Wedding Steps
Today was the big day. Soon and Mai-Pai didn't want a lavish wedding. A trip to the courthouse would do fine. Mai-Pai picked out her best dress. She even had her hair done up in a bun.
“How do I look?” she asked.
“Beautiful,” Be said. Mai-Pai twirled around. Her daughter stood up.
“Ready to go?” she asked.
“Yeah,” the bride said. The women headed out of the room. Jin was already downstairs. He stood up from the couch.
“Ready?” he asked. Be tucked her hair behind her ear.
“Yeah,” she said. Mai-Pai nodded. Jin led the way to the car. Mai-Pai froze once they got outside.
“Oh,” she said. Steven stood by the car.
“Hello,” he said. Mai-Pai's eyes widened.
“You're here?” she asked.
“Yes,” her brother-in-law said.
“I called him over,” Jin said. Mai-Pai looked so pale. Be patted her on the shoulder.
“It's okay, mom,” she whispered. “I'll keep Aunt Pumpkin away.” The bride bowed her head.
“Thank you,” she said. The family climbed into the car. The women sat in the back. Jin sat in the passenger seat. Steve pulled out of the driveway.

Soon waited at the courthouse. He paced around in his suit. The man took a breath. The wedding would start at three. There weren't going to be many people in the audience. It would just be family, some friends, and Hindeo. (The latter had to come.) Soon walked back into the building.
Shin and Hindeo were already sitting on the bench. The latter played with his camera. But they weren't the only ones here. Soon frowned and shook his head.
“Why did he have to invite his friends too?” he asked himself. Twelve old men and nine old women packed the court. Soon took a breath.
Oh boy…
----------
Steven pulled up to the parking lot. He got out of the car and went over to Mai-Pai's side. He unlocked it and opened it.
“Thank you, sir,” she said. He helped her out of the car. Her children followed behind. Pumpkin stood at the doorway. Mai-Pai's eyes widened. Be held her hand.
“I'm here, mom,” she whispered. The bride tried to relax. The party made it up to the courthouse.
“You're late,” Pumpkin said with her hands on her hips.
“No, we're not,” Jin said. His aunt tapped her wrist.
“You were supposed to be here an hour earlier!” she said.
“Come on, dear,” Steven said. His wife frowned.
“Look, can we go inside?” Be asked. Pumpkin cleared her throat.
“Fine,” she said. Everyone went inside.
---------
Everyone stood up. Mai-Pai walked down the aisle. She looked so cute in her white sundress and veil. Soon couldn't help but smile. His bride stood next to him.
“Please be seated,” the clerk said. Everyone sat down. Soon held Mai-Pai's hand. Suddenly, the bride felt better. This felt right. Their dream was coming true.
“Soon, do you take Mai-Pai to be your lawfully wedded wife? In sickness and in health. For better or for worse. `Til death do you part?” the clerk asked.
“I do,” the groom said.
“Mai-Pai, do you take Soon to be your lawfully wedded husband? In sickness and in health. `Til death do you part?” the clerk asked.
“I do,” Mai-Pai said.
“I now pronounce man and wife,” the clerk said. “You may now kiss the bride.” Soon and Mai-Pai kissed. Everyone cheered. They were now married.
