Chase said dryly.
“Nope, that covers it. Wow, you guys must really love this world huh? Do you know that because of your stupidity it's now under the brink of destruction?” Kel replied. Ace glanced at him with a panic filled gaze, his face turning blue due to the lack of oxygen.
“Oh yeah,” Kel continued, “If we can't fix this shit soon, then this whole realm is going to self-destruct sooner rather then later…isn't that great?” he asked his voice becoming sinister.
“Is your brother with you Ace?” Chase asked his voice mirroring Kel's.
Ace nodded weakly, thankful that Chase loosed his grip in order to permit the simple act. “Are there more?” he continued. Ace nodded once again certain that he had no voice to speak with even if he wanted to.
Chase and Kel shared a look before gazing back down at the hell spawn.
“You have a lot of explaining to do, kid. And if you and your brother feel like living to see tomorrow…you'll cooperate, understand?” Chase demanded removing his hand from the boy's now bleeding throat.
Ace grasped at his throat to stop the blood flow before nodding weakly. Kel was just about to suggest returning the room to normal and erasing the minds of those who witnessed their little argument when they heard a floor broad creek.
Both brothers whipped their heads up simultaneously, black eyes and veins still in place, to see Sage and Mia firmly pressing them selves into the back wall as if hoping it would open and swallow them up. Their eyes widened with terror from what they had just witnessed while everyone else around them remained frozen in time… a power that apparently had no effect on them.
