Chapter 8:
Aiko pulled up next to tall apartment building. Driving into the visitor area, she pulled into one of the spots. She took a deep breath and stepped out of the car. Looking up at Matthew's building, Aiko felt a mixture of emotions: nervousness, anxious, excited. All at once. Anything could happen that night.
Exhaling loudly she made her way to the buildings entrance. It actually had one of those fancy dressed doormen standing out in front.
“Hello Miss,” the man said politely.
“Umm… hi,” she said awkwardly, not used to this sort of thing. “I'm here to see Matthew McKenzie. My name's Aiko.”
“Uh yes, he said he was expecting company. Go right ahead.” The doorman held open the door for her and smiled politely.
“Thank you,” she said smiling back.
She made her way over to the elevator. When it dinged open she half expected to see an elevator man inside, but to her relief there wasn't one. She pushed the floor number, the top floor, and waited patiently as the numbers increased and finally for the door to open.
Aiko walked out into a nicely lit hallway. And looked for apartment 1002. When she found it, she took another breath and knocked on the door, only to let it out a few seconds later when the door opened.
There was Matthew, smiling widely, his eyes twinkling, as handsome as ever in an emerald green dress shirt and black pants. He looked amazing and all she could do was stand there and grin like a fool.
“Hi,” he said, finally.
“Hey,” she said quickly, obviously flustered by his presence.
“Come in,” he said, holding the door open for her. “You're just in time. I've just finished making dinner.”
Aiko smelled something really good. “Whatever it is it smells delicious.”
“Well I hope you like chicken Alfredo primavera,” he said, hopefully.
“Love it,” she reassured. “So you play hockey and cook, what other amazing things can you do?” she teased.
“Hmm… stick around and you just might find out.” She knew he meant it to sound mischievous but it took her breath away and for a minute they stood there staring at each other intensely. Finally Matthew shook himself out his revere. “Here let me take your coat.”
He pulled off the long, pastel pink coat-- though it was the end of April it was still a little chilly.
“Thank you,” she murmured. She turned around to face him and saw that he was again staring at her. “What?” she said, suddenly feeling panicked.
“No—Nothing. It's just you're beautiful,” he stated in awe.
She looked down at her outfit, a simple figure hugging, knee length skirt and a matching camisole in lavender satin.
She blushed furiously. “Thank you,” she mumbled; she tried not to fidget under his intense gaze.
“Umm… I'll hang this up for you,” he said, indicating the coat, but not taking his eyes off her. He backed away only to knock into the couch.
“Careful.” She giggled.
“Uh… yeah,” he said awkwardly. “I'll be right back.”
He disappeared through a far door and Aiko had a minute to take in her surroundings. The large living room was off to the left and the kitchen was at the right. They were open to each other so that you could see into both. The dining room was in the far right corner and she could see a small table for two already set, with candles and everything. She smiled at that. Past the living room was a long hallway where she assumed was the bedrooms and bathroom.
Aiko walked into the living room and was drawn to a mantle over the fireplace, lined with photographs. Aiko noticed that Matthew was just as cute when he was little as he was now, though his ears were a little floppier. She smiled brightly at a picture of him with an older couple, which she assumed were his parents. His arms were wrapped around both his mother and father, all clad in an Oilers jersey, they looked very happy.
“I see you've found the embarrassing picture mantle already. My mom insists on having them here,” she heard from behind her.
Aiko turned around to see Matthew standing there, hands in his pockets, looking sheepish.
“Embarrassing how? They're all so cute,” Aiko said affectionately.
Matthew came to stand next to her. He picked up a photo where he was about ten years old. “Yeah right, more like goofy looking. Did you see my ears?”
“Yes,” she stated. “They were so cute!”
He smiled at her, replacing the picture. “Yeah, well I'm just glad I grew into them.”
Impulsively she threw her arms around his neck and said, “You grew up quite nicely if I do say so myself.”
He bent forward to meet her face-to-face and teased, “Do you? What else do you think I grew into?”
She flushed slightly, but didn't back down. “Well I can't answer that until I'm fully acquainted with everything about you.”
Her comment led to a moment of intense looks. A little frustrated with just looking, Matthew inched closer and closer until their lips were just a hairs breath apart.
And just as they were about to close that miniscule distance a loud ding interrupted them.
Matthew leaned back and sighed. “I guess we should eat before it gets cold.”
“Yeah I guess,” she replied, food being the last thing on her mind.
