Chapter 4 - A talk with Fuji
Angela was reading her novel in class when Fuji approached her. It was during one of their free periods as the subject teacher had been called away for a meeting with the principal. The students of the class were therefore given the privilege to do their own things so long they kept their volume down. Eiji had taken the chance to catch a few winks, while Fuji decided to engage a conversation with Angela.
"Angela-san, do you have a moment to spare?" Fuji asked politely.
Angela glanced up from her book, and nodded after some hesitance. She put a bookmark at the page she had stopped and asked, "So... what can I do to help you?"
A frown marred Angela's features, as she failed to come up with any possible reason behind Fuji's sudden desire to engage her in conversation.
"Aa... nothing much, I merely wanted to have a talk with you. Despite being transferred over here for a week, I've notice that you don't seemed to have make many friends... other than interacting with your fellow team mates in the tennis club, you seemed to have a lack of companionship in class and outside of class; unless it's on the court." Fuji said, choosing his words carefully as he did so, for he had no desire to offend the girl.
For a while, Angela was silent for she had no idea what to say in response. After all, this situation have been so common in her life that she'd no longer pay any attention to it anymore. Now that Fuji brought up the subject, she couldn't help but sighed.
"Well... I don't exactly have many friends in America too, so I thought it was fine." Angela replied, a faint blush visible on her cheeks.
"Aa... then I suppose you will get along with Tezuka." Fuji commented with a smile. Despite it being a gesture of politeness, Angela couldn't help but felt unnerved at the sight of Fuji's smile.
"Is that so?" Angela started warily, yet she had to admit her interest was piqued. "What makes you think that we would get along?"
Fuji's smile widened, "Aa... like you, Tezuka enjoys reading as a form of leisure activity. He also doesn't have much friends because he always so serious and people usually refrain from approaching him, unless they have something important to discuss with him."
"Ah... now that you mention it, he doesn't really seem like an approachable person." Angela commented.
"Yeah... he lacks certain social skills and experience."
Angela was about to say more when the school bell rang; bringing an end to their free period. She flashed a smile to Fuji as he strolled back to his seat just as the next subject teacher entered the class. Angela diverted her attention back to the lesson and pushed any random thoughts to the back of her mind. It was time to concentrate.
Sometime later, Angela found herself having trouble concentrating on her own game for she knew Tezuka was merely a few courts away, playing Oishi in the school ranking tournament. She was half tempted to forfeit her own game and head over to watch Tezuka in action, for she had heard many tales of Tezuka's unbeatable record in the ranking games in her short time at Seigaku. The opportunity to watch Tezuka himself in action was not a sight to be missed. Seeing a match in person was definitely far better than watching the game through recorded tapes and videos. Yet, she knew she could not do it, for she was not going to loose the chance of becoming a regular for her team just to see Tezuka's game.
She had made a promise with her sister, Amanda, that she would make it into the team. Together they would face-off each other on court as opponents, rather than partners this time around. Amanda had already made it to Hyoutei Tennis Club, Girls' team. Now it was her turn to get into the Seigaku girls team, and she was not going to let go of the chance that easily.
Taking in a deep breath, she pushed all stray thoughts to the furthest depths of her mind and concentrated on her game; her mind thinking of nothing else but focusing on the moves of her opponent. She was going to crush her opponent. Within minutes, her game ended, and she left the court with a triumphant smile on her face with a wonderful score of '6-1'.
She was on her way to the female changing room when she heard cheers of victory coming from Tezuka's supporters who crowded themselves around the fencing as they watched the game in earnest anticipation. The cheers indicated that Tezuka had once again, added another victory to his perfect record of games. A smile displayed itself on her lips, despite the disappointment of not been able to watch Tezuka live in action. However, she knew there were many other chances for her to do so in the future. After all, they were in the same school, and she could always go to their games in the National if she really wanted to watch Tezuka played on courts.
A while later, she reappeared from the female changing room looking fresh and confident with herself. She was about to set off for home when she noticed the whole group of boys from the tennis team waiting around near the school gate. Curiosity getting the better of her, she asked.
"What are you guys doing around here?"
"Aa... we were waiting for you?" Fuji replied.
Now Angela was bewildered, for she had no idea as to why the whole group of them would be waiting for her near the school gate. "May I know what I've done to deserve having a whole group of Seigaku's regulars waiting for me?"
Before anyone else could speak up, the redhead of the group bounced over next to her and gave her a hug, causing her to stiffen in surprise. However, relief flooded through her upon Eiji's next words.
"Congratulations for obtaining a regular seating in the girls' team!" Kikumaru Eiji beamed, as he released the girl from his crushing embrace.
For a while, she couldn't speak as everyone came forward to congratulate her on her victory. A blush crept over her face, as she uttered soft 'Thanks' in response. Finally, it was Tezuka's turn, and Angela waited in anticipation on what the stoic buchou is going to say.
"Congratulations on making the team." Tezuka said.
Despite the lack of words, Angela still felt happy, for this is the first time Tezuka had ever spoken to her. The last time when they met, all Tezuka had done was give her a simple nod of acknowledgement, accompanied by a solemn 'Hn'.
"Thank you." she responded before turning to the others. "As much as I would love to hang out with you guys, I'm afraid I'll have to leave. My sister is probably home waiting for me to inform her of the good news."
"Saa... I guess, we'll see you tomorrow in class then." Fuji responded on the team's behalf.
Angela said nothing but smile in return, her eyes scanned the members of the boys' team, lingering a while longer when her eyes met Tezuka's. Nothing was exchanged between them except a silent nod of their heads. Then, Angela turned on her heels and walked away from the group, towards the direction of her home.
