Wedding Dove
Today is the big day. Soon straightened his tie. A western wedding.
His father wanted a western wedding. At least it was a small
wedding.
“You look great,” Mai-Pai said.
“Thank you,” Soon said.
“Ready to go?” she asked. Soon cleared his throat.
“Yes,” he said. Mai-Pai held up her arm. Soon took hold of her. The
couple headed out the door.
-----------
It was a small church. There was only going to be the bride, groom,
Soon, Mai-Pai and kids, and the groom's friends. Mai-Pai pulled up
into the parking lot. Soon straightened up his tie.
“Are you okay?” his girlfriend asked.
“Yeah,” Soon said. The family got out of the car. Soon led the way
to the church. Inside felt a little chilly. Soon had to shield his
eyes.
“Gah!” he said.
“Soon?” a voice asked. The man looked up. Shin stood at the altar
in his suit waving at him.
“Dad!” Soon said. Shin put his hands on his hips.
“What are you standing around there for?” he asked. “Come up here!”
Soon shrugged. He walked up to the altar. Mai-Pai and her kids sat
down in a pew. The guests slowly walked into the church. Everyone
wore western clothes. Only one woman wore a kimono. She walked over
to Mai-Pai.
“Hello?” she asked. The younger woman looked up.
“Um… hi…” Mai-Pai said.
“Is this seat taken?” the woman asked.
“No,” Mai-Pai said.
“Thank you,” the woman said. She sat down in the pew next to
Jin.
Meanwhile, Soon stood with groomsmen. He felt so out of place. The
rest of the groomsmen were old men. Soon chuckled nervously. His
father turned and winked at him. Soon pretended not to see.
The organ player started to play the bridal march. Everyone stood
up. In came the bride. Her name was Kimiko. Soon met her once.
Perfect match for his dad. Shin smiled as Kimiko got closer. She
stood by his side.
“Please be seated,” the minister said. Everyone sat down. Shin and
Kimiko smiled at each other.
The ceremony was sweet. Soon could see how the older couple were in
love. They couldn't take their eyes off each other.
“Kimiko, do you take Shin to be your lawfully wedded husband?” the
minister asked. “To have and to hold, for richer and poorer. In
sickness and health. Until death do you part?”
“I do,” Kimiko said.
“Shin, do you take Kimiko to be your lawfully wedded wife?” the
minister asked. “To have and to hold, for richer or poorer. In
sickness and health. Until death do you part?”
“I do,” Shin said.
“I now pronounce you as man and wife,” the minister said. “You may
kiss the bride.” Shin and Kimiko kissed. Everyone clapped.
The reception was held at a party hall. The couple invited Mai-Pai
and her kids at their table.
“Are you sure it's okay?” she asked.
“Why yes,” Kimiko said.
“You are his girlfriend after all,” Shin said. Mai-Pai's cheeks
turned pink.
“Oh…” she said. Soon held her hand. The older couple didn't stop
there. Kimiko turned to Soon and Mai-Pai at dinner. She smiled at
them.
“What?” Soon asked.
“When will we see your wedding?” she asked. Soon and Mai-Pai froze.
They looked at each other and blushed. The bride and groom laughed.
Be and Jin said nothing. Shin and Kimiko smiled. Looks they had a
new project to work on.
