Chapter Fourteen: Valentine's Day

Over the course of the next month, Zade and Ryleigh continued to learn about the couple from the past. They had eventually come to the realization that Preia and Rye were, in fact, their own past lives, which explained why they were seeing different memories and visions of them. They'd also spent the month together, becoming closer and closer every day. Ryleigh could honestly say that what she felt for Zade was true, pure love, but she'd been top nervous to ask how deep his feelings for her were.

Currently, Ryleigh was bustling around in her bedroom, hurrying to get ready for her date with Zade. It was Valentine's Day, the one day of February that Ryleigh had always, before this point, hated greatly. Not anymore. Pausing to glance at her attire in the mirror, a long, slim red dress with a slight bunch at the waist and top, with spaghetti straps holding it up, Ryleigh nodded in approval and hurried to her makeup, cursing herself continuously in her mind for waiting so late.

`I knew watching that stupid movie would put me to sleep… but nooo, I just HAD to watch it, didn't I? Stupid, stupid, STUPID!' Ryleigh dug through her makeup bag, just big enough to hold all of her makeup, but just small enough to make it a hassle to find anything in it. Shouting in triumph when she found and pulled out a tube of light pink lipstick, Ryleigh swiveled the end of the stick and swiped it quickly over her lips, puckering them to smooth out the colour. Applying a shear coat of glitter to her eyelids, Ryleigh nodded once at her appearance in the bathroom mirror then hurried back into bedroom, slipping her black heels on just as a loud knock came from the direction of the front door.

Smiling wildly, the blonde hurried out to the kitchen and, after smoothing out non-existent wrinkles from her gown and making sure her hair was fine, pulled open the door. Ryleigh's smile faltered when her gaze met with Nathaniel's wary gray eyes, startled by how worn out he looked.

“Nathaniel? What's wrong, you look-” Ryleigh's words faltered, not sure if she should comment on her friend's appearance or leave it be.

“Tired? Exhausted? Yeah, I know,” he mumbled, looking at her pleadingly. “I need your help.”

“Of course, come in,” the blonde pulled her friend in by his arm, swiftly closing the door behind him and leading him to the living room, the male slouching onto the couch. Ryleigh sat in the warn arm chair across from him, staring at him silently. It unnerved her greatly to see her normally strong friend so upset.

“Nathaniel, what is it that you need my help with?” she questioned softly after he remained silent for a few minutes, aware that Zade would be there very soon to take her out on their date.

“Kaelyn,” he replied, Ryleigh's eyebrow's creasing in confusion.

“What about her?”

“Everything!” he said it so suddenly and loudly that Ryleigh jumped, surprised when Nathaniel looked up with tears forming in his eyes, “It's everything about her! Her smile, her walk, her laugh, her personality, her scent- it all drives me crazy but… but in a different way then I've ever felt before…” He slumped back again, whispering, “My heart feels like it'll burst if I don't touch her soon… hug her, kiss her, anything! I just don't know what to do… Ryleigh, what do I do?”

“Idiot,” Nathaniel's head snapped up just to be snapped to the side, a red imprint forming on his cheek where her hand had met with his skin just seconds ago. Looking back to her, he shuddered slightly; Ryleigh looked furious.

“Ever considered that maybe it's more then simple lust for once in your life?” she hissed quietly, hands clenching and unclenching by her sides, “Ever considered that just maybe you've fallen in love for once?”

Hearing a knock at the door, Ryleigh turned away from her dazed friend and walked calmly to the door, collecting her coat and purse on the way. Opening the door, Ryleigh smiled sweetly when Zade held out a bouquet of red roses, taking them gently. Stepping back inside to set them on the table, Ryleigh sighed when she noticed that Nathaniel hadn't moved and turned back to her boyfriend, pulling him out the door and closing it behind her. Zade looked down at his girlfriend skeptically.

“What's wrong with…?” Ryleigh held a finger to her lips, hooking her arm through his.

“He's having difficulty figuring out his emotions,” she murmured simply, gently tugging on his arm. Zade raised an eyebrow at her, but moved forward obediently, noticing she didn't want to talk about it. Not long after they'd left, Nathaniel got up and quickly left the apartment, one goal on his mind. There was a certain someone that he needed to talk to desperately.

Ryleigh sighed, resting her head against her boyfriends shoulder as they swayed gently to the music playing; just one of the many couples gathered there that evening. Though at first she'd been afraid her mind would be stuck on Nathaniel's problem, Zade had quickly pushed her worries from her mind and brought her back to where they were currently. The night had started off with them having dinner at a cozy little restaurant just outside the city; it had been quiet and intimate, and the food had been delicious.

After that, they had a taken a short walk on the nearby beach, staying only until they began to feel the cold of the late winter month. And now they were dancing at one of the many clubs in town that had been reserved for couples only and decorated to fit the season.

In Ryleigh's opinion, it couldn't have been any better.

“Ryleigh?” Blinking when she realized Zade had been trying to get her attention for several moments, the blonde flushed, glancing up at her boyfriend shyly.

“Yes?” the red head smiled, leaning down so that their foreheads were touching, his eyes staring deep into hers.

“Ryleigh Owen,” he murmured her full name, eye's half closed, his lips hovering not an inch from hers, “I love you.”

Tears gathered in Ryleigh's eyes at those words, but she smiled happily, leaning up to meet his lips with hers.

“I love you too, Zade Winterbourne,” she whispered against his kiss.

Across town, Kaelyn sat in her apartment's living room, flipping through a book she needed to read for her literature class. She groaned, tossing the book away in boredom, jumping when her front door slammed open and a panting Nathaniel stepped in, looking as though he'd just run a marathon.

“Nathaniel?” she questioned, standing and immediately walking over to him, worried, “What's wrong? Are you ok-?” Kaelyn gasped in surprise when he suddenly grabbed her by the arms and pulled her against him, hugging her tightly. She blinked into his shoulder, cheeks flushing slightly.

“I'm fine now,” he said, attempting to sound as he normally did but failing miserably. “I've gotta say it, and even if you don't know what it means, I have to say it. Tha goal agam ort, Kaelyn, tha goal agam ort.

Relieved to have finally gotten it out, Nathaniel didn't notice the way that Kaelyn had stiffened at those words, nor the way her eyes had widened and now glistened with unshed tears.

“I'm sorry, I didn't mean to disturb you, I'll leave you to your work now…” Letting go of her and stepping back towards the door, Nathaniel blinked, surprised, when he felt Kaelyn grab tightly onto his hand, forcing him to look at her again. He was even more surprised when she leaned up to press a soft kiss on his lips, bringing a hand up to caress his face, smiling.

“I love you, too, Nathaniel.”
