Chapter 2: INTO THE FIRE

After Shampoo's meal, me and the guys regrouped. We'd decided to get out of here and find out for ourselves what was going on. It was still dark out and most of the townspeople were asleep. This was going to be difficult with the four of us.

As Gosunkugi, Daisuke, Hiroshi, and I slowly approached the exit door, I glanced across the room and saw P-Chan glaring at me from Akane's bed. He didn't look too happy, but he wasn't real broken up that I was leaving, either. I shrugged and moved closer to the soldier posted at the door. He was facing us, so we acted casual.

When we were sure there were no other soldiers looking our way, Gosunkugi asked the soldier in front of the door if he could step outside for a minute to take a leak. After hesitating a moment, the guard turned to open the door.

That's when we made our move. As he opened the door, I came up behind him and quickly tapped a spot on the back of his neck to make him pass out. Hiroshi and Daisuke each got under one of his arms to keep him from making impact with the floor. They dragged him outside and placed him on the ground, in the bushes off to the left. Gosunkugi closed the door as we left the building.

"Well, what should we do with him?" Daisuke asked.

"Just leave him there," I said.

"Should we take his gun?" Hiroshi suggested.

"Of course we should!" Daisuke exclaimed. "I swear, if I weren't around, you wouldn't know how to keep your own head on your shoulders."

Hiroshi pondered this for a second and grabbed the guy's rifle. I held out my hands expectantly. Hiroshi sighed and passed me the submachine gun, but he found the guy's sidearm as well; a small pistol. I held mine up and posed like a tough guy for the hell of it.

"Man, what the hell are we gonna do with these guns?" I asked, realizing I'd never even used a gun in my life. I chuckled a little.

At that moment, the exit door swung open and I spun around and nearly shot Shampoo, who stepped outside with us and quietly closed the door behind her.

"Holy hell, Shampoo!" I whispered loudly.

"Shampoo go with Ranma!" she exclaimed.

"Come on, Shampoo, it might be dangerous." Besides, why would she want to risk her life by following us?

"Is exactly why you need me! Shampoo can make potions and herbs of healing!"

Well, that explained it. Rock on, then.

"...Man.........alright. We're just going to go see what's going on though, ok? We gotta keep a low profile for now."

"Ok!"

We turned and were getting ready to leave when we ran right into Tatewaki Kuno, which made us all yell out in surprise, and I nearly shot HIM, too.

"FUCK, Kuno! What the hell are you doing out here?" I asked.

He gazed towards the bushes on the left side of the doorway, a little ways off from where we hid the soldier. I could just barely make out the foot of one of those soldiers, but this wasn't our guy. So, apparantly, Kuno executed the same plan by himself...and now, since I got the help, I'm stuck dragging around all these people.

"I see you have decided to make a rash decision," Kuno said, smirking.

"What are you babbling about now, Kuno?" I wanted to get this overwith.

"I know where you are going, and I know what you are looking for. But you do not know. I can show you that which you seek, but do not understand."

What the FUCK is he talking about?

"Yeah? Then why don't you help us out here?" Gosunkugi asked.

"Perhaps I shall...but, should I not ask for some...compensation for my help?"

I hated doing this. I pulled ten photos out of my back pocket and threw them at Kuno. He immediately picked them all up and began drooling. I'm not telling you what these pictures are of; let's just say it involves me, some cold water, and little or no clothing. The others looked at me.

Fuck off, I mouthed to them.

After a few moments of drooling, Kuno returned to normal and pocketed the photos. "I shall now help you, Saotome."

"Well, let's get going then. We don't want to get caught, right?"

The soldier I knocked out sat straight up, conscious, and scared the fuck out of all of us--except an unwary Shampoo, who was standing in front of the soldier.

"Right!" she said, and she lifted her right leg and her heel collided with the soldier's chin, knocking him back into unconsciousness. Shampoo walked away, unfazed, and we followed shortly after a brief snicker.

* * * * *

We had gotten off the main road, which was kinda muddy (it was a dirt road), and we were now on our way through the woods. I had never been to these woods, but I could tell we were getting close to Nerima.

"What are we looking for, Kuno?" Gosunkugi asked.

"What you seek is a mansion deep in these woods. I overheard two of those heathens talking about the Arkley Mansion, and how something went wrong with some kind of test."

"So that's why they evacuated the town?" I asked, unbelieving. "A failed test?"

"That is the information I overheard."

"Wow," Daisuke said, "I wonder what kinda test made them evacuate an entire town?"

"Well, let's hope we don't find out the hard way," Hiroshi said nervously.

"Do not even think such bad thoughts around Shampoo!" she yelled. "No need bad luck in situations like these."

We continued further into the woods. We weren't seeming to find our way until Shampoo spotted something through the trees. Apparently, we were at the front gates to the Arkley Mansion. The gate wasn't that hard to open; I simply pushed it until we all got through. And security wasn't that tight...'cause no one was there...of course, I wouldn't have worried...

...if I hadn't just seen that huge puddle of blood on the ground in front of us.

"Where the hell did that come from?" Kuno asked, stopping.

"Man, where do you THINK it came from?" Daisuke asked sarcastically, shaking his head.

"Uh...Saotome," Gosunkugi muttered, looking around. "I think we better go now..."

"Just a minute, Gos! I wanna know what did this..."

"Was big animal, maybe bear!"

Suddenly, the bushes to our right began to rustle. I almost let it have it with my submachine gun, but I remembered my earlier almost-accident with Shampoo, and the other one with Kuno, so I kept my finger off the trigger.

Two figures burst out of the bushes, causing us to jump back, startled. When I was coherent, I realized it was Ryoga and Akane!

Now what the fuck were the two of them doing here?

"What the fuck are the two of you doing here?" I asked.

"Woah, hey," Ryoga said, staring at the weapon. "It's just us." I realized I was still pointing the submachine gun at him, so I lowered it.

"Ryoga woke me up and said you escaped," Akane informed him. "Beat up a guard, too, I hear! And you bring Shampoo along but you don't even think about ME?! How inconsiderate of you!"

Shampoo merely stuck her tongue out at Akane as she stood next to me.

"Calm down...look, we've got bigger problems now." I pointed to the large puddle of blood on the ground.

Akane gasped.

"Woah," Ryoga commented, eyes wide. "What the fuck happened there?"

"I THINK WE'RE ABOUT TO FIND OUT!" Gosunkugi shouted suddenly. We suddenly realized he had been pointing at something for quite a while...the path from which we had come. Several ugly, fierce-looking dogs were blocking the path back to the road...but they were also surrounding us in all directions...

...except for one. I decided to take a chance on it.

"Ok," I whispered, to the others, not moving. "When I say 'go', follow me and run like hell."

They all nodded. As I looked at these dogs, I noticed that they had chunks of flesh and muscle hanging off of them. It was pretty disturbing. Was this real?

"...Ready...set..."

"AAAARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!" Gosunkugi took off running towards the Arkley Mansion, and I immediately wanted to chase him down and beat the crap outta him for possibly dooming us, but I knew that we'd all die if we didn't move now.

"Fuck! RUN!"

We all ran after him, towards the mansion. I could hear the others screaming, and I hoped they were good runners. Another time I heard a loud thud, and I knew that someone had fallen down, which scared the hell out of me. We ran for the mansion as fast as we could, and I heard Gosunkugi calling us from behind as we raced through the tall grass.

"Saotome, WAIT! HELP ME!" he screamed.

As we reached the front porch, Kuno yanked open the door and the others ran inside. I stopped in the doorway, turned around, and saw Gosunkugi running towards me. I think he was actually running as fast as he could, which was kinda pathetic.

Nevertheless, I tried to encourage him. "Come on, Gos, you're almost there!"

It seemed to work. He smiled as he quickly stepped out of the tall grass...only to be pulled back in as a scaly green hand reached out and wrapped around his ankle, tripping him. Gosunkugi screamed as he slid back into the grass on his stomach.

"FUCK!" I yelled.

I waited a moment and heard some pretty horrendous sounds; growling, screaming, ripping, roaring, slashing, slicing, dicing. The grass waved and shook violently. Then the screams stopped...and then I saw Gosunkugi's ripped-up corpse fly out of the grass, high up into the air, and coming straight at me. I quickly turned and slammed the door shut with my back against it. I felt him hit the door and bounce off it onto the ground.

I sank to the floor, panting. The others were trying to catch their breath, too. My shoulder felt a lot lighter, and I looked down, realizing I didn't have something that might be useful right about now.

"Fuck...I lost my fuckin' gun out there."

"Everyone ok?" Ryoga asked.

I shook my head. "Something got Gosunkugi..."

"Something got Hiroshi, too," Daisuke said, and we all looked over at Hiroshi, who was holding his bloody ankle. "He thinks it was one of those dogs."

"The wound is severe," Kuno noted.

"I go find some herbs for you," Shampoo offered. "Ranma come with me?"

I glanced at Akane real quick before agreeing. What was really weird was that Akane didn't even look fazed. Oh well. Guess she must not have noticed...or maybe she was sad about Gosunkugi?
