By nightfall the two German soldier's bodies were burned, as Clark had made the suggestions. Fortunately, none of the five were there to see the remains, they were on their way back in the direction that they decided was most likely the right way. Tired, hungry, smelly, and low on food the five desperately forged on half way through the night until not one of them could see a thing.

“Oh goody, look, I can't see my hand,” Clark complained waving his hand in front of his face. The others had been feeling their way around, having noticed that they couldn't see long before. Jason had really been the one to push them along after the sun went down, even though the moon was new. Shane was first to protest against it too, Jason had been in pain ever since they'd started up again, and he was worried. But Jason insisted they keep going, even though he was the main excuse everyone made to stop and rest for the night.

His leg was hurting, stinging due to the constant leg movement; it seemed to want to rest too. But he wanted to get back, he didn't want to be the reason that they had to walk spend another day out here. As long as the others weren't completely against the idea he wasn't about to complain. In fact he eventually got used to walking with the pain, it was better than having a headache.

Teresa was falling asleep on her feet, Clark would have been the first to give her support, but he was focused on Shane, trying to start a conversation. Jason would have been next, but he was limp, so Raj saw his little chance to please her and moved up next to her. She yawned and took the invitation gladly, leaning her head against his shoulder and putting an arm around him. He put a friendly arm around her too, but dared not go any further.
Jason started sliding his feet and using his arms to lift his hurt leg over logs and roots in front of him. There was no path, but he was somewhat good with staying clear of branchy areas and places with small trees for his and his friends' sake. He was far up front; the others took a steady pace and just listened for his footsteps. He was thinking, and he much liked to be alone, or as alone as possible when he was thinking. Suddenly, after his foot hit the ground his leg knee cringed once again and he fell forward. Clark was just about to open his mouth to Shane, but Shane had heard the yelp and the thud and rushed up to Jason before Clark could get a word out. The others followed, Teresa now wide-awake.

“Are you…” Shane began; he bent over to help Jason. But Jason let out a shriek and flipped himself over, scrambling away from the last spot he'd been in.

“What happened?” Shane asked, searching for his new location.
“Something bit me,” Jason squealed. “Right in my elbow,” He tried to hold back a cry of pain, but it had hurt greatly. He put his hand against the spot it had hit him and felt the blood soaking through.

“Oh Jason,” Teresa put an arm behind his back and helped him sit up a little more. “You're just getting beat up the last few days aren't you?” She held him sympathetically. Clark crossed his arms and rolled his eyes, wishing they could just get going again. Shane took out his lighter and lit up a flame so they could see what they were doing a little better.

“We can't do this in the dark, we're gonna have to stop for the night,” Teresa said. “Someone get some wood or something so we can make a fire,” She demanded. Raj was first to acknowledge it and bent over immediately to pick up a few sticks at his feet.

“What if it's a poisonous snake or something, they got medicine for that back at the base, he won't last the night out here if it was a Coral Snake, or something,” Clark implied. Most of them didn't really know of the venomous animals in Germany, nor if there were any that weren't venomous.

“We can't make him keep going, he's losing blood, whatever bit him, bit hard,” Teresa said. She pulled a cloth bag out of her pack to use it as a casting, one that her mother had given her before she'd left.

“It's all right, I don't need my arms to walk, I can keep going, really,” Jason pleaded. Shane really did nothing but think about the situation and listen to the other's observations, stringing them all together he came up with an idea.

“All right, I got an idea. You four sit tight and make sure he's all right, make a fire and everything, and I'll run ahead maybe a mile to see if we're anywhere near the base. If we're less than a mile away I'll come back and get you guys, if not we'll have to spend the night,” Shane suggested, making his tone conclusive. He stood up and handed the lighter to Clark who took it in regret.

“Dude, this is so gay,” He said lighting up the flame again as it had went out when Shane handed it off.

“You're gay,” Raj said humorously as he picked up a stick next to Clark's foot.

“You know what I mean,” Clark growled at him as he trudged over by Jason so they had the light.

“Are you gonna be all right man?” Shane asked taking a seat next to Jason as Teresa worked with the wound. He pushed Jason's hair out of his eyes with his index finger and smirked, the boy's eyes were defiantly his best feature. Jason chuckled a bit and blushed, turning his head away in slight embarrassment.

“Shane,” He began, swallowing. “Don't worry about me,” He kept himself from looking at Shane, he really didn't like that grin that he got every once and a while. He couldn't help but wonder what kind of things Shane was thinking when that look came over him.

“Good, just don't die, okay?” He winked and stood up, heading in the direction they had been going before Jason had fallen.

“What was that all about?” Teresa asked, still unaware of Shane's sexual preference. Jason simply shook his head in an attempt not to smile, and confused as to why any part of him wanted to smile.

“Nothing,” He whispered, looking down at his feet, seemingly studying the toes of his boots. Clark glared at him, he for one had an idea of what was going on, and it could've meant both good and bad things for him.
“There goes big shot,” Raj mumbled as he cleared a spot to put the sticks and start the fire. Jason sneered up at him.

“What are you talking about?” He asked defensively with a growl in his tone. Raj shrugged and dropped the sticks at his feet.

“You can just tell he's high on himself, he won't even talk to anyone but you most of the time. Now he's off to be a hero,” He murmured, knowing he'd just started an argument.

“He's my friend. Besides, maybe he's just quiet. You should mind your own business,” Jason scowled at him and then looked off in the direction Shane had gone with anger in his eyes. Clark sat silently with the little light, just listening to the conversation and mostly what Jason said.

“You just met him two days ago and already you're siding with him?” Raj snatched the lighter out of Clark's hand and bent down to start up the fire. “I mean come on, we've all seen that guy around, haven't you guys? He hangs out with that Tony guy, you know, the one that likes to push you around because you wear glasses,” He explained.

“His name's Tony?” Clark chimed in suddenly, but no one really listened to him.

“I've never seen them together, I've never seen him at all” Teresa said. “And I think you're being a little judgmental, after all, even if those two are friends, it doesn't mean he's the same way,” She said, leaning against a tree.

“Well whatever. But if I were you guys, I'd ditch him as soon as we get back to the base,” Raj continued to light the leaves in various places in hope that it might stay lit. He didn't want to argue with Teresa, or give her a bad impression, but he had problems with holding back his opinion.

“Puh. You would,” Jason mumbled under his breath. As far as he was concerned Shane had been more friend to him than Raj or Clark ever had in just those two days. And he was pretty sure by now that it was more than just trying to win him as a boyfriend. Teresa was still on top, as he felt she always would be, but Raj and Clark were never very helpful or friendly to him in the first place.

“All right guys let's not get all pissy with each other, there's only one fire,” Clark suggested, jamming his hands into his pocket. Teresa sighed and poked at the fire with a stick in boredom.

“He's right,” She agreed. All they could do was wait; it was better if they didn't add to the misery by arguing over dumb things.

Shane was a little cold by that time, cold lonely, and undeniably a little scared. But he wasn't even sure which way was back, couldn't see the fire or anything, so he just kept going straight. Hopefully he'd be able to find his way back to them whether he came upon the base or not.

After a lot of walking Shane came to a shallow but steep slope, he plodded down the side; unable to see exactly how it was shaped. But he could see the starlight reflecting off the rainwater that was sitting in the cupped leaves at the bottom. It seemed to be flat ground from the on, and he suddenly remembered the hill from the march out. If he was thinking correctly, it hadn't been too far into the march, which meant the base could have easily been near by. In excitement he quickened his pace a bit, not quite running because he couldn't see what was in front of him. He just rushed through the woods; hopping over logs and ducking under branches as I something were chasing him, when finally he stumbled out of the woods.

He found himself running down hill, unable to stop right away he tripped and began rolling, but not before he saw the series of small tents, he'd made it. He stumbled and tripped a few more times as he tried to regain his footing, but ended up slamming into a man at the bottom of the hill.

“Oof,” Mark let out a grunt as some large object, most likely a man crashed against his back sending him forward into the dirt. Shane lay next to him coughing and gagging due to being out of breath. Not a moment later he found a light shining in his eyes, directed at him from the ground.

“Shane,” Mark huffed. “You son of a bitch,” He stretched out and let the flashlight fall from his hand. He'd been scared out of his wits, and for a moment just wanted to lie there. Shane laughed and squirmed over to him, grabbing the flashlight.

“Hell, am I glad to see you,” He said. “I'm taking this,” He said shortly and climbed back to his feet and headed back toward the woods. Mark scrambled up and ran after him, pulling him back by his shoulder.

“What are you doing man, Tony's been worried sick about you, come on,” He said tugging Shane's arm back toward the base. Shane jerked free and backed away from him.

“My future husband's still back in the woods, along with a few other people. I said I'd go back if I found the base, I didn't lie. You're welcome to come along,” He stated. He didn't wait for an answer; he just turned and headed back toward the hill he'd fallen down. Mark paused for a moment, but not long after Shane was halfway up the steep hill he went rushing after him. He was supposed to be on guard duty that night, but he was bored, and figured, what the hell.

“I bet he found the base,” Raj grunted. “I bet he found it and he's just going to leave us out here until we get the sense to go for it ourselves,” He said in certain. Jason rolled his eyes and through a rock over the fire, it had been a while, but Shane wouldn't do that, not to him. Somehow he felt like he knew Shane, as if he had for a lifetime as he had Teresa.

“Naw, we got his lighter,” Clark said humorously. “We can use it as a hostage,” He joked. They may have been lame jokes, but at least one of them still had a bit of optimism. Teresa was using Clark's chest as a pillow again, which Raj wasn't happy with, but at least it wasn't Jason's. He didn't mind so much when she would lean against or hug Clark, knowing even though she may have wanted him, she couldn't ever have him. But he got the feeling that if Jason and Teresa stayed friends, they'd be more by adulthood. Which meant Raj's heart would fall to pieces, and so would the rest of his world. Teresa yawned and hugged Clark, causing Raj to freeze and force himself to keep his eyes on the fire.

“Five more minutes and I'm going to sleep,” He said. Teresa nodded and let go of Clark. She curled up on the ground by the fire and lay there with her eyes open, just staring at the flames. Raj watched her from the corner of his eye, if only he wasn't so ugly.

“If you guys want to dose off feel free, I'm not tired, I'll wait up for Shane and get you all up when he gets here,” Jason offered, rubbing his shoulder where he was bitten, or whatever had happened to him. Clark sighed and fell into a laying position as well.

“I don't think he's coming back, buddy boy, might as well all go to sleep,” He yawned and let his eyes fall shut. Teresa was in a sleeping position but refused to fall asleep, and Raj was in deep thought, not even listening to anything they said. Jason frowned and let his head droop, maybe he'd over estimated Shane, maybe he was just a jerk like his friends. He let out a long breath and bent his neck back to crack it; he'd give it ten more minutes. Unsurprisingly only about five minutes later his eyes were falling shut, until he felt a hand on his shoulder and jumped, now they were wide open.

“Boo,” Shane said into his ear with a grin. Jason let out what he had of a laugh and turned back him.

“What took you so long?” He said, blinking a few times to wake himself up a little more. Shane jumped came out into the fire light and in plain view, plopping down next to Jason with Mark's canteen.
“I picked up a hitch hiker when I got there, clean water anyone?” He held up the Canteen. Teresa lifted her head with her eyes half shut and smiled, stretching out like a cat.

“I'll take some!” Mark growled grabbing at it in thirst; he hadn't gotten a drink from his own canteen since they'd left the camp. Shane moved it away so he couldn't reach it; the water was for the four that had been sitting out in the woods for the last hour, they could have some later. Shane had already taken a short drink himself, he'd been dying for some water that didn't taste like dirt.

“Hands off, boy,” Shane said, putting a hand in his face and pushing him away. Mark growled behind the open hand, just standing there aggravated with it clinging to his head.

“Who's that?” Jason referred to Mark, willingly taking the
offered canteen and starting to unscrew the top. Shane pushed Mark's head away with the same hand and removed it from his face, letting him fall backward.

“You're just asking for an ass kicking, man lover,” Mark threatened as he dusted himself off. “Not that I could kick your ass, but I could always hire Derek. God knows you wouldn't dare leave a scratch on him,” He rambled, Shane rolled his eyes and decided not to answer.

“This is Mark. Mark this is Raj, Teresa, Clark, and my future husband,” Shane introduced. The moment he finished Jason spit his water out all over the dirt. Shane laughed, leaning away from him to avoid getting wet. Jason calmly capped the canteen with deadly thoughts running through his head.

“All right, now you're dead,” Jason set the canteen next to him and tried to tackle Shane with the intention to hurt him. Shane dodged the attack and ran around the fire laughing with the angry kid hard on his heals; now upgrading from hurt, to kill. Eventually Shane got sick of running and let Jason catch him, sure enough, being pinned to the ground in a jiffy.

“You're such an ass!” Jason sneered and pounded on his chest. Just the idea of Shane saying something like that in front of a total stranger and his friends gave him the idea that he could get away with murder. Shane was just laughing underneath him and trying to squirm away, it was hurting quite a bit, but it was so funny. The others were just watching with raised eyebrows or mindless grins. It wasn't the kind of entertaining fight to watch, considering Shane wouldn't dare hurt Jason, and Jason couldn't have left a bruise if he tried.

“I see what's going on here,” Teresa chimed out as Jason stood off of Shane and helped him to his feet. Shane dusted himself off, still chuckling a bit when he turned to her. Just for the laugh Jason punched his arm, and this time he was actually able to get an `ouch' out of Shane.

“You're gay,” Teresa pointed and squinted at Shane.

“Um… yeah, what part of man lover did you not get?” Mark laughed, dumping the mud, sand, and other sediments out of his boots that he'd picked up on his way out there.

“And you knew?” Teresa turned to Jason. Jason sat down in the same spot he had been before and tossed the Canteen to Raj who'd finally perked up. He simply shrugged and nodded, breaking a stick in half, it had been his goal to keep that bit from Clark as long as possible.

“Yeah,” Shane shrugged walking over by Clark who was all over confused and in refusal to open his mouth.

“Great,” Raj said tiredly after taking a drink. “Two gays in the same army,”

“Mhm. And speaking of my gayness…” Shane came up from behind Clark and grabbed a handful of his hair, pulling his head back and locking their lips together. Clark was startled at first, his eyes wide he let out a surprised yelp. But soon he was into the whole idea and not only kissed back but tried to pull Shane down on top of him; he succeeded.

“Get a room,” Mark muffled his words with a cough, the others frozen in awe, Jason unable to watch. Clark put a hand on the back of Shane's head encouraging him to stay in that position. Raj rolled his eyes and looked away, being at optimist; at least it wasn't Teresa and Jason. Even though Clark was still heated for more Shane pulled away, staring down at him with a sly grin.

“So I was wondering, I know we just met, but…” He spoke softly and casually, playing with Clark's hair as he did. Clark didn't give him a chance to finish; his lips had tasted too good.

“Hell yeah,” He said shortly and pulled Shane into him again, he'd been waiting for this, he didn't expect it so soon, but he'd been waiting. Jason kicked a small rock in disappointment. They wouldn't last long together, Clark didn't stick around unless he really liked someone, and his love was not something anyone would want, not even Shane. Shane would have to find out about Clark Bates the hard way, because he'd made it clear that he wasn't going to take it the easy way.

“This is just wrong. Will you two wait until we get back to the base, then you can have a tent all to yourselves,” Raj scoffed just as he turned to see that they were still making out on the ground up the fire. Shane let up and rolled off of Clark, deciding that it was only fair that he respect his own privacy. Clark was bummed about the whole situation, period.
“I guess we should get going then,” Shane suggested. Mark jumped up next and put a hand on Shane's shoulder, saying something in his ear so that no one else could hear. “Go easy, he looks soft,” He whispered. He then looked at Clark with a wink and headed back the same way they came toward the base.

“What'd he say?” Clark hugged Shane's arm, leaning against him and looking up at his eyes. Shane didn't want to repeat it, especially not to Clark, it may have come across as offensive.

“Nothing, stupid Mark-ish shit,” He replied. He put an arm around his new, small boyfriend and headed after the others who were following Mark. Jason however, stayed behind Shane and Clark, wanting to hear everything they were talking about.

It was a short journey back to the camp; Raj, Teresa and Mark made friends quickly. Laughing at life stories and pushing each other around as if they were drunk, Raj was actually enjoying himself. Shane and Clark didn't say much at first, until Jason jumped into conversation from behind them. It was dark and cold, and there were only two light sources, two teenage constructed torches. But the six of them made it a pleasant walk this time around; unlike the other distances they'd gone together.

Shane, Clark, and Jason discussed ways that they could see each other again after returning home to the states. They all agreed that Jason would give his uncle a call, and suggest staying with him for a few weeks with his friends. David had never been the type of person to say no to company, so there was a good chance it would work for them. Both Shane and Jason had licenses, so they could visit each other whenever they wanted, and Clark would've been able to get a ride now and then.

When the camp was in site, at the edge of the woods at the top of the hill, all six stopped, it was good to be back, but now they had a feeling of what was going to happen. Shane and Mark would go back to hanging with Tony; and Clark, Teresa, Raj, and Jason would keep to themselves as they had before. Even with all they talked about, especially Shane, Clark, and Jason, a part of them just wanted things to go back to the way they were. Shane, however, couldn't let that happen, he was in love, not however, with his boyfriend.
