“Isn't it lovely?” Lance asked, and his eyes were glassy gold. Bryan edged away from the Dragon Master, finally realizing that it had been a very bad idea to come seek him. It had seemed so simple. Earth had been dying, the pokémon as well, and there had been rumors about the three guardians - the three who held the keys to peace… who could restore balance to the Pokemon Realm once more, with power to rival that of the legendary pokémon….
He had found them. He had suffered through years of trial, and finally, he had made it to Shadow Island, and the pokémon at the gates had judged him pure enough to enter. His one wish was for earth, after all, not for power or fame or riches… but then….
He had found out the truth.
The Guardians might be immortal, but their power came at a heavy price. Over the centuries, it had leeched away their sanity, and they were capricious, cruel beings that cared for nothing but their fellow guardians, and their pokemon. Even as he brought up Earth's sorry state, they had only laughed.
“Who brought Earth to this despair?” Charlotte had murmured, her eyes blood-gold, as she settled flaming wings behind her back. “Why should we sacrifice our lives for the greater good?”
“I don't want them to die.” Red had said, petulantly, and there had been pure hate in his eyes. “They're all I have. I won't let you take them away.”
Lance had not spoken, and so Bryan had followed him after the meal had concluded, food that was scarcely seen in Kanto anymore. It must be magic…
Perhaps the Dragon Master would be amenable to his plan.

But everything had fallen apart. The Dragon Master was nothing more than a shell of ice and iron, and Bryan only felt pity. His illusions had broken. There was no way the guardians could ever help the world now…
He turned to leave, but found the path missing.
“Lance, what have you done?”
“I?” He crooned. “Nothing. However, I cannot say the same for the others.”
Red faded into view, the shadows peeling away from his night-black armor. “Lance…”
“Yes, my love?”
“Can I kill him?”
Bryan stared in disbelief at the child.

“If you wish.” Lance said carelessly.
“I want to.” Red pouted, ruby eyes glimmering. “So can I?”
“Yes.”
Bryan reacted before he knew what he was doing, as Mukkuhawk and Toritoidon exploded out of their poke balls, but they were carelessly brushed aside with two sweeps of lightning from Red's fingertips.
“We can't have you finding out.” Red smiled, before he formed a weapon in his hands. The blade was black lightning, the hilt gold. “You should never have come.”
What Bryan might have said was lost in the gurgle of death, and his pokémon were swiftly dispatched, darkness seeping into their bodies.

The legendary pokémon had hidden, merged with their Chosen, and so they watched from within while the three Guardians waited for time to end, for Serebii was trapped now.
Time might continue forever, and despair enveloped the land. Perhaps it was better that way.
That was all that mattered now…
And when Lance and Red kissed, they felt the last of their sanity trickling away.
