Chapter 3 “A Disorder and A Vow”

“Thanks for the ride Mr… Mr… Umm…”

“Mr. Porter, You can just call me Porter though,” was the officers reply.

“Ok thanks Porter, see ya around.”

Ryan takes off running from the officer’s car and dashes into the college building. The other people inside watch in awe as he runs by at full speed through the hallways and even around corners. Ryan comes to a halt right in front of the door to his class and checks his watch.

“Man… I can’t believe this… This day just can’t get any worse. I didn’t get much sleep and I didn’t get a single chance to study those notes Jean gave me. Not to mention I’m already ten minutes late for the test. AHHHH I can’t take it anymore, I’m just going to walk straight in and sit down at my seat and begin testing.”

He lifts his head after assuring what he was going to do only to find the classroom door open and the teacher staring at him along with the whole class. With the realism that he had just been totally embarrassed in front of the whole class, he calmly walks over to the teacher’s desk and stands their awaiting directions. Some of the students were snickering and laughing quietly, some where exchanging whispers.

“That’s enough everyone. I’ll have you know that Ryan was late today because he saved an innocent woman’s life last night,” preached the teacher with the utmost authority. “If you all would like to keep your honor or dignity I suggest you get back to work on your tests immediately.”

The teacher then walked over to Ryan waiting at the desk and told him quietly. “Your usual desk is taken so please just sit next to Jean for today ok?”

With that Ryan lifted his head and nodded happily. He went, sat down and looked around at everyone who was now working on their test as the room just went silent. He looked down at his teacher who gave him a thumb up and smiled.

“The teacher just did something nice for me, the world must be ending,” Ryan thought in his mind. “It doesn’t matter though, once he grades my test I’m done for.”

Jean slips a note over into Ryan’s hand which was just dangling over the side of his chair. He looks over at her in surprise while lifting the note onto his desk.

He reads it silently in his mind. “The teacher thought you may need some extra help on this test since you were up for most of the night and I told him you probably didn’t get a chance to study then. This is a one time thing so don’t expect future favors from him. After this one you are on your own. Just quick glance over to my test every now and then for answers to questions you may be having trouble with.”

Instantly Ryan let out a relieving sigh as if all the weight on his shoulders had just been taken off. He glanced down at the teacher who had a calm smiling expression still about him, then over to Jean who winked and started working on her test.

Time passed by slowly. Students began handing in their test papers and walking out the classroom doors after finishing. After an hour Jean had finished her test. Ryan on the other hand was still scratching his head and moving his pencil menacingly. Jean noticed and slowly started moving her test papers around helping Ryan finish. A couple minutes later they both stood up and went to hand in their test papers.

“Thanks Mr. Samson, words can not express how grateful I am right now but that’s the most I can do.”

“Not a problem Ryan, let’s just keep this a secret between us ok? By the way, in return you could try getting more sleep and paying attention in class ok?”

“Yes sir,” replied Ryan as he bowed and exited the room with Jean.

“Wow you’re a hero! I can’t believe you saved someone last night. I wish I was there, I could have helped.”

“If its any consolation you just became my hero. See the thing is… There was nothing I could do for her. All I could do was call 911. That’s it,” said Ryan unpersuasively. “Wait… that’s not all I can do for her… I gotta go Jean, Thanks for helping me today. I owe ya one! See ya later!”

Ryan quickly took off down the hallways and out of the school.

“Geez… He could of at least asked me if I wanted to go,” said Jean to herself as she sighed and became a bit depressed. “I got feelings too ya know… Meh.”

She walks off down the other way through the hall towards the other exit while Ryan already outside boards a bus and exits at the station closest to the hospital. Upon exiting the bus he notices Mr. Porter’s police car outside the hospital again. He runs up to it to find him still in the car.

“Porters?”

“Ah… Ryan, just who I was looking for. Welp, it seems that the raft left us at a dead end. There were no clues on the raft. All we could do was come to the conclusion that she was escaping from somewhere. The funny thing is there are no islands around here. With that, this case is currently unsolvable. Furthermore I tried questioning her today but she just won’t talk to anyone.”

“I see. Thanks for trying Porter. If I find out anything I’ll come to you right away,” said Ryan somewhat lying.

Ryan took off into the hospital after waving goodbye to Mr. Porter. The nurse was there again as usual. She took him up to the room where a doctor was waiting while writing some things down on his clipboard.

“Who’s he,” he said quietly to the nurse.

“He’s a specialist, he treats patients psychiatrically.”

“Ahh… You must be Ryan. Pleased to meet you.”

He extends his hand in a formal manor as Ryan greets it with his.

“Yes, I’m Ryan what’s going on?”

“Well, I guess I’ll get straight to the point here. The woman you recovered yesterday seems to be suffering from a very severe disorder called, psychosis. All though, I’ve never seen it this severe in all my years of work. She has a lot of trouble distinguishing reality from hallucinations and delusions. I can only come to the conclusion that she has had a devastating past. She won’t talk to me or open up to anyone else, so I had a brief meeting with all the other doctors. The nurse was there to and she told us about you and what had happened between you and her thus far. We all decided that since we don’t know who her family is or any relating information, we will have to leave her in your care.”

Psychosis is a generic psychiatric term for a mental state in which thought and perception are severely impaired. Persons experiencing a psychotic episode may experience hallucinations, hold delusional beliefs (e.g., grandiose or paranoid delusions), demonstrate personality changes and exhibit disorganized thinking. This is often accompanied by lack of insight into the unusual or bizarre nature of such behavior, difficulties with social interaction and impairments in carrying out the activities of daily living. A psychotic episode is often described as involving a "loss of contact with reality".

“In my care,” uttered Ryan who was completely shocked and surprised.

“It’s the only thing we can do for her. She doesn’t talk or move when anyone else is around. Please… just visit her today and think about it before you make your final decision. I know this is a weird thing to ask of someone who doesn’t even know her. But even if there is a slight chance to save this woman from a total social functions shutdown, I think we should do anything we can to see that it happens. Just visit her and think about it that’s all I’m asking.”

The doctor opens the door and makes a pathway for Ryan. There was the woman with long silky purple hair lying motionless on the bed. Ryan hesitantly takes his first step, stops, and then begins moving towards her bed.

“Again, Again I’m walking up to this woman… A person I don’t even know. Just look at her,” Ryan gazes at her completely mystified. “She’s so innocent and helpless. What kind of guy in his right mind wouldn’t want to help her recover?”

He stops beside her bed while still thinking, “She’s very beautiful it’s a shame she had to go through all of this. I wish… I wish…”

Out of no where, Ryan’s hand is gripped by her searching hand as she stares at the ceiling. Ryan no longer able to hold it in falls down beside her bed. Tears start forming and falling down his cheek as he stares at her in awe while holding her hand. His eyes started shaking as he was searching for the right words to say.

“I wish I could give you a second chance… A second chance at life… No… I want to… Not just for me… for you!”

“He pulls her up into sitting position and hugs her tightly. She makes no movements or shows signs of being scared but her eyes start twitching and wobbling around trying desperately to comprehend the situation. Shortly after tears begin forming from her eyes as well.”

“From this day forward, I’m here for you…”
