Old Brave Dog

Soon's been acting strange lately. What's with this bravery act lately? Mai-Pai doesn't know how to confront this.

“Honey,” she said at the table one morning.

“Yeah?” Soon asked.

“Are you feeling okay?” Mai-Pai asked.

“Sure! Why do you ask?” he asked. His wife pressed her lips together. How was she going to say this?

“You seem…” she began. Soon waited for a reply. Mai-Pai dropped her shoulders.

“Never mind. Just forget about it,” she said. She shoved more food into her mouth. This wasn't good. Best to stay by him for the time being. That wasn't going to be easy.

She was right. It started with a request. The couple's doorbell rang.

“I've got it!” Soon said. He got up and walked to the door. Mai-Pai trailed behind. She stood in the doorway as her husband opened the door.

“Choko?” Soon asked. Mai-Pai blinked. What? What was she doing here? Choko looked like she had been crying.

“Choko-chan?” Soon asked. “What's the matter? What are you doing here?” The younger woman sniffled.

“Is Gok-san in?” she asked.

“I'm here, I can help you,” Soon said. Choko looked up at him. Mai-Pai walked up to her husband's side.

The three of them sat in the living room. Choko sat on the couch and cried.

“There, there,” Mai-Pai said, rubbing her shoulders. Soon walked in with a cup of tea.

“Here,” he said.

“Thank you,” Choko whispered. Soon sat down next to her as she took a sip.

“So, what happened? What's wrong?” Mai-Pai asked. Choko whimpered. She wiped away her tears.

“He lied to me!” she wailed. “I got stood up!” The older couple frowned.

“What happened? Who stood you up?” Mai-Pai asked. Choko lifted her chin.

“Daisuke,” she said. “I thought he was the one!” New tears formed in her eyes.

“He was so sweet too!” the young woman said. Mai-Pai put her arm around her shoulders. Choko broke down crying. Soon closed his fists in his lap.

“Where is he now?” he asked. The women looked up.

“What?” Choko asked.

“Where is he now?” Soon asked again. Mai-Pai frowned.

“What are you going to do?” she asked. Her husband stood up.

“I'm just going to talk to him,” he said.

“How?” Mai-Pai asked, wrinkling her nose. Soon took a moment to think.

“I'll think of something,” he said. Mai-Pai stood up.

“Soon, a word,” she said. She walked to the kitchen. Confused, Soon followed behind.

“What's gotten into you?” Mai-Pai asked. Soon stared at her.

“What do you mean?” he asked. His wife rubbed her forehead.

“You've been acting too bold lately,” she said. “You don't have a plan and you're going to confront a young man you don't know. We haven't heard his side of the story.” Soon stared at her.

“Oh…” he said.

“What's with you?” Mai-Pai asked. Soon stared at her for a moment. He rubbed the back of his head.

“A new class?” he said.

“What new class?” Mai-Pai asked.

“It was online,” her husband said. “Jin showed me.”

“Jin showed you?”

“Yeah.” Soon paused. “Did I do something wrong?” His wife shook her head.

“No,” she said. “No.” She threw her hand sin the air.

“No, no, no, no,” Mai-Pai said. Oh boy…
