Dead Stone

Pumpkin always has to have drama in her life. Steven knew this well. This time, she thinks she's dying.

“I don't want to die,” Pumpkin wailed. Steven patted her on the head.

“No, you're not,” he said. “You'll be fine.” She looked up at him, frowning.

“How can you say that?” she asked. She looked ready to cry. Her husband sighed.

“Aw, come here,” he said. Steven hugged his wife. She cried on his chest. Steven rolled his eyes.

“Oh boy…” he said to himself. He was going to need help with this.

Mai-Pai's phone rang on the end table.

“Hello?” she asked.

“Hey, Mai-Pai,” Steven said.

“Yeah?” she asked.

“Uh… I'm going to need some help,” he said. Mai-Pai frowned.

“What is it?” she asked. Steven sighed.

“It's Pumpkin. She thinks she's dying,” Steven said. Mai-Pai raised her eyebrow.

“Why do you say that?” she asked.

“It's a minor surgery,” Steven said.

“Oh,” she said. The woman didn't need to ask.

“So… what do you want?” she asked. There was a pause on the other line.

“Hello?” Mai-Pai asked. Steven nervously laughed.

“Could you please talk to her?” he asked. Mai-Pai made a face.

“Huh?!” she asked. She should've seen this coming, but still…

The woman sighed.

“Fine,” she said. “I'll see what I can do.”

“Thank you,” Steven said breathlessly. Mai-Pai nervously giggled.

“Right…” she said. Why did she say that?

----------

“You said what?” Soon asked. Mai-Pai lowered her head.

“I'm so sorry,” she said. Soon shook his head.

“Never mind,” he said. “What are you going to do?” Mai-Pai made a face.

“What am I going to do?” she asked. Soon shrugged and shook his head. Mai-Pai groaned and threw back her head.

“Why?! Why did I say that?!” she asked. Her husband said nothing. The woman sighed.

---------

That evening, Mai-Pai made the call.

“Hello?” Pumpkin asked. Her sister-in-law forced herself to smile.

“Hey!” Mai-Pai said. “How are you doing?” She braced herself for more complaints.
