Summer Heroes

They aren't sure what's going on here. Somehow, the country folks come to Soon and Mai-Pai for help. The couple didn't know what to make of this.

“What is this?” Mai-Pai asked. Soon shook his head.

A knock came on the door. Who was it now? The couple looked at each other.

“You get it this time,” they said to one another. The couple frowned.

“I got it last time!” Mai-Pai said.

“But I'm too tired to get it,” Soon complained.

“So am I,” she said. The couple stared at each other.

“Want to get it together?” Soon asked. His wife sighed.

“Fine,” she said. They walked to the front door. Mai-Pai looked out the peephole.

“Who is it?” she asked. A small old lady stood outside. Mai-Pai looked confused. The woman opened the door.

“Hello?” she asked. The little old lady looked up.

“Oh hello,” she said. “How have you been?”

“Uh… fine,” Soon said. “And you?” The old lady paced for a bit.

“Um…” she said. “I might need a little help.” She looked down at her hands. Soon and Mai-Pai looked at each other.

“Would you like to come in?” Mai-Pai asked. The old lady lifted her head.

“Thank you so much,” she said.

“Sure…” Mai-Pai said. The old lady bowed before going inside. Soon closed the door behind her.

Everyone sat in the kitchen. No one spoke at first.

“So… what can we do?” Mai-Pai asked. Soon turned his head. The old lady pressed her lips together.

“Well…” she began. She paused for a moment.

“It's kind of personal,” she said.

“It's okay,” Mai-Pai said. “Take your time.” Her husband eyed her. He had to admit that she was good. The old lady took a breath.

“It's my son,” she said. She took a pause.

“He… He…” She lifted her chin.

“I think he might be joining a cult!” she blurted out. The couple looked at each other. Okay… Not what they were expecting.

“What makes you say that?” Soon asked. The old woman shifted in place.

“I found this in her room,” she said. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a crumbled-up flyer. Mai-Pai took it and read it. Soon read with her. They both looked confused.

“What is this?” Mai-Pai asked. She looked up to see the old woman looking worried.

“I don't know!” she said. “I tried to ask him but he won't talk to me!” She looked ready to cry. Mai-Pai took her by the hand.

“Don't worry,” she said. “We'll see what we can do.” Soon whipped his head around.

“Are you sure?” he mouthed. Mai-Pai pretended not to see him. The man sighed but tried to make himself smile.

“This is our place!” Soon complained after the old lady left.

“We can't turn her away,” Mai-Pai said.

“Yeah but a cult?” he asked.

“I might not be that,” she said. “We just have to look.”

“And if is?” her husband asked. Mai-Pai shrugged. Soon sighed and shook his head. How did they become the heroes of this village? The couple don't know. But they have to take the role. Because no one else will. Oh boy…
