Production Walk
Somebody stop this, please. Soon feared the worst. It didn't help
that Mai-Pai was onboard.
“We don't have to do much,” she said. “We just give interviews.”
Soon stared at her.
“That's it?” he asked.
“Uh-huh,” Mai-Pai said. She held him by the hands. That smile made
things worse. She and Hindeo wouldn't let him back down. Why were
they so determined to have him in this movie anyway?
It could've just stopped there. Just do the interviews and it would
be fine. But no! Hollywood had to get involved.
Oh yes. Here's what happened.
Hindeo awoke to his phone ringing. He mumbled to himself as he felt
around for his phone.
“Hello?” the young man asked.
“Is this Hindeo Saitou?” a man's voice asked. Hindeo frowned.
“Yes?” he asked. “Who is this?”
“My name is Murray Phillips. I'm a producer in Hollywood.” Hindeo
quickly sat up in bed.
“Who?” he asked.
“I'm sorry, let me back up,” Murray said. “Do you remember pitching
a documentary script to me last month?” Hindeo took a moment to
think.
“I think… when was this?” the young man asked.
“You submitted it last Christmas,” the producer said. It started to
click into place.
“Well?” Hindeo asked.
“We're interested,” Murray said. “We would like to meet you in
Hollywood next week.” Hindeo's eyes widened.
“Are you serious?” he asked.
“Yes,” Murray said. “Is that okay with you?”
“Why yes,” Hindeo said. “Thank you so much!” They spoke on the
phone on the basic details before they hung up moments later.
Hindeo grinned and pumped his fist in the air.
“Yes!” he shouted. From there, things started to snowball.

Soon had an odd look on his face.
“What?!” he asked. Mai-Pai and Hindeo nodded. The man shook his
head.
“No way. You can't be serious,” he said.
“Think about it!” Hindeo said. “The whole world will hear your
voice!” Soon thought he would faint. Hindeo raised his eyebrow.
“Are you feeling okay?” he asked. Soon slowly shook his head.
“No…” he said. He sank down into his chair. Mai-Pai turned to
Hindeo.
“Could you give us a moment, please?” she asked.
“Oh, sure, sure,” Hindeo said. He turned and walked out the door.
Mai-Pai took Soon by the hand. He moved his eyes to her. She gave
him a little smile.
“Don't worry, dear,” she said. “We'll make this work.” Soon turned
his head. By now, he knew it was too late to argue. They were doing
this. They really were doing this.
By Sunday, they were on a plane to Hollywood. Mai-Pai held Soon's
hand. Her reassuring smile wasn't helping anymore. Soon had a
sinking feeling about this project.
The couple landed on American soil by Monday afternoon. Hindeo was
there to greet them. He held his arms.
“Welcome to Hollywood!” the young man shouted in English.
Hollywood, Baby!
