Long Miles
Ten days passed. Everything was calm in the skies. Jack proved to
be an excellent pilot.
“We're going really fast,” Anna Jane commented on day one.
“Yep,” Jack said. “This is the fastest ship in the world.”
“Wow,” she said. The small man chuckled.
“I've never been on a plan before,” the little girl said.
“Really?” Jack asked. Anna Jane nodded.
“I see,” he said. “Alright. Well, you're in a treat.” The girl
couldn't help but smile.
“Yay!” she cheered. The forest king smiled to himself as he shook
his head.
And it was all good.
By day eleven, that peace was rocked. Around noon, Anna Jane looked
out the window. Three black planes flew towards the air ship. They
didn't seem to fly by. These planes wouldn't let up.
“Hm,” Anna Jane said. “Jack.”
“Yes?” the forest king asked.
“Why are there black planes following us?” she asked. Jack
froze.
“What did you say?” he asked.
“Look,” Anna Jane said. She pointed out the window. Against his
better judgement, Jack looked out the window. His face turned
grim.
“Aw shit,” he muttered.
“What?” Anna Jane asked. Jack cranked up the speed and sped up the
ship. Anna Jane hit the ground hard.
“Whoa!” she screamed. Jack gritted his teeth.
“Not today, man!” he growled. “Not today! Not today!”
“What's going on?” Anna Jane asked.
“Pirates!” the leader said. “Air pirates.”
“Huh?” the girl asked.
“We can't let them get us!” the forest king said. “You better hand
on tight” Anna Jane hung onto the co-pilot seat, shutting her
eyes.
“Hang on!” the forest kin shouted. He started to make the air ship
climb.
The three small black planes chased the ship, gaining speed. Anna
Jane looked out the window.
“They're gaining on us!” she shouted.
“I know!” Jack shouted.
Bang!
“What was that?!” Anna Jane shouted.
“They are shooting at us!” Jack shouted.
“But why?!” the girl shouted.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Anna Jane screamed and ducked. The rest of her group ducked and
hid.
“What's going on?!” Vivian cried. George howled and whimpered.
“Mayday! Mayday!” Jack screamed over the intercom. He still kept
flying. Everyone had their eyes shut. Jack prayed under his
breath.
Crash!
That was three days ago.

-Now-
Jack looked at the wrecked ship.
“God damn it,” he said. “I took so much care of it for years too.”
Vivian stood around, frowning.
“Now what?” she asked. Anna Jane looked out at the vast desert as
she dusted herself off. She shrugged.
“Start walking, I guess,” she said.
“Where?” Logan asked.
“Out there,” the girl said, pointing to the desert. Vivian
frowned.
“Are you serious?” she asked. Anna Jane shrugged.
“What else can we do?” she asked. “We're stuck out here. Might as
well keep going.” Anna Jane started walking.
“AJ!” Logan yelled. He ran to catch up with her. Vivian threw back
her head and sighed.
“Why me?!” she wailed. She and George ran to keep up. Jack worked
on the air ship. Alone again, he thought. Time to fix this
baby—again.
