Sail Joy
Soon is bored again. He's got nothing to do at home. Mai-Pai
suggested some hobbies.
“Like what?” her husband asked. Mai-Pai shrugged.
“I don't know,” she said. “But you'll find something.” She patted
him on the back. Soon forced himself to smile.
So, the hunt began.
He started with reading. Fine, but he needed more. Maybe something
small. Puzzles? No. Computer games. No. Maybe gardening? Soon
frowned and shook his head. Him gardening? Like that was going to
happen. What now?
The answer came from an odd place.
Soon was watching TV this morning. Not really watching. Just
flipping through channels. Nothing to see here. Flip. Flip.
Flip.
Hang on.
Soon leaned in for a closer look. The boat on the screen looked
new. It wasn't a fancy boat. Still, it held his attention. So much
blue and blue. It was Soon was in a trance.
“Wow.” From there, the pieces fell into place.
----------
Now, Soon was going to do something like take up sailing all of a
sudden. No, he was doing something simpler. Soon made his way to
the hobby shop.
“Welcome!” the clerk greeted him. “What can I get you today?” Soon
walked up to the counter.
“Ah, yes, do you have any boat model kits?” he asked.
“Oh! Is this for your grandson?” the clerk asked.
“No, it's for me,” Soon said. He could've sworn that was imagining
things but the clerk seemed to be frowning at him for a second.
“Oh, okay,” the clerk said. “What kind would you like?” Soon
blinked.
“Excuse me?” he asked. The clerk gave him a smile of pity.
“Is this your first time?” he asked. The older man's face felt
hot.
“Yes,” he mumbled. The clerk leaned in closer.
“I can help you out,” he said. Soon nervously laughed.
“Sure,” he said. This now felt like a bad idea. Too late to turn
back now. He might as well keep going. Soon felt his face hurt. Oh
boy…
----------
Still, he kept going. Soon had to try it. Mai-Pai wouldn't
complain. This was something to do. Soon looked down at his new
box. The clerk gave him the easiest one the store owned. It felt
humiliating. But he needed a start. Well, here he was. Soon took a
breath and opened the box. This afternoon is going to be
interesting. He wished himself luck and got to work.
