Chapter 1
"Lyssa! Come on! Lyssa you're going to be late!" My dad yelled from the bottom of the stairs. "Alright, alright keep your pants on!" I said as I bounced down the steps. "You worry too much-you're going to go gray prematurely" I informed him. " If I go gray early it'll be because of you-now let's get a move on." I sighed but walked to the front door. "Can I drive?" I asked hopefully. "Do you have your permit?" I scowled at the concrete. He knew I had lost it a week ago. He chuckled as he unlocked the car. I threw my backpack to the floor and hopped in. "Remember that Jess is picking me up after school and driving me to work-so you have to pick me up at ten o-clock. Okay?" "I remember but thank you for reminding me." He replied smiling. I smiled back.
We reached my school fifteen minutes later. I grabbed my backpack and hopped out of the Prius hybrid. "Thanks Dad. Have a good day at work" "Thanks hon., you too." I shut the door and started walking up the front yard. "Sup Lyssa?" My best friend Jessica Hamilton called. She came up and started walking next to me. Jess was best described as pretty. She had straight brown hair that reached past her shoulders. Today she wore it down with small braids going down the sides. She had on light blue jeans with a slit in the left knee. Her silver backpack and hoop earrings shone in the sun. Her top was a black spaghetti strap tea-shirt. Jess was slim but not skinny. Her baby blue eyes sparkled as she looked at me. "Nothing" I replied.
"Guess what? A newbie is coming today-he moved in across the street from me-and he's so hot!" "Hey girls!" Cried my other best friend Dylan. He had smoky black hair that covered his eyes. His hair was as curly as you can get. It puffs out like an afro. He has coffee brown eyes and a huge smile. He had to run to catch up with us. "Hey Dyl" I said. "Hey" Jess greeted him. "Hi. What are you talking about?"he asked. "A newbie's coming to school today" Jess informed him. "Cool" he said. "He's a Jr. but he looks like a Sr." Jess commented."Good cuz I think if this school had another girl the boys would murder themselves."Dyl said. Jess and I laughed. There was only 10 boys in our school, including Dylan.
By this time we had reached the front steps. "Lyssa my parents are leaving this weekend so I'm stuck watching Conner, do you think you would like to come over and keep me company?" Jess invited. Conner was Jessica's little brother. He was 13. "Yeah that'd be cool" I responded. "Dyl you can come too. I think I'm goanna rent some movies and buy some popcorn." She explained. "Sounds good-wait when?"he asked. "Today. My mom's leaving at nine, so any time after that. Hey Lyssa maybe you could spend the night." I smiled. "Yeah that'd be cool-I'll have to ask Dad though.
We were at our lockers now-Jessica's was next to mine. "Alright I'll be at your house at nine thirty okay?" Dylan said as he walked by. His locker was at the end of the hall. "Cool" Jess called back. I did my combination lock and threw my backpack in. Then I grabbed my Algebra book. "Math!" Jessica groaned. I laughed at her. "Look at the bright side, maybe you'll get to sit next to the newbie." That perked her up. "Yeah, really Lyssa he's absolutely gorgeous!" Jess giggled. I slammed my locker shut. "What are we waiting for let's go." Jessica skipped to algebra.
When we walked into algebra the desks were rearranged into groups of four. Jess and I groaned. "Partners" mumbled Dylan as he walked over next to us. I looked at him. He had just as big a scowl on his face as the rest of us. To me that was shocking-he was in love with math. The bell rang. All eight students stood against the wall waiting to be pointed to their seats.
There were 30 students in the entire school and it ranged from grades six to twelve. I guess that was because we lived in a dinky country town. Our teacher then walked into the classroom. "Good morning class. As you have guessed we're changing seats. So listen closely because I'm not going to repeat myself. Here-" he pointed to a table "is where Riley, Amanda, Chris, and Max will sit. And there-" he pointed to another group of desks-"will be Jess, Lyssa, Kevin, and Tiffany. He smiled. "Now in these groups there will be pairs of two's who will work together. Those will be Riley and Chris, Amanda and Max, Jess and Kevin-" He was interrupted by the door opining. A tall boy stepped in. He wore dark blue jeans and a black button up dress shirt. He had bright blue eyes and wavy, dark, brown hair. He was tan and he had black tennis shoes on. Through his shirt you could see the tight muscles in his arms and you could see his six-pack. He stunned us all with his beauty. We all were staring at him wide eyed, some even had their mouths open. Mr. Barnett even had his mouth open, eyes nearly bulging out of his head.
I looked at the obvious newbie. His eyes met mine and I had a weird sensation-like I was supposed to remember something or like I was forgetting something. Mr. Barnett had composed himself by then and he cleared his throat as I stared at the newbie in confusion. Jess nudged me with her elbow. "Told you" She whispered. "Welcome to Creek wood high school." Mr. Barnett greeted.
"Thank you. This is Mr. Barnett's algebra class correct?" "Yes, Yes. You must be a new student. Just in time too, we were just changing seats today. What's your name?" Mr. Barnett asked. "Zachariah" I answered. Wait. How did I know that? Why was the newbie staring at me with as much confusion on his face as I felt. Mr. Barnett also stared at me. I looked around. Everybody was staring at me. I blushed and looked at the floor. Mr. Barnett cleared his throat again. "Um, well, is that your name?" he asked. He was clearly uncomfortable with the situation. "Yes sir it is." Zachariah answered. I looked up. He was smiling at me, his perfectly white teeth flashing. I ducked my head again. Jess nudged me. I looked at her. She stared at me, disbelief covered her face. I took a deep breath.
"Okay, well I should get ya'll seated. Group changes. We'll have to break up into groups of two people per team. So when I give you your team put your desks together. Amanda and Kevin, Riley and Max, Tiffany and Dylan, Chris and Jess, Lyssa and Zack. Um Zack? Do you mind if I call you Zack?" Mr. Barnett asked. My head had shot up when I had heard his name. My eyes flashed to him and I froze. His eyes found mine and I had that strange feeling again. What am I forgetting? I asked myself. My face twisted in confusion. "You may sir" Zack gave his permission.
Jess tugged on my arm. "Lyssa!" she hissed. I unfroze and stared at her. "You know him?! Why didn't you tell me? WE ARE SO TALKING ON THE WAY TO WORK!!!"Then we got our desks set up.
I avoided his eyes the rest of the class. I didn't even look up from my paper. I knew people were staring at me. Jess wrote me a note five minutes before the end of class. It read:
You have ALOT of explaining
to do! Why won't you look up? Who is he?
How in the HELL do you know him? Why do you
freeze and look funny every time he looks at you?
I just gave the note back to her and whispered 'later' to her. She must have not liked that idea because she rolled her eyes. Finally the bell rung. I sprang up from my desk. I grabbed Jess's arm and yanked her out the door. We went to our lockers and grabbed our history things. "Okay what was that?" Jess asked. "Sorry, I had to get out of there. I hate it when people stare at me." "Is it later yet?" She asked me. "I swear I'll tell you everything I know on the way to work." "Pinkie?" Pinkie was a promise that held the most high swear. "Pinkie" I swore.
"Let's get to history then." Jess smiled. History was our favorite subject. When we got in the classroom we went straight to the back row, our usual seats, and sat down. I waited all period, staring at the door, hoping Zack comes in and hoping that he doesn't. Finally when the bell rang I realized that I didn't have that class with him. I went to my locker in a daze. I got my books and went to business. Still in a daze I took my seat next to Dylan. This was the only class I didn't have with Jessica. "You look like a zombie. Are you okay?" Dylan asked me. "Yeah, um, I'm fine." I think. I added mentally. Then Zack walked in. I smiled slightly as I came out of my daze. "Oh. You like him" Dylan commented. "Dyl I don't like him, at least not like like him, he just looks like a cool guy. That's all." "You are drooling over him Lyssa." "Oh shut up." I snapped. Dylan didn't push the subject any further. Zack sat in the seat in front of me. Dylan sighed and looked at Mrs. Nark for directions.
I spent the rest of the day in a daze, I do remember that Zack is in all my classes except history. When the bell rang I suddenly was aware of everything. I was aware that Jess and I had a very long talk on the way to work.
"Okay let's go" Jess said as she slammed her locker shut. Our dinky town didn't have a pizza shop, so we had to go 70 miles, into civilization, to go to work. And today I wasn't looking forward to the time. We were walking on the front lawn when Dylan called us. "Wait up!" He cried. We both turned around. "We need to talk. Lyssa, what was up with you today? I mean the newbie's been watching you all day-I don't think he even took his eyes off you! And how you said his name first period-how every time you look at him your face twists up in a knot. What's going on?!" I just shrugged my shoulders at him.
"You know what I think? I think our Ms. Lyssa and Mr. Newbie like each other." Jess suggested. "No way! I do NOT like Zack in that way!" I defended myself. "Oh we're on a first name basis now?" Jess asked. I groaned at her. "Look, whatever, I got to go." Dylan dismissed himself. He walked away. "What's wrong with him?" I asked concerned. "Jealousy" she answered. "What are you babbling about now?" I asked, confused. Jessica sighed deeply. "You are so blind. DUH! Dyl's liked you forever! He's always had a crush on you. He's not asking you out because he's afraid that you'll laugh at him. And now, this thing with the newbie...." she trailed off. Dylan likes me? I thought about that for a moment. Then I dismissed the idea. Dyl's only my friend, Jess's wrong.
We had reached Jessica's red truck by then. She unlocked it and we hopped in. "Okay! We're in the truck. How did you know his name? Why do you freeze up when you look at him? Why won't he stop staring at you? How do you know him? Where did you two meet? What the HELL is going on?!" She had to take a breath of air. She was very excited. "Drive" I commanded her. She rolled her eyes and pulled out of the parking lot.
I sighed then started. "We didn't meet before first period-" "Then how did you know his name?" She cut me off. "I'm not really sure, I just looked into his eyes and the words came out of my mouth. It was like his eyes sent mine a message and I said it." "Weird" she commented. "okay why do you freeze and why does your face twist up when you look at him?" "It's not when I look at him it's only when our eyes meet. And I feel like I'm forgetting something or I need to remember something- a secret maybe and his eyes/he knows what that secret is but he won't tell me." "Wow" She said. "Well you know it's not like it's only you" She thought aloud. "What do you mean?" I asked her. "HELLO! EARTH TO LYSSA! HE COULDN'T TAKE HIS EYES OFF OF YOU!! EVEN IN THE HALLWAY HE STARED AT YOU." She half-yelled at me. I was stunned. I didn't have anything else to say and she didn't appear to have anything else to ask. So we sat in silence the rest of the way.
We finally reached Pizza Palace and I bounced out. "Thanks for the ride Jess" She just nodded, too deep in thought to answer. I shut the door and went inside. "Hey Girlie!" Frank called from behind the counter. The inside of Pizza Palace looked like the inside of a Waffle House. The floor had white and red tiles on the floor. Booth's lined the 3 walls. The fourth wall was a counter that served as a bar. There was a jukebox in one comer that plays 80's music. Tables where in the middle of the room. The walls were white with pictures of cars and movies in the walls. By the door there was a bubblegum machine. Above the counter there was a clock. "Sup Frankie?" I called back.
Frank was a 6 foot 2, 400 pound clown. He is my employer and the owner to the restaurant. Frank was always cracking jokes and making me laugh. Frank has fire red hair and sparkling green eyes, and a smile that filled his face. Frank is like a second father to me. On top of all that he makes a mean pizza. Frank watches out for me, and he makes me feel better when I am down. Frank and my dad have been friends since my dad and Frank had the same third grade class together. So I grew up with Frank always coming around and hanging out. And when I needed a job Frank was more than happy to give me a job at the Palace. I climbed the counter and threw my purse and backpack in the corner. Then I grabbed my pen and pad of paper.
"Hi Alyssa!" Christina/Crissy/Blondie called. Crissy was the only person that called me by my full name. Crissy worked at the Palace too. and she was Frank's daughter. Crissy was like a sister to me, I've known her since she was born. I'm even her legal godmother. I smiled at the piggy tailed girl. Crissy had bright blond hair. Her hair was so blond it was almost white. It reached her mid back but she always kept it in piggy tails. She had Franks sparkling green eyes. "Hey Blondie." I used my nickname for her. My dad and I always call her Blondie because she is as blond as you can get-her attitude is just as blond as her hair. Blondie is only 9 years old, but since her dad owns the Palace she's allowed to work here. She ran up and hugged me. I petted the top of her head. "We gots us a party 'tday" She told me, her country accent thick. I smiled at her. "When?" "It'd be six o-clock sis." She smiled back at me. I looked at the clock, it was only 3:30. "Kay" I said. We waited on people as normal. Everything was going good until about five o-clock. That's when Zack walked in. I looked at Crissy "Hey Blondie can you get that table?" I pointed to the table that Zack sat at. "I'll go wipe off the other two tables." "Sure" She said and got to work.
I was wiping off a table when a group of four boys walked in. I grabbed my rag and went to the counter. Blondie joined me as frank came over from the kitchen. Loud laughter filled our ears. "City boys" Frank snarled. "That usually means trouble."Da I'll take em on." Crissy volunteered. "Na, I gottem." I said then I looked at Frank. He winked but didn't smile. He knew I didn't put up with crap and that I could take care of myself. Last year we had a bunch of drunks and I made them leave. But before they left one had a bleeding lip, one was dripping with soda, one was limping, and the last had a swollen eye. I did that to them after they threatened me and refused to keep their voices down. Crissy might not be able to handle them. I leaned over the counter and grabbed four menu's. "Thanks" Frank whispered. "Anytime" I said
I walked over to the table. "Hey boys. Welcome to Pizza Palace. May I take your orders?" I set the menu's in front of each kid. "You can take anything you want sweetie." A dark brown haired boy said. He looked to be the leader. "Watch it Jack I think this is the girl who beat up the Roland's last year."That was a blond haired boy. "So you heard about me. Good. Then you know I don't put up with crap." I told them. "I got it Little man." The boy named Jack said. Than Jack looked at me. "Yeah I'll take a couple of breasts." He said pointing to my chest.
"Cute" I said with a false smile on my face. "Would you like a knuckle salad with that?" I asked. The other three boys 'oooed' my remark. "She dissed you Jack" one said. I felt a firm hand on my shoulder. "Is there a problem here men?" A husky voice said. I turned my head. There stood Zack. I smiled at him then looked back at Jack. "Is there?" I asked. "Just playin round, ya know?" Jack replied. "Yeah? Well do it somewhere else." Zack said coldly. "That a threat?" Jack asked standing up. "Yes, it is." replied Zack. "Yeah and what are you gonna do about it if we don't?" Jack challenged. "I'll make you." Zack told him darkly. "You ain't gonna make me do nothin." Jack said confident. Then Jack pushed Zack. Zack stumbled backwards but then he got in about an inch from Jacks face.
"Don't you ever push me, human" Zack practically growled. Jack laughed in his face. "If you call me a human then what are you? A dog perhaps?" Zack punched him square in the mouth. Jack fell back, onto his seat. Blood came from his lips. With a hand he touched his lips and looked at his hand. The tips of his fingers were covered in blood. "Let's go" Jack said darkly. He stood back up and shoved past Zack. The other boys followed but they didn't touch Zack, in fact they gave him a berth of space. I took a long look at their faces. They were actually scared of Zack! I thought about that for a moment.
"Lyssa," Frank called. I walked over to the counter. "What happened?" "Zack punched one of the kids because the kid was being dirty. I guess they left because they didn't want a fight." I informed him. "Hmm" Was his reply. He shook his head. "Tell this Zack kid that he can come have a free pizza on me anytime." I smiled. "Kay" I turned around, but Zack was gone. I went over to his table, there was a twenty on it. I picked it up. Crissy stood next to me. "He left a twenty?" She asked, astonished. "Yeah" "But all he ordered was a coke." she said. "Weird" I replied.
The rest of work went smoothly. We had a party of 8, so I was busy but nothing bad happened. At 10:00 I put my pen and pad away. I climbed the counter and grabbed my purse and backpack. "Goodnight Frankie, thanks" I called. "Thank YOU Lyssa. And good night."Frank replied. "Bye Alyssa. See ya t'morrow." I smiled. "By Christina Marie Keller" I said as I walked out the front door. I heard her giggle and Frank chuckle. I was the only person who called her Christina.
My dad's car was right outside the door. I hopped in. "How was work honey?" Dad asked. "We had a couple of troublemakers but other than that it was perfect." My dad frowned. "Are you okay? Did you get into a fight?" He asked worriedly. "Yes. No." I answered. "Good. Good." "Hey Jess's babysitting tonight, can I stay the night at her house? She said she needed some company." "That's fine. Are we still going home first?"he asked. "Yeah." I grabbed my purse and dug around in it until I found my cell.
I dialed Jess's number. "Hello?" Jess answered the phone. "Hey Jess it's me. My dad said 'yeah' so I'm going home to get a change of clothes then I'll be over." "Okay Dylan's already here. But we'll wait for you." "Thanks Jess" I said. "You don't have to thank me as long as you get your butt over here." I laughed. "See you soon. Bye." "Bye Lyssa" Then the line went dead.
We reached the house and I ran into my room. I threw my book bag against a wall and grabbed my duffel bag. I grabbed some clothes out of my dour and threw them in the bag. Then I raced to the bathroom and grabbed my toothbrush and toothpaste. I zipped up my bag and ran downstairs. "Ready" I called. "See, now why can't she get ready this fast in the morning" My dad mumbled mostly to himself. "Because I'm actually awake and showered and dressed." I answered him. He mumbled something incoherent then he said, "Let's go" The drive there was long and silent. But the silence was a comfortable one.
We got to Jess's house and I hopped out. "Thanks Daddy" I said. "Lyssa...Alyssa there's something I need-" "Hey Lyssa!" Jess called from her doorway. "Hey Jess. Be there in a minute." "Kay" she called. Then Jess shut the door. "What do you need dad?"I asked. "Never mind. Have fun honey." I smiled "Okay. You too." I shut the door and ran up to the house. Jess opened the door for me. "What was that all about?" "I actually don't know. It was weird." I walked into her living room. "Hey Lyssa" Conner greeted me. Conner had blond hair and blue eyes. He also was 13 and had a crush on me. "Hey Con" I greeted back. "Hey Lyssa" Dylan called. Dylan was sitting on the couch and Conner was on the floor with five pillows and three blankets. I dropped my bag by the entrance and plopped down on the couch, next to Dylan.
"Kay. We'll take a vote. Your movie choices are Room 1408, The Ring, or Scary Movie 3." Jess announced. "Okay those who vote for Scary Movie 3 speak now or forever hold your peace." "Yeah" Conner voted. "Ring?" Jess asked. "Yeah." Dylan voted. "Ring" I agreed nodding. "I change my mind," Conner said. " I choose The Ring." Jess rolled her eyes. "You only changed because Lyssa picked Ring." Jess accused. "Did NOT!" Conner whined. I decided that it was time to interject. "It doesn't matter the reason WHY he changed, it only matters that he DID. So three votes going for The Ring. What's your vote Jess?" I asked politely.
"Oh it doesn't matter ya'll outvote me anyway." She said. She popped in the movie and sat down next to me. The movie didn't end until one thirty in the morning. "Crap" Dylan said when he saw the time. "My mom's gonna skin me alive." "Use Jess's phone and explain what happened. Maybe your mom will let you spend the night here, It's too late to drive." I suggested. "Yeah you can bunk with Conner" Jess said. "Okay" he muttered. Then he went to the kitchen to go get the phone.
"You know," Jess told me "Conner hates The Ring it scares the crap out of him, but he picked it because you did." I sighed. "I figured but I didn't want you two to fight about it. Plus he didn't need the embarrassment." Just then Dylan walked back in. "Ma said it was okay." "Conn's asleep so he'll have to sleep down here. Dyl you can take Conn's room and Lyssa will sleep with me in my room. Kay?" We both agreed. We dragged ourselves upstairs and I went to Jess's room, with Jess right behind me. We both dumped ourselves on her bed and fell asleep.
"Lyssa! "Can I drive?" "Dyl I don't like him, at least not like like him, he just looks like a cool guy.
