Chapter 6: Coming to Terms
Kellen felt like he was in a daze all the next day. He had slept badly, dreaming of Zach and waking up repeatedly with an aching hard-on. By lunch time, he had a strong desire to skip practice, go home and try to sleep, although he wondered if he would be able to. He met Brett for lunch like he always did, but he was not much in the way of company.
“What's the matter with you?” Brett inquired curiously as he munched on his sandwich. He always brought a homemade lunch because he usually didn't have enough money to buy a school lunch. “I thought you were gonna fall asleep in math.”
Kellen rubbed his eyes wearily, wondering just how much he should tell Brett. After all, his relationship with Zach was no secret as far as Brett was concerned, but there were some things he had been keeping to himself. But then again… “I think I'm addicted to anal sex,” Kellen finally confessed in a low voice. “No matter how many times Zach and I do it, I still want more.”
“Is it really that good?” Brett asked, his eyebrows lifting in surprise. “I mean, you got lucky with Karin Hanson the other day. Is it better up the ass than…?”
Kellen nodded slowly. “It is for me. I don't know why, but when Zach starts touching me, I just lose control. I got off pretty good when I did it with Karen and I think I satisfied her pretty well, but it was nothing like what happens when Zach is doing it to me. It's mind-blowing.”
Brett pursed his lips. “Maybe you're bi. If you like doing it with girls and guys…”
Kellen ran his fingers through his hair. “I've heard people say that bisexuals are just people who won't admit they're gay.”
Brett chuckled. “I think people who say that are just jealous because bisexuals can always get lucky.”
Kellen laughed softly for a moment, but then his expression sank back into a frown. “But I've never been interested in guys before and Zach is the only one who makes me want sex. But if I am…” Kellen blew out a nervous sigh. “If I am gay, will all my friends drop me?”
“I won't,” Brett said firmly. “We've been best buds since first grade. You can't run out on that kind of history.” He grinned lopsidedly. “And anyone who dumps you was never a friend to begin with, in my opinion. It's not right to judge someone by how he likes to do it.”
Kellen managed a small smile and he ducked his head in a quick nod. “Thanks, man. I appreciate that.”
“Anyway,” Brett continued seriously, “if you are gonna fall for a guy, I guess Zach is a good choice.”
“How so?” Kellen was surprised.
Brett shrugged. “He's a pretty nice guy. He helps out at the homework center in the library a lot. I think he goes there to wait for you to get out of practice sometimes. Anyway, he's helped me with my homework a couple of times. I like him because he doesn't talk down to me when I don't get it. He just keeps trying different ways to explain it until it makes sense. He's like that with everybody. He's pretty popular.”
“I didn't know that. I thought all his friends were geeks and nerds. Except for me,” Kellen added with a laugh.
“Mostly,” Brett agreed, “but people who use the homework center a lot like him.”
“Huh.”
“Anyway, don't stress over it. If it doesn't work out with Zach, at least it got you hooked up with Karin.”
“True.” Kellen smiled crookedly. He punched Brett lightly on the arm. “That's what I like about you, man. You can always put things in the right perspective.”
“It's a gift.”
Kellen chuckled as he thought over what Brett had said. His friend did have a knack for sweeping away the extraneous stuff and getting to the heart of the matter. And his advice made Kellen realize that his relationship with Zach had brought him to the attention of girls interested in a quick hook-up. So if he did stop seeing Zach, he was still likely to get laid regularly. The conversation put him in a better frame of mind, so he went to practice feeling ready to put some effort into it. The coach didn't keep them at practice long, however. He wanted them sharp for the meet on Thursday. So Kellen arrived home much earlier than usual that afternoon, since he and Zach had agreed not to meet that day.
His mom greeted him with a smile when he walked into the kitchen. “You're home early, honey. You didn't stop by Zach's today?”
“No.” Kellen was a little surprised. He hadn't realized that his mother knew that was where he spent most of his afternoons these days. He opened the fridge to get a soda.
“Kellen?”
“Yeah, Mom?”
“Are you sleeping with Zach?”
“M...Mom?” Kellen could feel the blush start somewhere around the middle of his chest and work its way up to his hairline. Even the tops of his ears felt hot. His suddenly nerveless fingers let the refrigerator door swing shut.
His mother smiled and rested her forearms on his shoulders, her hands clasped behind his neck. “I remember when I didn't have to look up at you when I did this,” she said disarmingly. “I don't mean to embarrass you, sweetheart, and you know I love you no matter what the answer is, but I have to ask because, well…” She blinked several times. “Are you being safe?”
Kellen wished fervently the floor would open up and swallow him. But of course nothing happened. All he could do was stand there and return his mother's earnest, concerned gaze. He swallowed. “Uh… well… yeah, we are having sex.” He said the words fast, hoping it would be less embarrassing if they came out quickly. It wasn't. He was surprised his burning cheeks didn't ignite the air around him.
“And you're practicing safe sex?” she prompted him.
“Yeah.” He looked down. “This is really embarrassing.”
“I know.” She tickled the back of his neck with her fingertips. “But I want you to understand something. I don't want you to feel like you have to keep something a secret from me because I'll be ashamed of you or embarrassed, because that will never happen.”
Kellen managed a small smile. “Thanks, Mom. That does make me feel better.” Then he laughed self-consciously. “But it doesn't make it any easier to talk about.”
She laughed. “I'm not going to press you for details.” She stepped back and then quickly tickled his ribs. “Now help me with dinner.”
Kellen squirmed away from her twitching fingers, laughing. “Yeah, ok! Stop that!”

Zach rode his bike to the swim meet, which was being held at another school. On the way over, he kept thinking about Karin Hanson. Karin had made no secret of the fact that she had fucked Kellen on Monday afternoon and that he had really satisfied her. The way she told the story, as Zach had heard it, made it sound like she was gloating, as if scoring with Kellen were some kind of victory. Maybe it was, in a way. With rumors swirling around the school that Kellen might be gay, proving otherwise by getting him in bed probably was something to brag about. Zach wondered how she would feel if she knew Kellen had come straight back to him for a little guy-on-guy.
But that train of thought forced Zach to wonder if this signaled the end of their relationship. A girl like Karin probably wouldn't say no if Kellen wanted to have sex again. That meant Kellen didn't need to keep seeing Zach if all he wanted was sex. But it was impossible not to think about the way Kellen responded to anal sex. He obviously loved it or he wouldn't keep offering himself to Zach so eagerly. And then there were his kisses… Zach remembered Kellen's apology and the warm sweet kisses that had followed. When they kissed, it was easy to forget that Kellen was straight. Quite honestly, the kisses were harder to resist than the sex. Although Kellen satisfied him more deeply than any guy he had ever been with, there were nevertheless plenty of guys ready to bend over for Zach when he wanted it. It was Kellen's kiss that was irresistible.
Zach sighed and decided not to think about it. For the time being, Kellen was still his willing lover. Until the day Kellen left him, he would simply enjoy his company and not think about the future.
He arrived at the meet to find only a few people there to watch besides him, most of them parents of the swimmers. The pool was outdoors and had only a tiny set of rickety metal stands for spectators. As soon as Zach took a seat, he caught Kellen's eye. Kellen gave him a faint smile as he tucked his hair underneath his swim cap. Zach refused to let his eyes wander down Kellen's body to his form-fitting Speedos. He was already getting excited and staring at Kellen's cock would not help any. Kellen was in the third race and Zach waited patiently for him to get his turn in the water. He cheered for Kellen's teammates during their races, but it wasn't until Kellen stepped up onto the block that he really focused his attention.
Kellen looked sharp. As he got into his dive stance, bent over with his toes at the edge of the block, his knees slightly bent and his fingers resting lightly beside his feet, the sinuous length of his flexed muscles radiated power. Unconsciously, Zach held his breath waiting for the gun. Then it sounded and Kellen exploded out of his stance, slicing into the water with barely a splash. They were swimming the breast stroke and Kellen's clean, compact sweep cut through the water with no wasted effort. He pulled into the lead before the first turn and by the second turn had widened it to nearly a length. At the third turn, a second swimmer had shortened his lead to half a length, pushing hard to close the gap. Zach leaned forward, shouting encouragement, knowing full well what was coming.
As he kicked out of the third turn, Kellen suddenly turned on the power. He stretched out his stroke, cutting through the water like a dolphin. His form was perfect and he pulled away, hitting the wall a full two lengths ahead of the next swimmer.
Zach jumped to his feet with a shout. “Way to go, Kellen!”
His teammates swarmed to the edge of the pool clapping his shoulders and shouting congratulations.
The other school's coach, who was keeping official time for the meet, had a smile on his face. “That's the best time this season for the men's 100 meter breast stroke in our division.”
Kellen's coach smiled with satisfaction. He gave Kellen a thumb's up before shouting at his guys to get ready for the next race. Kellen climbed out of the pool grinning. He swept the water off of his face and turned to wave at Zach. Zach waved back, a little surprised that Kellen would acknowledge him so openly. But the greeting sent a warm thrill running through him. For just a moment, he indulged himself with the thought that his presence had inspired Kellen to do his best.

Kellen was pleased by his performance, all the more so because Zach witnessed it, and his victory set the pace for the rest of the meet. Although no more records were set, their team won decisively and the coach was pleased. He generously gave them Friday afternoon off from practice.
As they piled into the bus for the return trip, Adam Hastert, their team captain, slapped Kellen on the back. “Good race, Tarrow. I guess sex doesn't weaken the legs that much after all.”
Kellen started. “What?”
Adam leaned close and leered. “I heard you got lucky with Karin Hanson. She's got nice tits.”
Kellen shrugged, feeling relieved. “They're all right, I guess.”
“All right?!” Adam exclaimed. “You like `em bigger? You must have high standards.” He laughed as Kellen sat down and continued down the aisle to a seat farther in the back.
“I bet he likes `em smaller,” George Hall muttered from the seat across from Adam. “Like the size of a guy's tits.”
Kellen's ears were suddenly burning. George hadn't spoken that loudly, but his comment echoed in Kellen's hearing.
Adam replied in a low voice that Kellen nevertheless heard clearly. “You think he's been licking Zach's titties?”
“I don't know about that,” George whispered back, “but I bet Zach's been licking something on him. Everybody knows he's a fag and Kellen's been walking around like the cat that ate the canary for weeks.”
“Yeah…” Adam murmured thoughtfully. “Zach's always hanging around watching us swim, checking us out.”
“No kidding. Maybe he owes us for the free show he's been getting all this time.”
“Maybe…”
They stopped talking. Kellen fought the urge to turn around and glare at them. Until Zach had propositioned him, Kellen had had no idea he was gay. Maybe he had been checking out the jocks in the locker room, but he had done so discretely. Then Kellen bit his lip. If people started to think he was gay, they would start talking about him like this. His cheeks flushed at the thought. Maybe it was time to break it off with Zach.

Zach got a ride from his dad on Friday morning so he could transport the stuff for the food festival. He'd made Swedish meatballs with rice and seven layer dip. The meatballs were in a crock-pot that needed to be plugged in so they could be reheated. He'd made the rice in the rice cooker that morning so it was still warm, but it also needed to be plugged back in. He had told Ernie to buy the chips for the dip and Kirk was supposed to provide paper dishes and utensils. Mr. Tobin, the computer science teacher, whose room they used for their club meetings, had given them permission to store everything in his room. So Zach dropped everything off there before heading to class.
They had a truncated class schedule on food festival days. Classes were shortened to a half-hour each and the day ended at noon, giving the students a couple of free hours to enjoy the festival, although it was fairly common for seniors to ditch the festival and take the afternoon off. But since Zach was helping out at the computer club's booth, situated on one side of the senior quad, there was no ditching for him.
“I think we're gonna sell out,” Ernie remarked as he dished up a serving of meatballs and rice for a waiting student. “People like your cooking.”
Zach nodded. “Can't go wrong with meatballs and rice.”
“The seven layer dip is quite popular too,” Kirk said generously. He made it sound like he hadn't expected it to be. “It's almost gone.”
“I figured,” Zach said. “If we turn a profit, do I get reinstated in the club?” He made the remark facetiously, but Kirk bridled anyway.
“You miss meetings all the time, Zach! You don't act like you want any responsibility.”
“Chill out, Kirk, I'm kidding.” Zach smiled disarmingly at him. “I never wanted to be vice president anyway. That was your idea, remember?”
Kirk frowned. “Well, you've been in the club a long time. Since you're a senior, it seemed like you should be one of the officers.”
“I admit I like being on top,” Zach replied with a grin, “but that doesn't mean I'm reliable.”
Kirk flushed and Ernie snickered. Then Ernie nudged Zach and nodded across the quad. Zach looked up and saw Kellen talking to a girl. “Who's that girl?” Ernie asked innocently.
“I don't know.” Zach purposefully kept his tone casual, even though his heart was suddenly pounding.
Kirk followed their gazes. “What girl?”
Ernie pointed. “The one with Kellen Tarrow.”
“Oh, her. Her name's Lisa-something. She's a total slut. She looks all cute and innocent, but I heard she's slept with half the guys on the football team. She likes jocks.” Kirk's tone had turned faintly malicious and he smirked at Zach.
Zach refused to rise to the bait. “Well, Kellen certainly fits into that category. He's got a body to die for.” He gave Kirk a knowing smile. But his eyes strayed back to Kellen and Lisa and he felt a sharp pang as he watched the two of them walk away together. He busied himself with cleaning up. “It looks like we're sold out. Do you mind helping me carry stuff home, Ernie?”
“No problem.”
They didn't talk much on the way to Zach's house, but when they arrived, Ernie immediately brought up the subject of Kellen.
“So, are you going to keep seeing him now that he's dating girls?”
“What do you mean?”
“You know what I mean!” Ernie snapped. “Straight guys don't mind doing it with fags like us when nothing else is available, but now that he's getting popular with the ladies, what use does he have for you? He can get what you're giving him somewhere else.”
“No he can't,” Zach said flatly.
“Quit fooling yourself!”
“Do you still believe I'm not the one on top, Ernie?” Zach glared at him. “I told you: Kellen is not on top, I am. No matter what else they do, no girl can make him come the way I do when I ram my cock up his ass!”
Ernie stared with his mouth open, dumbfounded. “N… no way! He's not!”
“Believe what you want. It's the truth.” Zach disassembled the rice cooker and filled the tub with soapy water to soak.
Ernie clenched his fists, his pale face turning bright red. “So, what's next? Do you think he's suddenly going to decide he's gay and give up everything for you? He's straight! What do you think he's doing right now? He's fucking that stupid bitch Lisa and not thinking about you at all!”
Zach leaned on the sink and closed his eyes. Ernie's words stabbed through him like daggers. “What do you want me to say?” he sighed. “You're right. You were right all along. I'm in love with him and I'm going to get my heart broken. Is that what you want to hear? Well, it doesn't change how I feel.” He turned around and met Ernie's gaze. “I can't change how I feel. I'm in love with Kellen.”
Suddenly, Ernie's shoulders sagged. “So I don't have a chance anymore, do I?” he said dejectedly. He slumped to the kitchen table and sank down in a chair with his head in his hands. “With a guy like that, what chance does someone like me have?”
Zach stepped over to Ernie and put a comforting hand on his shoulder. “I'm sorry, Ernie. I honestly don't want to lose you as a friend. But I can't have sex with you anymore. Even if…” He paused and swallowed, not wanting to say the words. “Even if Kellen dumps me, I'm not going to screw my friends anymore. Mixing sex and friendship is a mistake.”
Ernie sniffed. He looked up at Zach with tears in his eyes. “Do you mean it? You still want to be friends?”
Zach nodded gravely. “I do.”
Ernie scrubbed a hand across his face, wiping the tears away. “I guess I'd rather stay friends, even if you are in love with someone like Kellen.” He managed a weak laugh. “At least it shows we both lack common sense.”
“Yeah, there's that. Let's go play some video games. We haven't done that for a while.”
“Ok.” Ernie brightened a little bit at the suggestion and he followed Zach into the family room, where the Playstation console was set up. “Say, Zach? I'm sorry I told Kirk about Kellen. He's the one who started the rumors about you two.”
“Don't worry about it. I figured that's what happened. Nothing came of it, so it doesn't matter.” Zach pulled open the drawer containing the games. “What do you want to play?”
-o-o-o-o-o-
Kellen was caught off-guard when Lisa approached him at the food festival and suggested they sneak off to her house for sex. She was even more open about her intentions than Karin.
“I know we talked about maybe hooking up next week,” she said with a suggestive smile, “but why not do it right now? I heard you set a record at the meet yesterday. I always like to reward our athletes when they do something good for the school.” She caught his hand and swung his arm from side to side. “Why don't you come to my house? I'm really horny.”
Kellen did not know how to respond to her blatant proposition except to accept it. Turning down an obvious slut when he didn't have a girlfriend to get jealous would cause talk. So he went home with her and did what she wanted, and even though she left him exhausted and satiated, he felt vaguely dissatisfied. He called Zach while he walked home, anxious to explain himself this time. He didn't want Zach to find out from someone else, like last time. Kellen was not prepared to face that flat, wounded expression on Zach's face.
But Zach didn't answer his phone. Kellen called him three times on his way home and twice more after reaching his house, but Zach never picked up. A sick feeling of apprehension pooled in the pit of Kellen's stomach. He knows and he doesn't want to talk to me! Kellen kicked himself for going home with Lisa. I should have said no and gone to see Zach instead. I would rather have been with him anyway! Kellen sprawled on his bed and stared up at the ceiling.
“What do I want?” he whispered. “Why does it bother me what Zach thinks?” He looked at his phone, still clenched in his right hand. “Do you hate me now, Zach?” He closed his eyes, surprised to feel the sting of tears against his eyelids. “What should I do now?”
