Stuffy

There's nothing in Mai-Pai's eyes. What was the point anymore? It was the same thing. It was the same thing. She sat back in her chair and sighed.

“Something wrong?” Chiko asked. Mai-Pai jerked her head up.

“Huh?” she asked. Her employee tilted her head.

“Are you all right?” she asked. Her boss stared for a moment.

“I guess…” she said. Mai-Pai dropped her head.

“No!” she wailed.

“What's wrong?” Chiko asked. Mai-Pai sat back and sighed.

“I don't know,” she said. She looked up at the ceiling.

“I'm just…” Mai-Pai said. “Just…” She dropped her shoulders.

“Are you bored?” Chiko asked. Mai-Pai nodded.

“I don't get it!” she said. “I feel like I am doing nothing with life.” She buried her head in her hands.

“I don't know what to do with myself,” she said. Chiko wondered if she should say anything or not. Soon asked her not to.

Suddenly, the phone rang. Mai-Pai picked up her receiver.

“Hello?” she asked.

“Mai-Pai!” Soon said on the other line.

“Yeah?” his wife asked.

“Are you busy today?” Soon asked.

“No?” Mai-Pai said. “Why?”

“Come out with me,” he said.

“Why?” she asked again.

“You'll see. Just come with me. Please?” her husband asked. Mai-Pai looked at Chiko. She tried not to make eye contact. Was she… whistling? Mai-Pai narrowed her eyes.

“Okay…” she said.

“Great! I'll pick you up in a few minutes,” Soon said. “See you then.” He hung up before his wife could say a word. Mai-Pai stared at the phone. What was going on?

Around lunch, Soon came up to the store. He found Mai-Pai in her office. She stood in the doorway, frowning.

“What do you want?” she asked. Soon held out his hand.

“Come with me,” he said. “I want to show you something.”

“What?” Mai-Pai asked. Her husband grinned.

“Just come see,” he said. Mai-Pai hated surprises. Why was he doing this? Chiko sat at her desk quietly. Her boss rolled her eyes.

“Fine,” she said. She took her husband's hand. Soon smiled as he led her out the door. He winked at Chiko. The younger woman went back to work.

“Why are we out here?” Mai-Pai asked. Soon turned to her, grinning.

“Take a look,” he said. His wife looked around.

“It's a park,” she said.

“Yes,” he said. “Isn't it lovely?” The man held out his arms.

“No,” Mai-Pai said. Soon leaned in close to her face.

“Come on,” he said. “Let's just enjoy the day.” He took her by the hand. Mai-Pai followed behind to the blanket under the tree. He was trying. This wasn't going to change much. Still, she was here. The couple sat down on the blanket.

“This is nice, isn't it?” Soon asked. Mai-Pai pressed her lips together and nodded.

“Yeah,” she muttered. “I guess.” This would have to do for now. She supposed. Mai-Pai forced herself to smile. Oh boy…
