“Mother fuck,” Shane really shouldn't have taken it so horribly, after all, Jason was aloud to date whoever he wanted. Then again, he supposed he was just in a bad mood from the beginning. Tony had kicked his friends ass, and then he had to confront Tony about it, and then Jason kicks him out of the room barely three minutes after stepping in, what a load of shit this day was turning out to be. Raj had fallen into sudden silence after Shane's last remark, which only made Shane somehow more annoyed with the world.
“You goin' in?” He chimed out suddenly in aggravation. Raj took a few steps back as he spoke.
“No,” He said shyly. “No, I can't. God knows I wouldn't be able to bear seeing those two together,” He added. Raj knew Shane liked Jason, hell, everyone who knew the slightest bit about Shane knew that much, but he felt like he was about to say for the first time to anyone, he loved Teresa.
“Why not?” Shane asked with a tilt of his head. Why. Raj thought. Why would I tell him before anyone else, he's not my friend? But Raj began to think, he hadn't told Teresa afraid what she would think, hadn't told Jason because he cares too much to keep a secret, and hadn't told Clark because he's just a stupid bastard anyway. They may have been his friends, but something about them had always been keeping him from letting it out, though he wanted to tell at least one person.
“I've never really told anyone this before…” Raj mumbled. “But I…” He paused to swallow his saliva. “I have this crush on Teresa… and… I don't know, I'd always been afraid of those two getting together. I don't think now that they are they'll ever break up,” Raj looked at his feet. Shane was clueless as to what to do; he was good at playing big brother, but right now the last thing he wanted was others venting to him when he needed to vent himself.
“Jason told me he didn't really like her that way,” Shane said, it was the most encouragement he could dig up for his younger acquaintance. “In the woods when we were lost he told me about all this stuff, he said lots of people thought they were dating but he didn't like her as a girlfriend, I don't know what it is to you, but it's something, and it's true,” Shane shrugged. All he wanted now was a nice big glass of vodka; hell he'd even take beer, anything with alcohol.
“Really,” Raj didn't seem very interested. He was very fixed on the idea that Jason and Teresa were in love and he'd have to find someone else, someone more inside his league.
“Hey,” Shane laid a hand on his shoulder after a few moments. “You want a drink?” He smiled. Raj raised an eyebrow, completely aware that the military was very strict about privately stashed alcoholic drinks. Not to mention, if you were caught drunk Wayne wouldn't hesitate to put a bullet in your leg or shoulder. So how, and why Shane would possibly have access to anything alcoholic puzzled him, because after all that was what he'd been asking.
“Sure,” Raj felt like any idiot. He said yes, yes to a drink with a homosexual man, most likely alone. Then again Raj had never even thought about himself being the type of person that any good-looking guy or woman would ask on a date, so he was barely worried that was the case. He felt like an idiot once it had crossed his mind, it was just a friendly suggestion, he could use a drink after all.
“Cool, Mark's got his own big stash hidden away, don't tell anyone, and don't go digging around in there unless he or I give you permission. And don't tell Tony especially, for more reason than one.” Shane directed in a very firm, serious tone. Raj nodded in agreement and then followed Shane outside of the medical building.
That was probably the one thing that Tony absolutely hated about Shane. He had an unfailing ability to make friends with almost anyone he wanted, and the fact that Tony knew that Shane had always been a true friend, made it even worse. He didn't like this possessive feeling he felt he could no longer deny, the feeling that Shane belonged to him. Shane was no one's toy, or slave, but all Tony could think was that he needed that man. The crack in his heart only grew deeper as he stood just around the corner from the two's conversation, wanting to bawl his eyes out at Shane's final remark. He'd come to a conclusion that he needed to talk to Shane, that was it, no more waiting, no more letting him drift away, he needed the boy in his arms before it was too late.
Upon exiting the medical building, Tony ran right into one of the last people he wanted to see.
“Tony?” Mark exclaimed, as he'd been heading inside himself to see if Shane was there. Tony wanted to ignore him but stopped in his tracks, his eyes drenched with guilt, wondering if Mark would even think to say another word to him.
“Uhm…” Mark was baffled, yet suspicious of the sight of Tony leaving the hospital ward alone after nearly killing Jason earlier. “You didn't… you know… what did you do in there?” Mark asked, though even he wasn't really sure what he was asking.
“Nothing,” Tony grunted, half-knowing what Mark was thinking of him. “I just heard Shane tell--,” He stopped, was it really wise to go around tattling on Shane before he made a move, yes, according to his plan, it was. “He told Raj about your stash, you're lucky he said nothing about location for me to hear, but he's probably showing it off right now,” He growled.
“Pff,” Mark rolled his eyes. “Why should I care, Shane knows what he's doing,” He finished. Tony wasn't surprised, but half-disappointed that Mark wasn't going to make something of it, he was too careless after all.
“So, did your lover boy kick your ass,” Mark asked.
“He's not my lover boy!” Tony was quick to reply. “And no, not really, he just punched me, if you could call it that,” He added, starting to walk the other way.
“Well you deserved more. Then again I know you didn't mess that kid up just because he wrote on your face. You're a jealous little prick is what you are,” Mark knew it would catch Tony's attention, and like hell, it did.
“What's it to you, leave me alone and stay out of my business!” Tony warned, turning toward him but still walking away, backward. Mark stepped toward him.
“Can't, bro, care too much about you,” Mark said as rather a joke, though it was the truth. Tony simply rolled his eyes and crossed his arms, finally he stopped moving and thought he'd listen for a bit to what Mark had to say.
“For the record, I think you two would make a great couple,” Mark smirked, that was all he had to say. Tony wanted to hurt him when he turned and walked off, but he was downright sick of hurting people thank god, and continued back to his tent. Why it bothered him when Mark said that he didn't know, he really wanted to be with Shane and he was through denying. Tomorrow he'd let the world know, and most important of all he'd let Shane know. If only Shane wasn't so mad at him, he wouldn't have to go about it this way, but wishful thinking wouldn't help, it was the only way.
Mark showed up in his tent and found Shane and Raj
conversing over a single can of Miller Light. He joined the two, and grabbed his own can, greedily keeping the whole thing for himself. He mentioned nothing concerning his conversations with Tony as of late, he had a feeling Tony had his own way of coming out of the closet.
Shane, Mark and Raj hung out in that tent for nearly two full hours before the sun fell. Raj was surprised at how much he and Shane had in common, both loved crime dramas, online simulation, and sports, and they both enjoyed the same type of conversation, full of sarcasm and insulting jokes. Raj didn't think he'd ever acted so immature in his life, and the weirdest part of it was, he loved it. He wasn't drunk, half a beer can't get you drunk, but he was certainly acting like he was, as were Mark and Shane. These people were so much different, always interrupting each other with comments, and giving each other friendly smacks and punches. Raj barely remembered a time period of more than two seconds that no one was speaking.
“All right guys, let's hit the sack, see you tomorrow at lunch, eh Raj?” Shane suggested.
“Hell yeah,” Mark said with a burp.
“Hell yeah,” Raj repeated smiling, he'd had the time of his life, and all they had been doing was talking, what else had he been missing his entire life?
“All right,” Shane patted his shoulder as they left Mark's tent side by side. The two said short good-byes, and on the way back to his tent Raj realized that for the first time in a long time he was able to forget about his unnatural appearance.
Clark had been reading most of the day since they'd split up, and when the night came he simply leaned over and turned off his lantern to catch some sleep. Mark cleaned up his tent a bit and then crawled into bed himself. Tony lay staring at the ceiling, thinking over his life, present, past and future as he had been for the past four hours, and even when he noticed the darkness he was too full of thought to sleep. Teresa dosed off with her head rested on Jason's hospital bed and their fingers laced together. Jason watched her breath in her sleep, wearing a thankful smile as he gave into the sleep as well. Raj fell asleep happy, for the first time in a long time, and on what he thought would end up being the worst day of his life.
Shane, however, had one thing that he had to do, something he couldn't put off until the next day. He sighed and ran a comb threw his messy hair, (which had actually grown quite a bit longer than he realized it had) and prepared himself to make a trip to Clark's tent. They'd only made love once, but this making love wasn't love at all, and he had to end his own stupidity before things went any further between them.
Clark's eyes popped open widely when he heard the sound of his tent being unzipped. He struggled and stumbled into a sitting position as Shane stepped inside, and attempted to turn on the light, but Shane had him by the arm and stopped him. He took Clark's muscular form into his arms regrettably and hugged him closely, kissing his neck as a good-bye.
“Clark,” His voice was calm yet firm, and Clark knew immediately something to his disappointment was about to occur. “I came here to talk to you,” He said. This was even more discouraging, the sigh the preceded his words, the tone in his voice it all could have only lead to one thing. To try and stop it Clark placed a kiss on Shane's motionless lips, getting nothing in return he pulled his love closer.
“Clark…” Shane sighed again, this time deeper and in annoyance. Clark ignored it and pressed his lips once more against Shane's, once again, no response. He trailed down Shane's cheek to his neck and began sucking and biting, wanting anything, a grunt, a moan, a groan, any kind of acknowledgement of what he was doing.
“Clark,” Shane said his name in that terrifying way for the third time. “I'm breaking up with you,” He said it more harsh than he'd meant to, but he was becoming irritated by the fact that Clark wouldn't stop messing with him. “I'm sorry,” He added. Clark squeezed him tightly, no, no this wasn't supposed to happen, he wanted to have Shane to himself forever, he was happy, Shane couldn't leave him.
“No,” Clark begged in desperation. “No you're not,” He nestled his head between Shane's head and shoulder, placing another kiss on his neck. “Hold me, okay? Kiss me, don't leave me,” He begged, and begged but it wasn't going to work, Shane found it pitiful, and he barely had patience for pitiful. Clark tried to kiss his lips again but that's when Shane pulled away, back onto his feet. Clark stared down at his fingers, not wanting to make himself bare the sight of Shane leaving the tent for good. With one last thought; he let out the only thing he felt there was left to say.
“I'm gonna miss you giving me your bread everyday,” He wore a small, forced smile that Shane could just barely see in the dark. Shane turned back and smiled as well, glad that Clark was taking it without bursting into tears, as it seemed like he was going to by his first reaction.
“So, are we cool?” Shane asked. Clark was hesitant, but nodded in agreement.
“We're cool,” He said shortly and then let Shane go. He'd get him back; he'd do everything in his power to get Shane back.
Things went smooth for the most part the next morning. Tony kept his distance and didn't talk much to anyone, very content though, very happy with his plan. Shane being single was a bonus, though he didn't yet know it, it would help out the confusion of things when it all unraveled. Clark was acting better than ever, though he was bleeding inside, he liked to think ignoring it would pay off soon enough. Jason was still being held in the medical building, and was said to be there for the next couple of days until he was healed enough to walk around. Teresa visited him every break, and to his surprise he looked forward to it every two hours.
At lunch Shane Raj, Mark, Clark, and Shane sat together at a table. Teresa was visiting Jason once again, and all though Shane had thoughts about joining her, he figured he wouldn't like the feeling of being kicked out again. Teresa didn't talk to him much all day, and she shot him angry glares left and right, it was fair to say she didn't like him all that much.
“Mark, I gotta talk to you,” Tony grabbed Mark's arm in line glancing back to make sure Shane wasn't looking, or any of the others for that matter. He had a feeling that if any of the people Shane hung out with were on his side at all it would have to be Mark, so it was his only choice, and he needed someone who could get close to Shane without trouble.
“I wanna eat,” Mark pulled away.
“Please!” Tony exclaimed, apparently it was urgent. “I gotta let him know, I gotta tell him before lunch hour is over,” He tugged on Mark's sleeve.
“Tell him what, that you want to fuck his brains out?” Mark replied humorously. Tony was just downright annoyed, this was very important to him and as usual Mark was taking it as a complete joke.
“In a way, yes, I need your help though, please Mark!” Tony said. He almost regretted telling his perverted friend that yes, he did want to fuck Shane, his body ached for it, and he felt good admitting it.
“All right, what can I do though?” Mark allowed himself to ignore the actual answer to his question. Tony tugged him over behind the food line and started going over his little plan. It only took at a whole five minutes for him to explain the whole thing, but when he was finished Mark just stared, his arms crossed.
“That's stupid,” He claimed after he was certain that Tony was finished. Tony was flabbergasted, he'd thought about this all night, how in the hell could it be stupid, it was fool proof!
“What's stupid about it!” Tony exclaimed. “I thought this thing out myself, I—,”
“Nothing,” Mark cut him off. “Just the plan is stupid, having a plan is stupid. What the fuck man, I've never seen you this clueless,” He rolled his eyes. Tony raised an eyebrow obviously in disagreement.
“Tony, don't make this a huge deal. This isn't some dumb girl, it's Shane, your best friend, remember?” He knocked on Tony's head. “Just tell him how you feel,” He concluded. Tony rubbed the place on his head in pain where Mark had knocked.
“But—,” Tony didn't really know what his argument was going to be. Maybe that was his best plan, just to walk up and tell him, hope for the best.
“Here, apologize for hurting Jason, start up some small talk and when you're ready, tell him,” Mark shoved him out from behind the line. Tony looked at Shane, laughing with and poking fun at the two guys sitting at the table with him. He let out a deep breath as he stepped forward, this was it, either the beginning or end of his life, it was all going to be determined by Shane's reply.
“Where's Mark anyway?” Shane's eyes scanned the food line, but he was nowhere in sight.
“He was talking to Tony just a minute ago I think,” Raj looked back behind him, neither of the two were anywhere in site. Shane mumbled something under his breath as he stood up from his seat, but turning from the table he froze in place. Tony stood in front of him, clenching his own pant leg, looking extremely nervous.
“What do you want?” Shane scoffed at him. Damn it, that it Tony where it hurt, almost an entire twenty four hours of not speaking to each other and he got a rude “what do you want?” He was starting to think this wasn't going to work after all. He took a step back, his mouth opened but nothing came out, eventually his head dropped, and he looked down at his friend's feet.
“Well while you're figuring it out, could you move out of my way?” Shane asked. He rather regretted saying that, after all he could see Tony was sorry, but maybe sorry just wasn't going to cut it this time. Tony backed up further to let Shane through. Shane rolled his eyes and walked around Tony, but felt a desperate hand clutch his wrist before he'd taken more than a step.
“Shane,” Tony pleaded. “I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, please don't do this anymore,” He begged. Shane let out a heavy sigh, he'd known all day that this was coming, and he had in fact looked forward to it, just not dealing with it.
“Do what?” He asked finally.
“This… not talk to me and stuff. You're my friend, out here one of the few, I'm not very good at dealing with it if you hadn't noticed,” Tony avoided Shane's eyes sub-consciously and rubbed the back of his neck in guilt. Shane wasn't impressed by the way Tony refused to look at him or establish eye contact, but he took it gladly anyway.
“I did notice,” He murmured. “But I'm not the one you should apologize to, am I?” He said. If anything was about to change between them he wanted a good solid apology from Tony to Jason, breaking someone's ribs wasn't something you would just forget about and move one.
“Yeah…” Tony said. Part of him really did feel a need to make the apology, but the other part hated the thought of it. One half of him loved Shane and the other half hated anyone who tried to take his Shane, and he disliked both, but it was whom he was. “All right, well, I guess I should, I'll see-ya,” He replied finally.
“I'll come with you,” Shane nodded as Tony headed toward the medical building. He nudged Tony's shoulder with his elbow to get his attention on the way there. Tony looked up immediately in askance to meet a comforting smile and a short wink, and as usual Tony smiled back. Things were back to the way they were and both of them were glad, but of course, Tony wanted something more.
“Hey Jason,” Tony walked into the room shyly, still thinking over exactly what he was going to say and how he was going to say it. Teresa actually noticed Tony before Jason did, and before either of them could get another word out she sprung to her feet and attacked Tony.
“Bastard!” She screamed and pounded into his chest over and over. Tony fell against the wall, trying to push her away but not wanting to hurt her, he'd hurt enough already, and of course, this was a girl, can't hit a girl. Not before long Shane had her by the wrist and tugged her away from him. She turned to hit him as well but he easily had her by the other hand, as she shot him and angry glare, struggling to get free. He simply made a face at her as well, a teasing, yet hateful smirk, one eyebrow raised.
“Er…” Jason was embarrassed slightly by Teresa, though he wouldn't admit it, after all she had only been standing up for him. But now Tony was at loss when it came to words, and didn't even feel like apologizing anymore, but one thing made him force himself to do so.
“Look, kid,” Tony paused. “I didn't mean to hurt you this much, and I was a jerk for it all together. I just… I really didn't mind you writing on my face I just…well, never mind,” He didn't want to go into too much detail with Shane standing right there. “I'm not asking for you to, like, be my best friend or nothing, I just wanted to say that—I'm sorry, and I'm not gonna mess with you anymore,” He said the entire thing while looking straight at Jason's blank eyes. Jason was quite surprised, he didn't expect or require that much of an apology at all, but he liked it.
“It's okay,” He said, and then turned his head away toward Teresa. “I've gotten used to laying around in a hospital bed anyway,” He added humorously. Tony chuckled and was also satisfied with the reply, looking up at Shane who looked okay with it was well, there was only one thing left to do.
“Well, we'd better get back to lunch, bye Cupcake,” Shane chuckled and winked at Jason as he headed toward the door. Jason rolled his eyes and waved. He was happier about this than he thought he would be really, things were looking okay between he and his friends. He knew Shane wasn't going to be merciful with the nicknames, and by now he didn't really mind. But he had no idea how long he was going to wear the one he'd just been given.
