Chapter 2 “A Promise”

“Is he the one?”

“Yes I’m positive he’s the one that called it in and found her.”

Ryan was still half asleep as he lifted into sitting position. His vision recovers from being blurry while he looks around. He looks down at his watch.

“Oh crap, I’m gonna be late for school.”

“I’m afraid you’re not going anywhere until you answer a few questions,” interrupted the officer.

Ryan quickly glances to the left. A policeman and the nurse were standing in front of the doorway. The first thought that came into Ryan’s head was that he was going to be blamed for anything that could have happened to her before finding her. He stood up quickly with the realism that he might be in serious trouble.

“I didn’t do anything to her, I assure you! I was walking home from work with one of my friends. We parted ways but on my way to my house I found her lying on the beach just like she is now. I swear it officer,” said Ryan who was desperately trying to defend himself from any oncoming questions of blame.

“Slow down son, I’m not saying you’re the one to blame I just need to know if you happen to know anything about the girl,” replied the officer in a calm manor. “We need to figure out who she was with before you found her and any other information that could give us any clues. All so, we need to know if you know anything about her family.”

“I’m sorry; I don’t know anything about her, how she got there, or who she was with before I found her. All I know is that there was a raft next to the location where I found her.”

“A raft you say,” exclaimed the officer with a curious face. “Can you give me the name of the beach it was on? I’d like to go investigate this further.”

“Sure, it was on crystal beach, down route 55. It was a log raft; it should be easily noticeable during the day.”

“Thank you sir,” said the officer as he bowed politely and exited the room.

Ryan looks over at the nurse now who had a look that didn’t seem to be holding good news.

“Well… Is she ok,” said Ryan as she stared at him.

She shook her head as Ryan’s eyes widened. He looks down at the floor in despair. He catches himself from falling by holding his upper body up, pushing on his knees.

“She’s ok physically, her body only has minor cuts and bruises. The problem is mentally. She seems to have lost all her memory. She wont speak to anyone or even move. It’s as if she’s dead on the inside.”

Ryan regained himself after hearing that. He looked back up into her eyes.

“Can I see her,” asked Ryan hesitantly.

“Yes, this way please.”

Ryan followed the nurse out of the room and down the hall. They rounded a few corners and boarded an elevator. The nurse presses the button for the third floor and the elevator takes off. It dings shortly after as they step out into a somewhat darker hallway. They rounded 2 more corners and stopped at a door. The nurse opens it and stands in front of the door letting Ryan walk through. Upon entering he notices the pretty silky purple hair that he saw when he first found her. It was dangling on the side of the bed. He continues up to her bed slowly.

Just as Ryan took his last step to her bed, she shifted her head to look at him. Ryan was so startled by this that he almost fell backwards. After that she ceased from moving again. Ryan crouched down beside her bed.

“What am I doing? It’s not like I even know this woman,” said Ryan in his mind as he moved his eyes, now looking straight into hers. “She looks absolutely terrified. I wonder…”

Slowly, Ryan moves his left hand up to her hand and grabs it. She starts breathing heavily as if getting more scared by the second.

“It’s ok, I’m not going to hurt you. I just want you to know that I’m here for you. You need to rest and get better ok?”

With that Ryan released her hand and turned to walk away only to be stopped in his tracks by her hand closing down on his. He turned around again looking down into her trembling eyes.

“I’m going to come back ok? I have to go to school… I will come back, I promise!”

He exit’s the room quickly after his last comment and closes the door behind him breathing somewhat heavily. He lifts his head to see the nurse leaning against the wall, clipboard in hand.

“For her sake I hope you keep that promise. There is a car outside that is waiting to take you to your school. Consider it a reward for your act of kindness.”

“Thank you,” replied Ryan as he walked off.

Upon exiting the hospital Ryan notices the cop that he was talking to earlier. He walks up to it and enters it. It takes off down out of the hospital driveway towards his school.
