Chapter Four: Cassia’s Pokemon Discovery
It was a bitterly cold night; the night Torchic decided to run away from her. Cassia sat huddled under a big tree trying to stay warm, she had been unable to build herself a fire and she only had her sweater to keep her warm. She found the tree after she'd spent hours walking through the woods trying to find Torchic. Her feet were sore; she was cold, hungry, and lonely.
'I hope Torchic is okay wherever he's at.' she thought to herself as she shivered in the night air. 'Why did I scold him? I should've praised him, but I was stupid, and now I'm paying the price.' she said punishing and scolding herself.
She sat and continued to mentally berate herself when a long piercing howl echoed through the eerily still, cold night air.
"Hooouunnnnd!" it cried.
There was several more that followed. Suddenly a twig snapped and its sound reverberated through the air like a bomb going off. It exploded in her ears. She looked around nervously but saw nothing at first, then....
"Grrrrrrrrrr..." a quiet snarling reached her ears.
Cassia stiffened. Slowly, she turned her head to look into the black woods to her right and dozens of glowing red eyes stared back. She was completely surrounded. Then out of nowhere a pack of Houndour appeared. Their red eyes looking as if they could see right into her soul. Their leader was a young Houndoom. His black coat was glossy, like it was spun of black satin or silk and his eyes were a dark red.
He lowered his head and gave a low muttering growl and his pack quickly backed away melting into the nearby shadows. Cassia looked on nervously, as he slowly approached her. She didn’t know what to do. She had no pokemon to battle with or to protect her so she was in real trouble should the Houndoom decide to attack her. So without thinking she threw her Torchic's poke ball at the Houndoom, after three rocks and a ping from the ball he was captured.
The Houndour pack ran off seeing that their leader had been caught, they didn't want that to happen to them too.
"I'll call him Echo." she thought to herself. Suddenly she came up with a plan to help her through the night. "Echo! Go!" she yelled, tossing his ball to the ground. The woods were suddenly lit up then went dark as the Houndoom leader appeared before her.
"Hound." he said sitting down in front of her, watching her carefully.
"Echo. I need you to do me a favor. Can you bring me some wood so we can build a fire? I can't see very well in the dark and to tell ya the truth these woods freak me out. Oh, and if you find anything else out of the ordinary out there bring it along with you ok? Now, go." she said to her new friend.
"Doom." he said trotting off into the night.
'Please hurry and be careful Echo. I'm depending on you.' she thought quietly.
Echo moved through the woods with ease. He was slowly walking at first, and then broke into a full loping sprint. He didn’t want to leave his new trainer alone for too long since she had voiced her discomfort with the area to him earlier. He walked through the thick underbrush, as twigs and roots scraped his legs; he occasionally picked up sticks he saw along the way with his tail; fulfilling his trainer's request.
As he past a line of trees, something glinted in the full moonlight. It caught Echo’s eye and he trotted over to it cautiously. He sniffed the air around the strange object and it smelled of humans, blood and fear. His hackles rose slightly; he didn’t want to touch it, but his trainer had told him to bring back anything he found, so he picked it up and then raced off at full speed, back through the woods; back to Cassia.
Cassia sat patiently and awaited the return of her pokemon. Soon she heard the thumping of paws and Echo burst into the clearing carrying a bundle of sticks on his back held in place with his tail and a leather object with six small spheres attached to it.
“Doom…Hound?” he barked looking at her.
“Echo! Thank you so much. That’s great.” Cassia said hugging the dark dog around the neck in delight. Cassia lifted the wood from his back and put it into a large pile and backed up. “Okay, Echo. Flamethrower!” she said. Echo nodded and shot a small blast of flames at the wood, which ignited immediately. At least she would not freeze tonight.
Echo remembered the belt like thing that hung around his neck and trotted over to Cassia, nudging her with his nose.
“Houndoom.” He said.
“Huh? What’s wrong Echo? What do you have there?” she said lifting the belt from his neck. She looked at the object in her hand.
"These are poke balls," she said closely examining them. On the belt were six balls. A Moon ball, a Master ball, a Fast ball, a Luxury ball, a Net ball and a Love ball.
"These balls are beautiful, I wonder who they belong too and if they have pokemon in them. Echo, did you find these in the woods?" she asked looking to him for answers.
He nodded furiously.
"Will you show me where?" she asked. He shook his head no. He didn't want his trainer anywhere near that area.
"Well, okay. I guess for now they're mine. I want to see what is in one though." she said removing the Moon ball from the belt.
"Go! Poke ball!" she said hurtling the ball to the forest Floor.
The area erupts in light when she could see again before her stood a beautiful blue flying type pokemon.
"Latios" he said closely watching her. He didn't know who she was but she seemed trustworthy.
"I don't know what kind of pokemon you are, but for now I am your new trainer and my name is Cassia. Would it be alright if I gave you a name?" she asked the pokemon. He nodded.
"Okay, how about Soul dew? Soul for short." she said looking at him for his reaction.
He was delighted with his new name and showed her by flying in tight circles around her head trilling. She laughed at his giddiness.
"Well, it's about time we got some sleep you guys; it's going to be a long way out of here tomorrow. Soul, you can either sleep in your poke ball or out here with me and Echo it's up to you." she said settling herself under the tree nearest to the fire.
Soul settled himself next to her while Echo positioned himself a few yards away in front of her so he could keep watch through the night. She fell into an uneasy sleep, her dreams were of Torchic.
The next morning she recalled Soul into his ball and Echo and herself broke camp, and slowly made their way for home.
Cassia clipped the six poke balls and Echo's to her own belt, but kept the other as back up. They hiked for what seemed like hours till she and Echo finally came within viewing range of Little Root.
She was disappointed that she missed out going to Odale the day before, but planned on trying to go later today.
She almost made it to the entrance of town when a tiny orange blur tackled her to the ground. It was Torchic!'I hope Torchic is okay wherever he's at.' she thought to herself as she shivered in the night air. 'Why did I scold him? I should've praised him, but I was stupid, and now I'm paying the price.' she said punishing and scolding herself.

She was disappointed that she missed out going to Odale the day before, but planned on trying to go later today.
"Torchic; I was so worried about you, and thought you might not have come back." Cassia said crying, and tightly hugging her first pokemon.
"You know you're lucky I found him first, and got to him in time. Some trainers thought he was wild and tried to capture him, but I said he was mine, I found him on Route 102 and knew he was yours, because there are no wild Torchic around here." Said a small and familiar voice.
"He stayed at my house last night and this morning headed for the woods, searching for you."
It was Mary. She stepped out of the shadows and into view smiling the whole time.
"Thanks a bunch Mary, I got into a fight with my mom and he got caught in the middle of it. The price to pay: freezing all night worrying about him." she said as she got back up and brushed herself off. Ya of course, now know I owe you one right?" Cassia said winking.
"Well, really ya don't but I do have a favor. When you get some poke balls can you catch me a pokemon? Something gentle like a Wurmple or a Taillow? Maybe? Mary said looking at Cassia hopefully.
“I don't think I'll have to. You see my pokemon Echo found some poke balls in the woods last night, may be there is one in them you can have. Uh, let's see maybe these two." she said plucking the Netball and Fastball off her belt. "Poke balls Go." she said
Both balls hit the ground simultaneously and opened erupting the area with light. Temporarily blinded, Cassia and Mary waited to see what pokemon they were.
"Mudkip" said a little blue fish like pokemon.
"Pika-pikachu" said a little yellow rabbit like pokemon with red cheeks as they appeared before Cassia.
"What are they Cassia?" Mary asked looking at them curiously.
"Well, lets see I think the blue one is called a Mudkip it's a water pokemon and the yellow one is uh, um...a Pikachu an electric pokemon." Cassia said looking at them.
"Are you going to keep them?" Mary asked.
"For now, yeah. Do you want one of these? They are cute and look gentle. I think you should have the Mudkip. He's adorable." she said walking over to it and picking it up.
"Really?! You're going to give me your Mudkip for me to have as my own?" Mary asked surprised.
"Sure, why not you said you wanted a gentle pokemon and from what I understand Mudkip are really docile and easy to train." she said handing it to her.
"Wow!! My very own pokemon; I going to name him Skye! Since he's blue." Mary said taking the Mudkip from Cassia and looking at him fondly. "Oh. Cassia, thank you so much, I'll owe you soon." Mary said heading home with her new Mudkip following close behind her.
"Hey Mary, I've got to get to Odale Town, do me a favor if you see my mom tell her I'm sorry and I'm fine okay? I'll see ya." Cassia said heading up the road.
"You can count on me Cassia, I'll tell her. Thanks for Skye; I promise to take good care of him! Bye!" Mary said waving. Before heading up to Odale Cassia put the Netball back on her belt and looked at her new Pikachu.
"Well, now what to call you hmmm...how about Sparky?" Cassia asked the Pikachu. "Pikachu-pika" he said wiggling his ears.
"Well now that is settled. Time to introduce you to your new friends. Sparky; this is Echo and Blaze." she said pointing to Houndoom and Torchic.
"Pikachu" Sparky said, saying hello.
"Oh, Torchic; your new name is Blaze. I thought of it while I was searching for you hope you like it. I'll have to get you a new poke ball I kind of had to use yours. It came in handy, though cause' if not for it I would not have caught Echo." she said patting the dog on the head.
"Well, we better be going, Echo! Sparky! Return. Come on Blaze let's head to Odale Town." Cassia said as they continued on the road to Odale.
After about an hour of walking Cassia reached Odale Town. It was small but a very nice place. "I wonder where Brendan is, better keep looking." she said looking around.
