Reisha looked over at Jun. "So, your dad wants to hire her dad?"
He nodded. "It's his idea to build a new reputation for the company, which for him means a new building." He shook his head. "And it means I have to pretend to be nice for an evening."
"Jun..." Reisha started to reach out to him, but he just waved as he walked away.
"I'll see you tomorrow, Reisha." He had to hurry home and prepare what his father considered 'a mixture of modern and traditional food'. Which in normal terms, meant that he was making sushi, rice, and some American food for their guests.
Anna put on the nicest dress she had. It was white with a deep v-neck and had a ribbon around her waist. She curled her hair like her father asked. He reminded her that Mr. Higarashi loved America and loved the fact that her family was American. Here she was, standing in front of a mirror, looking her best for a man that beats on his kid. And she could do nothing.
The drive to the Higarashi mansion wasn't too long, however, the house was intimidating. The yard was so neat and green. She was afraid to step on the grass. Her mother fixed Anna's dress after they got to the door and rang the bell. Why were they fussing over her? Why did she have to be so perfect? It's not like she was the one sealing the deal.
Jun groaned as soon as he heard the bell. He pulled at the collar of his shirt. His father had insisted that he dress like a proper gentleman. That meant he had to wear a suit and tie. At least he was wearing an all black suit with a red tie, rather then the white and black one his father had suggested. His father was busy finishing up the touches on the contract which meant that he had to answer the door. Fixing his tie, he took a deep breath as he opened the door.
"You must be the Greens," he said with a bow. "It's a pleasure. Please, right this way." He had long ago learned that it easier to pretend to be nice and to actually care about others when it came to situations such as this.
His father came out a second later, a smile on his face as he met with Anna's father. "Mr. Green, it's a pleasure and a honor to finally meet you."
Anna's dad shook his hand. "Please, just call me Mike. If we are going to work together, I want you to be a friend. It's a pleasure to meet one of my fans," he said. "Though, I didn't know I had one until you yelled."
Anna tugged on his shirt. "It's 'called,' Dad, not 'yell,'" she whispered to correct his Japanese.
Mike smiled. "Yes. Excuse my Japanese. I'm still learning." He laughed. "This is my wife, Helena and my daughter, the one we talked about, Anna."
Anna bowed. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Higarashi."
Mr. Higarashi smiled. He switched over to English to make his guests more comfortable. "If you wish, we can speak English this evening." His eyes traveled to Anna. "Your daughter is just as radiant as you described her. I understand that she goes to the same school as my son, Jun."
Jun tensed. They were speaking English, and he only understood bits and pieces. "If you wish, I can go ahead and finish preparing the meal."
His father looked at him and nodded. Jun was looking for a way out, and that was the best excuse he could come up with. Casting another glance at Anna, he quickly darted toward the kitchen.
"Come, we will discuss business later. First let us eat!" Mr. Higarashi stated as he led them to the dining area. He had decided to go with a more traditional setting, which meant the low table and mats for his guests. "I hope that you do not mind the setting."
"Thank you for the comment," Anna said with a slight blush.
"Oh how lovely!" Anna's mother said as she looked at the setting of the dining room. "It's so beautiful!"
Anna was the only one still standing. "I think I will go help Jun. Plus, I believe he knows our homework assignment and I forgot to right it down. Please excuse me," she said sweetly.
Anna walked out, following the way Jun went. Her father turned back to Jun's father. "Please, let us speak Japanese. I must learn at some point. Besides, we are in your home."
Anna walked into the kitchen and watched as Jun finished preparing the meal. She walked over to him and pulled something out of her purse. She placed it on the table in front of him. It was some medical cream for swelling. She gave some to her friend back home awhen she found out her mother was beating her. It helped with the swelling and the bruising. Though, her friend eventually told a teacher and her mother went to jail, Anna feared it wouldn't be so simple with Jun. She knew he wouldn't accept it so she pushed it towards him and walked out of the room. She took her place beside her mother and put on a smile again.
Mr. Higarashi relented. "As you wish," he said upon switching back to Japanese. "So, how are you enjoying Japan so far?"
Jun stared at the cream she had left for him. She had been talking to Reisha about his father, something which she had no right to even inquire about. Looking at the cream, he just sighed. Taking it, he put it into his jacket pocket so his father wouldn't see it. With that he began to take out the sushi and rice. Moving, he set the plates down in front of each person before taking out the bottle of saki. Kneeling by his father he poured him a glass and then went to Mr. Green and his wife.
"Would you like some saki?"
Mr. Higarashi smiled. "I hope you enjoy the food. My son has quite the knack for cooking."
"I don't drink," Helena said with a smile.
Mike held his small cup as Jun poured for him. "Japan is everything we hoped it would be. Actually, it was the headmaster, Aki Seroto, at Jun and Anna's school that talked us into coming here. We have known him for many years."
Anna kept a soft smile on her face as her parents talked with Jun's father. They seemed to get a long so well. And as she listened to Jun's father laugh, she couldn't understand how someone so nice could turn into something so mean. Her eyes went back to Jun as they ate. His smug attitude wasn't present and he seemed like the perfect son. Anna looked down at her plate. She barely ate a thing. This secret was eating her very soul.
"Well I am certainly pleased that you find our country enjoyable," he told them with a smile. Holding up his cup, Jun poured him some more. They continued to talk and enjoy their meal, with Jun going about taking their plates and refilling their drinks when needed. Finally once the meal was done, Jun's father looked at Mr. Green.
"Now then, if you would like I have the contract ready for you to look over."
Jun finished taking the plates and what was left of the food and carried it back to the kitchen. Setting everything down, he leaned against the refrigerator and sighed. The night was almost over. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out the cream that Anna had given him.
Anna stood. "I think I'll go keep Jun company," she said smiling. "Thank you for a lovely dinner," she added and bowed before walking out.
When she got to the kitchen she found Jun putting on the cream. She walked over to him and took it from him. Slowly she moved her hand over his cheek. "It goes deeper into the skin if you use a circular motion," she said as her hand gently caressed his cheek. "Feel the tingle? That means it's working."
Jun tensed as she came in and started rubbing the cream onto his cheek. "Yes, well, I'll have to be certain to choose my fights more carefully," he told her. When she was through, he quickly began to busy himself by wrapping the food that could be saved. Since they had food left over he wouldn't have to bother with cooking for himself. At least one good thing came from this evening.
Once he was through with that he looked back. She was still there. "So, did you enjoy yourself this evening?"
Anna started helping him put away the food. "It would have been better if..." She shook her head. It wasn't her place. "Yes, it was wonderful. The food was great. You can really cook," she said as she started putting food in the fridge. "You know, if you want, you can come over to my place any time you want to and I can help you study. Or...if you just need to get out of the house."
What was she playing at? He couldn't understand why all of a sudden she was attempting to be sociable. "I will keep that in mind." He took the plates and set them in the dish washer. "However, I doubt that I will have the need. Generally it is just me in the house save for the rare occasions my father can pull himself away from his work." He wasn't complaining. He personally enjoyed it while his father was gone.
Once the dish washer started he looked back at her. There was a silence once more. In order to fill the void, he cleared his throat. "I am, pleased that you enjoyed my cooking." He had to remember to keep this formal. "If you wish, you can take some of the food home with you."
Anna glanced around the kitchen, looking at different things. "No, it's alright. I'm sure you will need it more than me," she said then smiled. "I understand why you don't want to come over. Guess I was being a bitch yesterday." She turned to the doorway, her parents and his father were laughing. They were enjoying themselves. "But I judged you before I really knew anything." She laughed. "Doesn't sound like I'll be leaving anytime soon. My parents seem to like your father..." Her voice trailed off. That sentence made her uncomfortable.
Jun tried to ignore most of what she had said. The way she spoke, it almost seemed like she pitied him. That was foolish. "Yes, well my father is a very likable man. That is why so many businessmen enjoy dealing with him. They are comfortable around him." Wiping his hands on a towel, he reached up and loosened his tie.
Knowing his father it was going to be a late night; and it seemed that he was suppose to entertain this girl rather than just go to his room and relax for the rest of the evening. "If you wish, I can show you around the house some. It might kill some time."
"No, that's ok. I'll leave you alone," she said smiling. She gave him a small wave. "I'll see you at school tomorrow." She walked back down the hall she first came to and out the front door. Slowly she made her way to the garden bench near the fountain and pulled out her phone. It had been vibrating the whole time she was eating. It was Brandon.
She sat down just as her phone started to ring. She chose to ignore it again.
"As you wish." He let her leave. Waiting until she was gone before grabbing the cream and putting it back into his pocket. Listening in on his father, he took a deep breath and sighed. Yes, it was going to be a long evening. Taking off his tie, he undid the top few buttons of his shirt so he could breathe easier. Taking off his coat, he went upstairs to his room and tossed them both on his bed.
A part of him wanted nothing more than to stay hidden in his room until the Green's left and his father went to bed. However, if his father found out that he'd left Anna alone, he was likely to get reprimanded. Running a hand through his hair, he weighed the outcome. Finally, he went back downstairs and outside to where she was.
"You know, if cell phones make you that upset you don't have to carry one around." He looked down at the small device. It was a newer model then the one he'd seen the other day...and pinker. It seemed that her mother had indeed purchased her another one.
Anna smiled. "Oh...it's not the phone." She put it on vibrate again. "You have a lovely home, Jun." What else could she say? She didn't want to bring anything uncomfortable up and she didn't want to say anything to make him seem like she pitied him, because she didn't. He wasn't desperate enough for pity. She just...understood. The reasons why he acted out the way he did, why he seemed to hate everything that breathed, it all came back down to his father. So it wasn't pity.
"Thank you," Jun said. For once seemingly genuinely sincere about what he was saying. "The house was my mother's design. When my father got the money, he had it built for her."
Her phone vibrated and she looked down at it. Brandon. Ignoring it she smiled at Jun again. "That's really nice of your father...to build a place for your mother. He must have really loved her."
Jun heard her phone vibrating and nodded. "If I'm interrupting anything...," he said, nodding to her phone.
Anna looked down at her phone again. Her smile fell. "No...there isn't anything to interrupt. Not anymore."
Jun smirked. "Long distance relationships never work. Physical contact, or at the very least a physical being is needed for a relationship to flourish."
"It's only been long distance for three days. It took him less than one to cheat," she said as her phone began vibrating again.
He nodded. "It's his idea to build a new reputation for the company, which for him means a new building." He shook his head. "And it means I have to pretend to be nice for an evening."
