New Company

Chiko hit a rough patch. She came home to a note on her door. She had a confused look on her face.

“Huh?” Chiko asked. She pulled down the note for a better look. Her heart sank.

“No…” she said. Chiko sank to her knees. She thought she had more time. What changed? She could feel her hands trembling.

--------

Chiko couldn't focus at work.

“Chiko? Chiko?”

The young woman quickly looked up. Mai-Pai frowned.

“Is something wrong?” she asked. Chiko paused before looking down.

“I got evicted last night,” she said.

“Oh no,” Mai-Pai said. “What happened? Why would they do that?” Chiko sighed.

“It's an old building,” she said. “They ae tearing it down. I thought I would have more time.” She dropped her shoulders. Mai-Pai patted her on the back. Chiko looked up. Her boss gave her a little smile.

“Come stay with me,” she said. The sectary stared at her with big eyes.

“What?” she asked. She started to speak, but Mai-Pai held up her hand.

“It's fine,” she said. “I don't mind it.” Chiko didn't know what to say. She bowed her head.

“Thank you,” she said at last. Mai-Pai smiled.

“You're welcome. Happy to help,” she said. Chiko nervously chuckled. This seemed a bit… much.

---------

“You sure this is a good idea?” Soon asked.

“I had to help her,” Mai-Pai said. She started cleaning the guest room.

“She has nowhere to go,” she said. “It's just to help her for the time being.” Soon shrugged. It wasn't the worst idea she's had. He walked over to her side and helped her clean up.

“When is she moving in?” Soon asked.

“Tomorrow morning,” Mai-Pai said.

“That soon?” her boyfriend asked.

“Her former landlady is kicking everyone out in forty-eight hours,” Mai-Pai said.

“Damn,” Soon said.

“Yeah,” she said. The bed was cleared away within minutes. Mai-Pai tilted her head.

“Do you think we should paint the walls?” she asked.

“I don't know,” Soon said. Suddenly, the doorbell rang.

“I'll get it,” Mai-Pai said. She turned and walked out of the room. Soon followed behind. His girlfriend opened the front door. Chiko stood outside. The older couple looked confused.

“Uh… hi…” Chiko said. Mai-Pai blinked.

“You're here early,” she said.

“Hello Watabe-san,” Soon said.

“Hello, Gok-san,” Chiko said. There was a pause.

“Uh… can I come in?” Chiko asked.

“Oh! Sure!” Mai-Pai said. She and Soon moved aside.

“Thank you,” the secretary said. She walked into the house. Mai-Pai closed the door behind her.
