Escape
It's back to the countryside. Everyone's so nice. Too nice. Always
smiling. They tried to be sociable at every turn. The neighbors
kept trying to feed Soon and Mai-Pai. The couple couldn't take
it.
“Want to get out of here?” Soon asked.
“Yes!” Mai-Pai said. She paused for a moment.
“But go where?” she asked. Soon shrugged.
“I don't know. Anywhere?” he said.
“Okay,” his wife said.
“Seriously?” he asked.
“Yes,” she said.
“Right now?”
“Right now.”
Soon didn't know how to react at first. “Wow.”
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. The couple looked up.
“Hello?” an old woman asked. Soon and Mai-Pai stared at each
other.
“Now,” they whispered. The couple crept to the back door. More
knocking sounded on the door.
“Hello? Hello?” the old lady asked. That pushed the couple to run
faster. Soon unlocked the back door. Mai-Pai dashed out first. Her
husband closed the door behind him. The couple ran across the small
yard to the road. They stopped to catch their breaths. They laughed
for a moment.
“Now what?” Mai-Pai asked. Soon shrugged.
-----------
The couple walked down a dirt road. They had no plans. Mai-Pai
stretched her arms above her head.
“Mmm,” she said. Soon smiled next to her. It was a warm spring
morning today. The sun was out. It might rain today. Soon put his
arm around Mai-Pai's shoulders. She cuddled up to his side.
“So what are we doing today?” she asked.
“Nothing,” he said. She gave him a curious look.
“Nothing?” Mai-Pai asked. Her husband smiled.
“Nothing,” he said. The couple giggled. Still, that left one more
problem.
“Think anyone will see us out here?” Mai-Pai asked.
“I hope not,” Soon said.
“What do we do if they do?”
“Hide.”
She frowned. “Really?”
“What else can we do?” They looked down the road. Good, no one else
was there. Mai-Pai looked left and right.
“Well, we could his in the woods,” she said. Soon looked to his
right.
“Heh,” he said. “I suppose.” His wife held his hand. Mai-Pai
giggled.
“Shall we keep going?” Soon asked.
“Why yes,” his wife said. The couple walked down the hall. The old
lady probably gave up by now. Mai-Pai frowned.
“Wha twill we do when we get back?” she asked.
“I don't know,” Soon said.
“Heh,” his wife said. Nature filled the silence of their walk.
