Back to Work

Hollywood was the vacation. But Mai-Pai had to work. Soon was happy to go home. One day in Hollywood was enough for him. He breathed out on the plane.

“That was too much,” he said. Mai-Pai rested her head on his shoulder.

“I know,” she said. “I know, dearest.” Soon looked down at his hands. Two hours in a cold studio. They asked personal questions. Too personal. Some wounds didn't need to be reopened. He felt drained when it was all over.

Mai-Pai rubbed him on the back on the plane. Soon turned his head.

“Are you okay?” Mai-Pai asked. Her boyfriend shook his head.

“No,” he said. Mai-Pai pulled him into her arms for a hug.

Chiko was surprised to see Mai-Pai back.

“You're back?” she asked. “How was Hollywood?” Mai-Pai threw back her head and groaned.

“Exhausting,” she said. “Soon had it worst. How have things been going here?” Chiko looked nervous at first.

“It was fine until that lady called,” she admitted in a low voice. Mai-Pai frowned.

“What did she say?” she asked.

“She's not happy with the order,” Chiko said. Her boss sighed.

“Did you tell her what I said to do?” she asked.

“Yes,” the younger woman said.

“And that didn't work?” Mai-Pai asked. Chiko shook her head. The manager sighed and rubbed her forehead.

“You let me deal with her,” she said. “Just start the day.”

“Yes ma'am,” Chiko said. She hurried to the front. Mai-Pai sighed and straightened her hair. Suzuki-san. She couldn't wait until today, could she? So annoying.

“Oh well,” Mai-Pai muttered to herself. “Can't be helped.” She headed to the back. Just another day at work. However, Mai-Pai kept her phone by her side. Maybe this day would be different. She looked over at Chiko. Maybe it was time to retire. The older woman shook her head. She had so much going on around her.

“I need to sit down,” she said to herself. Mai-Pai sat down at her desk and took a breath.
