Chapter 2
I awoke to voices. "She'll be pissed when she finds out." "I know but she needs the sleep" I identified the first voice as Dylan and the second as Jessica. Who
were they talking about? I forced my heavy eyelids open.
I was still in Jess's room and Dyl and Jess were standing in the doorway. I looked at them. I sat up on my elbows. "Who- What are you talking about?" I asked. I sounded disoriented. Jess came to my side. "Um, well, I called Frank and said that you would be talking the day off so you could sleep." She informed me. "YOU DID WHAT!?!" I screamed at her. "What time is it?" I asked as I jumped out of bed. "It's ten am." Dylan spoke. "Shit! Why didn't you wake me?" I half-ran out of the room and down the stairs.
I grabbed my bag and rushed into the bathroom. I quickly changed, ran a brush through my hair, and brushed my teeth. I quickly threw all my things back into my bag and walked out. "JESSICA AMANDA TERRY! YOU ARE IN SO MUCH TROUBLE! And why didn't you stop her DYLAN! Never mind. Can you please drive me to work? Please?" "Yeah I'll drive you." Dylan promised.
I walked out the front door, my bag still on my shoulder. Dylan was right behind me. He unlocked his SUV and I jumped in. I grabbed my cell out of my bag. I dialed fast. "Hello this is Pizza Palace, Frank speaking. How may I help you?" "Well you could never let me take a day off, I would like that. And you could let me work late to make up for me being late. How about that?" I heard a deep sigh. "Lyssa you don't need to come in today, get some sleep. We'll be fine without you. Seriously."
"I'm not tired Frank. Besides it's Saturday, our busiest day so I'm on my way." I heard another deep sigh. "Is there anything ANYTHING that I could say to make you take the day off?" "Nope" I said happily. "Alright then, I lied, we do need you, Crissy's going crazy." " Of course you need me." I said still giddily. "Stubborn as her mother" he mumbled. "Thank you. See you soon Frank, bye." "Bye Girly" I hung up.
We pulled up to the Pizza Palace and cars were like swarming bees. Dylan had to drop me off at the front door. "Thanks Dyllie. I really appreciate it." I shut the door. I couldn't even get through the front door because there were too many people. So I had to go around the back. The outside patio was also full of people. Every chair, bench and table was occupied.
I snuck in through the kitchen door. I set my bag in the corner. "Memo!" I cried. "Hey honey, we really need your help." Memo told me. Memo was Frank's wife and Crissy's mother. Memo had the same color hair as Crissy but Memo's hair was curly and bouncy and Crissy's was straight. Memo had baby blue eyes that somehow always looked soft. Memo was like the mother I never had. She was sweet and kind and nice. She was an amazing person.
"I can see that. What's going on?" "Parties" was her simple answer. "I'm helping cook. Jeff is also cooking, oh and Tom too. Crissy, Lydia, and Max are waiting on people. But they need help seating people and taking orders. Thanks" Memo said as she walked off. I grabbed my paper and pen and hopped over the counter. There were three tables dirty and the bar needed tending. So I did that. Then I went to the door and looked at the list of people waiting to be seated. First were the Pedersen's party of seven. I went and put the two tables together. Then I went to the mike. "Pedersen's party of seven, Pedersen's your table's ready." A group of people walked up to me. "We're the Pedersen's" A women in the group said. "Okay. If you'll please follow me I'll show you to your seats." I said politely. I grabbed menu's and led them to the table's. "Here are your menu's what can I get you to drink?"
I wrote that down and got their drinks. I handed them out and cleaned off another table. I went back to the list and marked off Pedersen's. Next was the Hallowell's...
It was busy like that all day. Finally ten o-clock came. And that meant closing time. Frank had dismissed most of the workers by seven, he had even dismissed me, but I stayed. Frank, Memo, and Crissy all sat at a table with me. "Lyssa honey we are so grateful for you, you are awesome."Memo praised me. "Yeah you picked up the slack beautifully. And a lot of the customers personally asked for me to tell me what a good job you were doing." Frank informed me.
"Then I'm doing my job. I love it here. And I'm glad people like me." "Sweetling-" Frank used his special nickname he saved for me and Crissy only."You are the best employee I have ever had. You always have a smile on your face, you never miss a day of work, you are devoted, you have things together, the customers love you, you never complain or ask for anything in return, and you still manage to have a life. I don't know how you do it but I thank you from the bottom of my heart." Frank freely praised me.
"Sweetie you are like a second daughter to me. If there's anything, ANYTHING that you ever need, come to us and we'll help you."Memo promised. "And-," Frank added "you are the new manager of the Pizza Palace." My eyes bugged out of my head. "NO WAY!! I don't deserve it! There are so many other people who would be better than me. I-" "Sweetling you deserve this, you do! There is nobody who would be a better candidate then you. I swear." Frank said.
Tears were welling up in my eyes. "Oh my. Thank you so much Frank. I'll try my hardest, I swear." " I know you will" Frank said. Crissy came up to me and hugged me as tears streamed down my face.
"We love you Alyssa" Crissy said.
