The next day, with semi-full stomachs, the two of them were on the road again by sunrise. For the night before it had been Jason's suggestion to leave early with hope they might make it before the planes left. They paled around like long time best buds, talking about anything boyish that came to mind. Jason was growing to like Shane a lot, not sexually of course, but they shared a lot of the same interests and had a lot in common, and he was funny. By noon his Shane's flirting turned into a laughing matter every time it came up and neither felt uncomfortable with the other.

“So…” Shane began after there was a long pause between them. “I hear the ocean over there, how's `bout we go skinny dipping?” He suggested humorously.

“Yeah, tell me when you become a hot girl, then we'll talk,” Jason replied.

“Would you date me if I got a sex change?” Shane asked. He was walking backwards in front of Jason as he spoke. Jason pretended to think about it for a moment, but quickly blurted out an answer.

“Uhm… no.” He said.

“Good, because I'm not that desperate. How about you, you got a girlfriend?” Shane asked. Jason was hesitant to answer, he wasn't really sure if he had or not. Officially he didn't, but there was a rumor that he and his best friend were going out.

“Not really,” He replied.

“Not really?” Shane gave him an odd look. “How does that work? You can't `not really' have a girlfriend,” He said.

“Well then no… I mean, I don't know…” His voice trailed off. Shane stopped and pulled Jason to a stop as well.
“You don't know?” He asked. Jason was becoming annoyed, he didn't really want to talk about it, he barely knew anything about it.

“Well there's a girl that I know, and we hang out a lot, we hold hands and hug, but there was never any talk between us about dating. Some people think we are, I don't know what she thinks about it… and I just--- don't know,” He replied. Teresa was always jumping on him and messing around with him as if they were boyfriend and girlfriend, but maybe that was just the way she treated friends. Then again she didn't treat Raj or Clark that way, but Clark was gay, and Raj was just… Raj.

“Well why don't you ask her out if you like her, and see what she says?” Shane suggested.

“That's the problem, I don't really like her that way,” He stuttered. Shane shut up about it after that, he didn't really know much about dating friends and stuff. Everyone he'd ever gone out with started as a stranger, which was what made him feel like such a loser, somehow. He liked girls, some of them anyway, they're nice, friendly and cute as far as personality. One of his best friends was Carly Parker, and his sister, Natalie, but despite all that he didn't know much about dating them.

“Any crushes?” Shane wanted to change the subject but he didn't want to take it too far, besides, every guy had crushes whether they liked to admit it or not. Jason sighed and began to think, he had plenty of girls that he'd love to date, but no guts to ask.

“Melissa Rowe, she was in my ninth period class senior year, really sweet, and Katie Miles, she's one of those quiet hot blonds, you know?” Jason replied. He had so many more, but those were just his top two, he loved girls, but he was afraid of them, thinking every pretty girl in existence looked at him and saw a loser. “How `bout you? Crushin' on anyone?” Jason asked. “Besides me,” He added suddenly remembering that Shane was gay, when he'd first asked he was thinking girls. How he gues
sed that this guy was gay he couldn't get anymore, without him telling you, it seemed like there was no way you could tell.

“Well I've been in love with Tony Reynolds since the fifth grade, which is when I found out I was gay, and he knows it. He's my best friend though; he's back at the base probably worrying about his girlfriend. And then there's Derek Satchel, the motorcycle man. They say he's bi but either way I'd never have a chance with him,” Shane explained. Derek Satchel was really his celebrity heartthrob more than a crush. He'd have done anything just to meet the guy let alone date him, or kiss him, or something. If he had an improbable fantasy locked in his mind it was defiantly anything positive to do with Derek. He came by the high school now and then, the girls would crowd him, but Shane would just sit back and watch him show off his hot wheels, and body. It was like perfection if there was any such thing.

He began to wonder if Derek was even still around, he hadn't been home in five years, maybe the motorcycle man had moved on. He couldn't have though; everyone in Avon knew and loved him, every teenager that was. He was an idol to all the guys and a hunk for all the girls, he would have been an ass to just leave. He was bigger than the local bands, the whole school waited for him to show up in the parking lot at 3:30 and get chased away by the cops fifteen minutes later. He always got away too, and he always waved.

“Shane?” Jason waved a hand in front of Shane's eyes. He's been staring off into the distance saying nothing with a dazed expression for five minutes, it was beginning to creep Jason out.
“Oh sorry, I was thinking,” Shane said blushing and looking down at his feet.

“Are we lost?” Clark suddenly chimed out breaking the long silence between the three of them.

“We're not lost,” Raj assured taking random steps in any direction and having no idea where he was going. Of course he was lost, all three of them were. They'd been out there for almost a full twenty-four hours and were running low on food, but the last thing he wanted was any sort of panic, so he couldn't let them know that.

Teresa was leaning on Clark to keep balance because her legs weren't working. Clark didn't mind so much either, in fact he was happy to help, happy to look strong and decent enough to help someone walk. He loved dignity, and would do anything to get more of it; the only problem was he didn't have much as it was. Teresa gripped his shirt and yawned, they'd slept the night but woke up at sunrise. Raj was a morning person, and he'd lost them actually the night before and wanted to get straight back to finding the base. He was no longer concerned about Jason; he just wanted to get back, as did the other too.

“Are you sure you know where you're going?” Clark yelled up to Raj. Raj stomped angrily and turned to him.

“No! How the hell could I know? I've never been in these woods before; I'm lost, all right? Could you shut up so maybe I can changed that?” He growled becoming aggravated by himself and choosing to take it out on Clark. Clark stuck his tongue out and made a face, putting an arm around Teresa and rubbing her shoulder.

“This was a bad idea,” He sighed and stepped away from her, sub-consciously forcing her to walk on her own. All thought she'd liked hanging on him for more than just balance, Teresa was somewhat glad to be on her own again. She started to wonder to the side but kept the others insight, just checking to see if she could hear anything, still thinking partly about Jason.

“What was that?” Clark froze in his place, he could've sworn he heard a loud yell coming from somewhere in the woods.

“What was what?” Raj stomped, assuming Clark was hearing things, he hadn't heard a thing.

“Get it!” Jason demanded as Shane had cornered a small rabbit in a hollow tree. He playfully came running over with his limp to help out.
“I don't wanna shoot it, you shoot it,” Shane said shoving the gun at him. Jason gasped and looked at the innocent little rabbit curled up in the corner and scared to death. Both of them could have used something to eat, but what kind of person wants to kill something like that.

“No, I shot the raccoon,” Jason exclaimed and pushed the gun away from him. “You do this one, it's even,” He said.

“Yeah, exactly, which means you got the blood on your hands already…”

“Shane!” Jason pointed. The rabbit had left the hollow tree and was on it's way threw the woods. As soon as Shane saw it he took the gun and ran after the animal to try and catch it again. Unfortunately he ran straight into a mud puddle, caught his foot in the deep mush and fell face first into the muck. He lay there for a moment, unsure of what had happened until he realized he couldn't breath and lifted his head. He couldn't see with the mud in his eyes, but hearing the sound of a gun loading near his face he got a quick motivation to wipe it away. Sure enough, the cold opening of a long unforgiving tube was pointed right between his eyes. He looked up at two unfamiliar faces, two obviously German soldiers.

“Eheh, hi?” He smiled his best, but all he could think was that he was dead, if not dead a prisoner of war, meaning he was as good as dead. One of them said something to the other in German and they both laughed aloud, apparently they were laughing at him. Shane squinted at them; he saw nothing funny in this situation. Not a moment later a gun went off and out of nowhere a bullet struck the taller soldier in the back. Shane gasped as another shot went off not long after the last, this one hit the other one in the shoulder and he stumbled over before he could reach his gun. A third shot went off which struck him straight in the head, both of them were dead.

“Damn I'm good!” Clark complimented himself blowing the non-existent smoke from the top of his gun. After they were on their backs Raj felt it was safe to come out and trudged over to the two dead bodies and the one stunned, dirty American.

“Congratulations Clark, you are now officially a murderer,” He sighed. Raj didn't like Clark's psychotic bipolar personality; then again there wasn't much he did like about Clark.

“It's not murder, that's what we're here for, kill the bad guys,” Clark replied. He stepped out from behind a tree and approached the two of them casually.

“Nice shot,” Teresa said nudging one of the bodies with her foot. Raj helped the muddy kid to his feet cautiously; unsure of whether or not he could be trusted. Shane rubbed his sleeve over his eye and looked closely at the people who had apparently saved him. Oddly enough all he could wonder was where Jason was.

“Who're you,” Clark stuck the gun in Shane's face just for the sake of looking threatening. Shane wrinkled his nose at the opening and looked down the tube, so much for saving his life. Teresa rolled her eyes and was about to push the gun away when the four of them heard a familiar voice.

“Clark!”

They all at once turned and looked to see Jason running toward them, or at least moving as quickly as he could with the limp. Teresa's jaw dropped and she went running for him without a single word. Raj smiled and followed her at a slower pace, Shane and Clark just stood there, looking at each other, Clark refusing to take the gun off of Shane, and Shane squinting at him not very amused.

“Oh my god I thought you'd be dead it's so great to see you,” Teresa hugged him in greeting as he smiled and hugged her back. “You were gone so long so Clark, Raj, and I went looking for you!” She was so grateful just to see that he was okay, that he was alive.

“I thought I'd end up dead too… If it weren't for Shane… where's Shane?” Jason looked around, all he'd seen were the soldiers coming off of the path and then Shane just disappeared into nowhere. He'd heard gunshots, what if he'd been shot?

“Black hair, coated in muck? He's over there, Clark thinks he's going to destroy us all…” Raj pointed. Shane and Clark were talking, the gun still straight up in Shane's face. Jason sighed moved around Teresa to go call Clark off his unnecessary guard duty.

“So, name?” Clark asked putting a hand on his hip and turning the gun sideways girlishly. Funny he should show off his gayness so soon, and Shane noticed it.

“Shane Fulmer, no accent, no freakish facial hair cut, I'm American hon, get the gun off me,” Shane growled. Clark smirked, so what if he was American, so what if he was fighting against the Germans as well, Clark loved to mess with people.

“How do I know you're not with `em anyway, after all you were having a lovely laughable conversation with two of them over here,” Clark stated, recalling the laughs he'd heard from the soldiers just before he'd picked them off. Shane scowled at him, he was covered in mud, wet, hungry, and defiantly not in a very good mood.

“Clark, put it down, he's fine,” Jason ordered limping over with Clark and Teresa following him and whispering to one another. Clark frowned and let the gun fall to his side, his fun was over.

“Friend of yours?” He asked having a seat on a nearby log and taking a drink of water from his canteen. Teresa sat next to him after she'd arrived and took off her pack, unzipping the largest zipper.

“I ran into `im out here, yeah,” Jason said as he helped Shane pull out of the mud which his feet had sunken into while he was forced to stand still. After he was free the first thing Shane did was remove his muddy jacket and started whipping the muck off of his arms and chest. Clark was watching him carefully, at first just for the sake of being suspicious, but later he was just staring at the body form. A smile came over him and he decided, as Shane reluctantly put the jacket back on, that he would try to get along with Jason's new friend.

“You two hungry?” Teresa pulled a bag with three pieces of raw chicken out of her pack and held them up. Jason sat down next to her just to rest and nodded.

“I think we're both pretty starved,” He nodded hand motioning Shane and Raj to come have a seat as well. Shane purposely made sure he beat Raj and sat down next to Jason, Raj taking his place on the other side by Clark. Teresa handed both Shane and Jason a chicken breast, but Shane didn't take it.

“No, you go ahead Jase. Do you guys know how far it is to camp?” Shane asked eagerly. He was still anxious to get back before the planes left.

“No, not really,” Raj replied in guilt. “Sorry to break it to you guys, but I think we're pretty lost too,” he looked around. Normally his navigation skills were brilliant, but he just couldn't find anything familiar that would tell him which way to go.

“See, I told you we were lost,” Clark mumbled, reaching for a piece of chicken himself. Teresa slapped his hands away and zipped up the bag, saying nothing. Clark scoffed at her and his jaw dropped, stunned for whatever reason that she would deny him like that.

“These two probably haven't eaten in days, we had a bite this morning, we have to save it. Please, Shane, if you don't eat anything you're not going to have much energy,” Teresa prodded offering the food to Shane once more. Shane nodded back and forth and stood up in disappointment, no way he'd make it back before the planes left, no way. He trudged away to be alone ignoring his roaring stomach. He shouldn't have been surprised, he was sure he wasn't going to make it in the first place. He leaned against a tree and heard footsteps approaching behind him.

“I'm really sorry,” Jason said stopping when he was about three feet from Shane. “I know you're anxious to get back, but now that we all sort-of know each other maybe we could have a decent time out here. I mean before the rabbit got away we were pretty chummy, right?” He shrugged and wedged his foot into the ground shyly. By this time, being the kind of person he was, he really cared about Shane. That was his thing, how he worked, he cared about people. He was so much more then a fair weather friend, he would be the person that would be more than willing to help any of his friends through the hardest parts of their lives. Shane saw that in him, though he didn't really center his crush on that, it made him feel even more attracted.

“'Course,” Shane replied. “I dunno, I don't want to make an issue out of it, I'm just bummed,” He sighed and crossed his legs, throwing his head back against the tree. Clark was watching, that pose made the older guy look so vulnerable and sexy. He had an urge in between his legs to get up and pin that boy against that tree and just do as he pleased until he felt finished. He let out a small moan-like sound just thinking about it, which Raj heard.

“What was that?” Raj raised an eyebrow and scooted away from him, a little startled by the moan. Clark turned to him, unsure of what he was talking about.

“Did you just moan, like a sex moan?” Teresa confronted. Clark looked back at her with his jaw hanging open, trying to think up a way to justify himself.

“I was just…” He looked at Shane again and his eyes became relocked as he brought a hand to his mouth, staring. Teresa's mouth fell open and she looked at the scene where Shane and Jason were talking and then back at Clark.

“You pervert,” She tried not to laugh at him but couldn't hold back a short chuckle. Clark however didn't see anything wrong with the things that went on in his mind.

“Oh come on, you're a girl, he's attractive,” He protested, his eyes rarely leaving Shane's form, focusing on the spot in between his jacket where his chest was visible. Teresa kept her eyes on the ground, still trying not to laugh at him.

“Jason is attractive,” She stated harshly. Raj's breath hitched and he turned away, as always, no one noticed. “And I don't look at him like that, and moan like you're being sucked off,” She said. She only spoke that way about Jason when he wasn't around, only Clark and Raj knew how much she wanted him, Jason was clueless. Clark usually took it as a joke, but Raj knew how serious she was, and when she spoke of him in such away, his heart bled. Teresa may have been open to telling people, but Raj was the only one who knew how much he loved that girl.

“So? Why don't you ask him out, he's single, I can't see him saying no,” Clark suggested for the millionth time. Raj's eyes widened in hope that once again Teresa would turn down the offer as she had every other time.

“Why don't you ask Shane,” Teresa challenged, just for the sake of changing the subject. Clark squinted and leaned forward so that he was in her face.

“Maybe I will,” He huffed. Teresa chuckled incredulously and pressed her hand on his face, pushing him away.

“I would love to see that, Clark asking out another straight boy and getting his gay ass kicked. This time I'll just sit and watch,” She threatened.

“Okay,” Clark said shooting to his feet. “I will, right now,” He assured. Teresa frowned up at him and grabbed his pant leg.

“Sit your ass down, it's a bad idea,” Raj cut in calmly. Clark didn't listen though, he just jerked away from Teresa and started over toward Shane. He paused for a moment when he was halfway there; maybe it wasn't such a good idea. Shane was rather big, obviously older, and who knew how he felt about sexual orientations such as his. But he'd made it clear to Teresa that he was going to, and couldn't back down now, after all, if anything started it would end up being four against one, provided that his friends took his side.

“He's cute, he's a little weird though, maybe I'll ask him out,” Shane murmured, looking at Clark as he and Teresa seemed to be arguing over unknown subjects. Jason grabbed his sleeve and tugged on it, his way of turning Shane's eyes off his friend.

“No, you can't ask him out, I mean come on, you can't just ask out the first gay you come across, that's desperate,” Jason made up his own excuses, when really he didn't want Clark dating. Clark was very protective and possessive, what he thinks is his and what he wants would always be his. And if he ever really fell in love with someone, it could be bad news if that person ever tried to leave him. There could even have been a few deaths, Clark wasn't a lover, he wasn't meant to have a boyfriend, ever.

“Not if he's you actually like him it's not. Since when is it up to you buddy boy. You may be a cutie but that doesn't mean I'm gonna live up to all your wishes, unless of course we're dating now,” Shane smirked and crossed his arms. Jason suddenly didn't care, it just clicked off in his head and he didn't give a damn if Shane went out with the psychotic boy.

“All right, whatever, do what you want,” He shrugged, rolled his eyes and started stomping back to the log that the five of them had turned into a couch.

Jason stomped passed Clark and didn't even glance at him as Clark watched him go by, wondering what he was so huffy about. He shrugged and continued over to Shane, who smelled like dry mud. He wrinkled his nose and stepped back a bit, waving a hand in front of his face.

“You need to take that jacket off boy, it stinks,” He complained. At first he didn't even realize what he was saying, just exactly how it came into his mind. Shane frowned and tilted his head; maybe he was better off waiting until he didn't smell so bad to ask anyone out.

“Sorry,” He put on a crooked smile and without thinking he removed the jacket from his body. “I guess I shouldn't wear it anymore,” He slung it over his shoulder, trying to hide an embarrassed blush.

“Yeah,” Clark agreed, still victim to the unappealing scent. Maybe when Shane was a little less dirty, after he'd had a shower back at the base or something. He didn't want to date a ball of mud as Shane seemed to be at the current time when seen up close.

“So what's up?” Shane asked, referring to why Clark came over to him.

“Um, nothing, I thought I'd come check out what you guys were talking about, but I guess you're not talking anymore,” Clark was having trouble not looking at this guy even with the smell. The first thing that came to mind was that he must have been some kind of super model. The smooth looking, flawless skin, brown eyes, he was just what Clark had always wanted in a guy, minus the smell.

“By the way, I'm sorry about earlier, I'm a little… well you know,” He shrugged. Shane nodded in acceptance and started back toward the others, rather wanting to talk with Jason a little more.

“Well as long as we're stuck out here we might as well get along,” Shane replied as he walked away. Clark frowned at the fact that Shane was interested in speaking with the others. He sort-of wanted the two of them to be alone there together, to get to know each other a bit. Shit did he like this guy, Clark never felt a need to really talk to anyone, he was just a jerk until then. And until then, that's the way he liked it, but now he liked something else.
