Chapter 2

The school bell rang, its irritating screeched far past the boundary of the school yard. All the students began pouring in, for in just 5 minutes, they would be late for school, and they would be given detention. Jane and her two siblings, made it just in time to get there books and get into class. In reality they could have been extremely early, but they arrive late to but on a guise that they were normal human beings. They all split up, going to their locker, Kiara complaining that she hated her locker that was on the second floor, and her first class was in the basement levels of the school, where the locker room was. Jane opened hers, got her math book, and when she closed the locker, her friend, Jamie was standing beside her. Jane jumped, startled by her friends action, though she did it almost everyday.

“Don’t do that!” yelled Jane, “Do you want to give me a heart attack?”.

“Of course not! You’re my best friend. Its not my fault you can’t sense my presence” laughed Jamie, who began to walk beside Jane who began to leave her.

“That’s because you shielded my senses from you, you’re not suppose to do magic at school, or at least at me” complained Jane who was waving at her “friends”, while ignoring the outcasts.

“ I know. But I’m not in a Coven, so no one can really tell me what to do” laughed Jamie, Jane scolded her at her loud dialogue, afraid people would here them talking about magic.

“Your mother could” affirmed Jane, with Jamie just giggling, “ I know, she is still trying to send me to Austin, Texas in order to go through the trials. She said she’s sending me there during break.” complained Jamie.

“What?! You won’t be here to chill with me?” asked Jane in disbelief.

Jamie simply nodded, “But at least you will have lover boy to keep you company”.

Jane simply burst into laughter, “ I know, but he can’t even come inside like you can, and my dad won’t let me go to his house”. They continued their conversation into the classroom, where it all but stopped. The day went down like usual, and soon enough the bell for release was rang. All the students ran to their buses or other modes of transportation. Kiara and Marcus went straight home, hungry for more food. Jane and Jamie, went to the mall, to shop and mind fuck people with crazy shenanigans. It was starting to get dark when they left, satisfied with the shopping and fun with their other friends who arrived an hour later. They were enjoying casual conversation, whilst walking Jamie to her house, which was a block away.

“ You know, it might be good for you to join a coven, don’t you get the collective power as well as your own?” asked Jane intrigued. Jamie nodded, but said she didn’t want someone over her, and stronger than her. Suddenly, an ill feeling over took Jane, her body felt weak, she felt nausea, and a deep throbbing pain in her chest.

“Jane what’s wrong?” asked Jamie, who quickly ran to support her friend in her arms, gentling setting her down.

She gagged, “ I don’t know, this has never happened before. I need to find my dad” said Jane, struggling to stand up. Jamie froze, she sensed a dark presence, approaching them, quickly. Something was wrong, how could this be happening. They were confused when Jane finally regained her body from the sudden sickness. The presence was near now, with them in the back streets of the city. They saw but a dark figure, concealed by the shadows of the night. It stepped closer and revealed itself.

“Hello girls, where is your father vampire child?” said the man. He was tall, slim, with blue eyes and soft flowing black hair, and he was pale, looking like a media based vampire. Jane and Jamie knew he was one though, but couldn’t understand why he was here, and why he was looking for Jane’s dad.

“Who are you?” replied Jane, not trying to give the creep any information. He replied that his name was Carter, the leader of the Durden Clan. He asked once more where her father was, she didn’t reply. She wondered if she could take him, she knew there was older vampires, but he didn’t give off the aura of an older one. Plus she had Jamie, I witch, powerful enough to subdue her mother. Jane bared her fangs, they extended out of her mouth, her eyes burning bright yellow in her rage. Carter too extended his fangs, his eyes also burning a bright yellow now.

“I think we should run” said Jamie, before Jane ran full speed at the new vampire, her movement a blur. He easily tossed her aside into a dumpster, and she ran at him again, but he still countered her punches and slashes with amazing speed before pinning her into the wall. He extended his clawed nails, sharpening them in order to rip out her bleeding heart. As he prepared the blow, an overwhelming pain hit his brain. He could barely hold in the screams he wish to shout so badly. He knew of this pain, the work of a witch that was extending her will over a Dark race. He looked at her friend, Jamie, who was simply looking at him, sweat beading down her forehead. He growled in anger as he lunged at her, only to be thrown into the wall, causing it to splinter. In front of Jamie, stood Ronald and Samantha, ready to crush the vampire that threatened the life of their daughter and her friend.

Carter looked in dismay, he knew he couldn’t take on three vamps and a witch. He smirked, “Catch you later” and he blurred away, Ronald stopping his wife from chasing after him. They ran over to their daughter, who was hurt but not wounded.

“Jamie I suggest you go home to your mother” said Ronald as she ran the rest of the way home, Ronald picked up his daughter, and quickly ran her back to their home. Once there they decided to have a family meeting to discuss the night’s events. The family was all uneasy, with the vampire attack.

“This is the first vampire conflict in almost 500 years, this is a very delicate situation” said Ronald.

“What was that feeling that happened before the guy attacked me?” asked Jane, still in the dark about that sensation.

“ When I got our claim from the High Council, they advised me to get a witch to create a barrier that would detect any Dark Race entering, that was the alarm. All of us felt the presence of the intruder, even the witch that created the barrier. This way we can detect the intruder and their general location.” he caught his breath, before continuing. “ Now, I have to go to the High Council, and report this invasion of territory of a rogue clan. They will send their warriors to help us dispatch the enemy” said Ronald.

“Why don’t we just do this ourselves? Why do we have to inform them?” asked Kiara, who didn’t see why they had to request help from the bougie old vampires.

“ It is the law that was set thousands of years ago. I, as the Clan Master, must abide by it and report any attacks by other clans or other races. That is the way it is, and always will be.” explained her father sternly. He began packing immediately for the long journey to the Rocky mountains, the home of a large underground base which held the eldest vampires of North America, including the Original of the north. He would have to abandon his family in order to get the help he needs, but he was confident with his witch allies that they would help the family, even though the man named Carter was maybe 500 years old, a 200 year difference to him. He knew it was essential to the continuing livelihood of his Clan.

“Your friend Jamie, her Grandmother erected the barrier, her family will help ya’ll defend yourselves, and I expect you to do the same” said Ronald hugging his two children. Samantha held back a tear, for she knew life wouldn’t be the same, and her husband might not even make it to the Council. She knew she would have to defend her children and territory while he was away.
