Growing Up
Hindeo frowned at the latest report in his hand. The numbers
weren't good. The documentary screening was a flop. The producer
had been fired. The documentary was going to be shelved. It had
been for nothing.
Hindeo sighed. Now what? He picked up his phone.
“Hello?” Be asked. Hindeo leaned back in his chair.
“Are you doing anything right now?” he asked.
“No… why?” she asked.
“Have lunch with me,” Hindeo said. “Please?”
“Where?” she asked.
“Do you feel like Italian today?” he asked. There came a pause.
“Sure,” she said at last. Hindeo bowed his head.
“Thank you,” he said softly. “I'll pick you up in a few minutes.”
He hung up and tried to cheer up.

They went to a small Italian caf near campus. Be folded her arms
across her chest.
“What did you want?” she asked. Hindeo rubbed her forehead and
sighed.
“It's been a waste,” he said.
“What?” Be asked. He lifted his head.
“It's a flop,” Hindeo said. “They hate the film.”
“Oh,” she said. “I'm sorry to hear that.” He pressed his lips
together.
“I'm going to go to New York this summer,” he said.
“Okay…” Be said. He took her by the hand.
“Come with me.”
She blinked at him. “What?”
“I want you to come with me to New York. Please?”
“Why?!” She didn't care who was staring at her. Hindeo looked hurt.
Be found this alarming.
“Hindeo?” she asked.
“I love you,” he said. Her jaw dropped. She struggled to speak but
no words came out.
“Do you remember what you said to me last time?” he asked. Be
slowly shook her head.
“Well, I am making up my mind,” Hindeo said.
“Huh?” she asked.
“You said that I have to choose you or my career. Well, I choose
both.” He looked her in the eye.
“I am taking an internship in New York. I won't go without
you.”
“What are you saying?” Be asked. Hindeo looked her in the eye.
“Will you marry me?” he asked. Be looked like she was about to
faint. He kept his eyes on her.
“Are you serious?” she asked.
“Yes,” he said. He wouldn't let her go. Be couldn't answer. Hindeo
waited patiently. She dropped her shoulders.
“Can I think about it?” she asked at last. Hindeo bowed his
head.
“Of course,” he said. He let go with a smile on his face. Be
frowned and sat back. This idiot could be so annoying. But why
couldn't she say no? Hindeo sat across grinning at her.
