After a few hours, the sun goes down, leaving her room dark. Sirius had forgotten to light a lamp. She woke up about an hour after midnight and she sighed. The ship was quiet other than the frequent sound of waves crashing into the sides and the creaking of woods as it moved a bit. The only other sound was that of two men talking just above her room, where the wheel was located. She slowly gets up and grabs one of her coats before going up to the wheel to see what was going on.
"It's out of the question," Ben says to Sirius, "She may be first mate, but she made a bad judgment call that cost a man his life. Just because you ask me to, doesn't mean I'll change my mind."
"Everyone makes mistakes captain. It's no reason to have her put in the brig. Besides, these men know the Danger they face, and most seem to respect her. I don't think that very many of them will agree with your decision," Sirius replies.
Arianna stopped where she was and felt her heart sink, she was being tossed to the brig to be treated as a prisoner. She looks down at the floor and slowly slinks back into the shadows, taking her pistol out and just staring at the barrel of the gun.
I screwed up...
"The safety of my men was put in her hands. She is responsible for them," Ben states.
"No she's not. You are the captain. as captain, it is your responsibility, not hers, first mate or not. Besides, it's not like she had any control over where the enemy was going to fire their guns. The man who died was just in the wrong place at the wrong time," Sirius counters.
Ben was quiet for a time before answering.
"Because she has done so well for, I will let this slide, but it will take some time before she has my full trust again," he says.
"Fair enough," Sirius says.
Eventually, she just sat down because of the pain in her side and she couldn't breath. Sirius bids Ben a good night before going toward her room. Arianna saw him go by and she tried to get his attention, unable to speak, she threw something at him to get his attention. When it hit him, he looks around to see what it was. When he saw her sitting there, he runs over to her.
"Arianna, what are you doing here!?" he nearly shouts.
"I wanted to talk to Ben," she murmurs, "But... I heard what you two were saying... maybe I should just let him leave me at the next port..."
"That's not going to happen. Now lets go. You need to be in bed," Sirius says, lifting her up.
"But the brig? Sirius... this is the first time I've made a bad judgment call..."
"All the more reason you should be given another chance. First mistakes always happen."
"Why is he being so mean about it though?"
"He thinks it's because I'm here..."
"It's not! Honestly... I'm thinking it's because I'm so close to home... I'm defensive..."
Sirius smiles at her as he lays he back into her bed.
"It doesn't matter. Everything will be alright. Now go to sleep," he says.
"I'm not tired anymore," she says.
"Well, this won't heal if you are moving around."
"I don't like being stuck in bed..."
"Well, I'm not letting you up. You need to relax."
"Fine," she grumbled.
Sirius smiles at her and wipes some hair from her face.
"I hate this," she repeats.
"I know, I know."
"Can you stay in here with me?"
"Of course I can."
"Thank you," she says, moving over and motioning for him to lay by her.
Sirius lays in the bed next to her and smiles. She rests her head in his chest and sighs.
"What was he saying?" she asks.
"He was just saying that he was disappointed that you acted so recklessly.”
"So he was going to throw me in the brig? Why?"
"He was mad I guess..."
"It's just one man... and the first time..."
"I don't know what's going on in his head."
She sighs and snuggles up to him. Sirius gently wraps his arms around her, holding her tenderly to him.
"I love you," she says.
"I love you too," he replies.
She snuggled closer to him, loving the warmth.
"So, what would you like to talk about?"
"Well... have you or anyone else found any leads on theMaiden?" Sirius asks.
"Now we're hearing that it's in the Caribbean."
"So far away?"
"Yeah, I'm sorry," she says.
"It's not your fault..."
"I know... but it's been a year..."
"I will get my ship back."
"Yes, you will... and I'll help."
"Thank you."
"I told you before you left that I would."
"I believed you, I just wanted to be away from you then..."
"Why though? I don't get it... why did you want to be away from me?"
"I don't really know... I just felt like you were changing everything, and I didn't like it."
"Changing? Changing how?"
"Changing... like you were forcing me to live my life differently."
"It's not like I was holding a gun to your head..."
"I know that. It was just how I was feeling..."
"Well... that's odd... I mean, how was I doing that?"
"I don't know...if I knew I would have tried to stop it."
She smiled slightly before lightly kissing his cheek.
"It wasn't a bad change I hope."
Sirius smiles at her.
"No, it wasn't," he replies.
"Good... cause when I'm better, I am so going to jump you."
Sirius chuckles and kisses her.
"If only you were better now," he says.
She blushed and smiled at him. Sirius gives her a quick kiss and chuckles. She kissed him back before relaxing agian.
"Try to get some sleep. I'm not going anywhere."
"Okay," she said softly before falling asleep.
Sirius falls asleep soon after, not realizing how tired he was. The next morning, Arianna woke up feeling refreshed and content with Sirius by her. Sirius was asleep with an arm around her. She smiled and watched him as he slept, wondering how someone like him could look so peaceful. His breathing was even and his face was at peace. She gently ran a finger across his bottom lip and smiled again. Sirius reacted to her touch, but didn't wake up. She relaxed and traced his scar. As she did, he suddenly grabs her wrist and his eyes open, looking at her with a frantic expression. When his eyes focused, he loosened his grip and rests his head on the pillow.
"I'm sorry... reflexes..." he says.
"No, it's fine," she said with a small smile before kissing him.
Sirius returns the kiss and rests a hand on her cheek.
"Are you okay?" she asked.
"I'm alright. I'm more worried about you. How is the wound?" he asks.
"Hurts a little, but that's about it. Sirius... you know what I never got? What is my role in all this?"
"What do you mean... your role?"
"Why was I brought into this?"
"Remember? My men took you aboard my ship... and you had the locket."
"Is that it though? Was that all I was meant for?"
"You made swords for me... I'm grateful."
"What that it?"
She looked down.
"Back then... yes... but now, you mean more to me than anything. But there is one thing I still want."
"And that's your ship... right?"
"No, that treasure."
"It's out of the question," Ben says to Sirius, "She may be first mate, but she made a bad judgment call that cost a man his life. Just because you ask me to, doesn't mean I'll change my mind."
