"Is everything okay? Nothing seems to be missing...." Jun stopped as he looked down at her. She was shaking. Looking down at her hands he looked at the box and the bracelet. "What's that...?"
Anna closed the bracelet back in the box. Slowly she moved over to her waste basket and dropped it in the garbage. "It's nothing," she said slowly.
"If you say so...." Already he could hear the sirens coming. There was nothing to report, however. The cops came, did a sweep of the place. They dusted for fingerprints but found nothing. With nothing stolen all they could report was a breaking and entering. After Jun talked to the cops, he sighed and closed the door.
"I called someone to fix the window," he told her.
Anna stared as the window for a long time before going to the closet and sweeping up the pieces of glass. It was Eric. He broke into her home over a bracelet. Why? Why would he do something so stupid and reckless? What if her parents were home?
"I can't believe this," Jun muttered as he helped her to pick up the pieces of glass. "What kind of person breaks into someone's home and then doesn't take anything? I have all my new work equipment here, valuable electronics, and numerous other stuff yet none of it is missing."
Because he wasn't here for you, Jun, she wanted to say. He was here for her. She wanted to tell him, but he couldn't. Jun destroyed the things that belonged to the students at her school just for picking on her. If he knew that some guy had hit on her then broke into her house to give her a bracelet there would be no telling what he would do. Maybe Eric was just misunderstood. Maybe she took it the wrong way. Maybe he was just trying to be her friend and nothing more and she just thought wrong.
After the glass was picked up, Jun put it in the trash and then proceeded to deal with the man who came to fix the glass. While he worked, Jun looked over at Anna. She hadn't said anything since the break-in. "Anna," he said as he stroked her arm. "You don't think that has anything to do with what happened with...whatever happened with Eric today?"
Anna snapped her head to him sharply. "No," she said quickly. "No...he's not like that," she added a little softer.
She would see him tomorrow and try to let him explain. And she would take the bracelet back to him.
"I don't...like him, Anna. There's just something about him that I just don't trust," he told her.
Anna pulled away from his touch. "You don't know him like I do," she said and started upstairs. "You don't know him at all."
Jun watched as she went upstairs. He balled his hands into fists and cursed. "No, I don't know him," Jun spat. "And I'm glad for that."
Anna reached her hand in her waste basket and pulled out the little box. She walked over to her bed and sat down. The bracelet was very beautiful. She placed the box on the table by her bed and laid down. Tomorrow she will understand. She will ask him and he will tell her it was an accident that he broke her window. After all, nothing was stolen.
Jun should have spent that night doing paperwork and research for his company. Instead he was trying to dig up anything he could on Eric Matthews. Searching through anything he could find, he spent half the night but couldn't find a single thing. It was as if Eric Matthews simply didn't exist. Rubbing his eyes, the screen blurred. His vision was starting to go. "Merry Christmas," he muttered.
The next day Anna waited for Eric in the library. She didn't come to study, she came to talk. In her hands was the little box with the bracelet. This time, she brought her phone just in case. She wasn't sure why, but she felt like she would be better off with it. She stood when she saw Eric coming over to her. She placed the little box on the table for him.
"I told you...I can't accept it, Eric..." she said in a low voice.
Eric just smiled. "Girls say things they don't mean all the time," he told her. "I'm sure it would look good on you."
Anna sighed and sat down. "Well I'm not one of those girls, Eric. I won't wear it and I don't want it," she said and pushed it at him.
Eric sighed. "You're not like other girls. Most girls would love to get gifts like this."
Anna narrowed her eyes. "I'm engaged. If I should get a gift like that it should come from Jun."
Eric smiled. "I'm sorry if I offended you with the gift. I didn't mean any harm. I just wanted you to know that you're very special."
"Special?" Anna gestured for him to sit. "I need to know what exactly you mean by that and why you broke into my house. It's not like you." Her eyes were soft now.
Eric's eyes washed over her as her features softened. "I didn't mean to break in," he told her. "I knocked on the door and no one answered. I went to the window, and tripped and the glass broke. Since it was already broken, I figured I might as well open up the door and leave your gift."
Anna felt a sigh of relief. "I knew you didn't mean to do it. I didn't tell anyone it was you." She pushed the box at him again as he sat. "But I still can't take it. I won't take it."
Eric smiled. "Thank you.... I didn't realize that Jun was the violent type."
Anna quickly shook her head. "No! He's not!" she said sharply. "He's protective. He doesn't want anything to happen to me. Once I was nearly rapped while walking out at night and he took on all of the men by himself. They didn't even get a chance to touch me." She smiled. "He loves me very much."
"I see," he said slowly. "Well then, I don't think we're going to get much studying done today," he said with a laugh. "But call me when you want to set another study date."
"You're leaving? But you still haven't told me why you gave me the bracelet and what you mean by 'special,'" she said.
"I gave you the bracelet because you deserve it," he told her with a smile. "As for being special, well...you're one of the few girls that has truly captivated my attention."
The way he said that made her feel a chill. "What...is that suppose to mean?"
He just laughed and took the box. "Nothing bad, I promise. I'll be seeing you," he said with a small wave as he left the book store.
Anna sat there for a moment trying to understand. Slowly she stood and put on her coat. She walked out of the book store and started back home. Maybe studying alone was better.
Jun called the house phone, but there was still no answer. Groaning, he checked what he'd found out. He had left work early and was now driving back to Anna's house so that he could talk to her. Pulling up to the house, he saw her walking up. "Anna!" he said with a relieved sigh.
Anna smiled as she saw him. She walked over to him. "Jun! You're home early!" she said hugging him.
Jun hugged her tightly. "You can't see Eric anymore," he told her as he hugged her. "It's not safe to be around him." He pulled out some papers to show her. They were reports of a man killing girls. The sketch picture looked a lot like Eric. "I couldn't find anything on Eric Matthews...it's like he doesn't exist, but Richard Freemont does.
Anna pulled out of her arms. She looked at the pictures then at Jun. Her eyes were hard. "I can't believe you! You just can't let a person live, can you!? Just because the sketches looks like him means nothing. Eric wouldn't lie to me!" She threw the papers at him. "You're a jerk, Jun!"
"Anna, I'm just trying to look out for you. Something is seriously wrong with this guy," Jun told her. "He's the one who broke into the house isn't he?"
Anna crossed her arms under her chest. She was so mad, her head hurt. "It was an accident and it was only because he wanted to give me the bracelet! What is that you don't like about him? The fact that he helps me study so I can have more time with you, or the fact that somehow he finds more time to spend with me than you do?" She didn't wait for an answer. She went inside and up to her room. She slammed the door and locked it. Grabbing her pillow she put it over her face and screamed into it.
Jun was standing there hurt and pissed. "Fine!" He shouted. "I'll deal with this myself." Jumping into his car he sped off. He needed to blow off some steam. He didn't care how fast he was going, right now he was seeing red. He was just trying to look out for her! Couldn't she see that?
His knuckles were white form where he gripped the steering wheel too tightly. The only reason Eric got to spend more time with her was because she wanted to spend more time with him. Jun tried everything to spend time her and it never worked.
Anna grabbed her phone. If she called Reisha, she would call Jun. She had no other friends other than Eric. Hesitating at first, she pushed the buttons on her phone and called him.
"Hey...can we meet? I need to talk to someone..."
"Sure," Eric said quickly. "That's no problem I-" There was a brief silence followed by Eric shouting. "Hey man I'm just talking to your girl I-" The phone suddenly went off for a moment as there was the sound of racket. Yelling and thrashing sounds could be heard in the distance.
Anna instantly busted out of her room. She had only been to Eric's house once. It wasn't far from the library. She ran, forgetting her coat. She ran faster than she ever thought she could. Her chest hurt and her face stung with tears. How could Jun do that? How could he break into someone's house and do that? She had to get to Eric before he got hurt. She had to hurry.
Anna slid on ice and fell. She landed hard on her elbow and busted it open. Blood covered the snow. She hissed in pain but stood again and continued to run. Finally she could see Eric's house. She ran in.
"Eric!" she yelled.
Eric's front door had been kicked open and the living room was a mess. His clothes were badly torn as his face was covered in bruises and blood. "Anna?" he asked weakly as he tried to sit up.
Anna ran over to Eric. She got to the ground and pulled his face into her lap. "Oh my God! What did he do to you?" she said crying. "I'm so sorry. I'll call 911," she said and started getting out her phone.
"No," he said putting his hand on hers. "I'm okay.... Jun, he...he came over. He was pissed about something."
Anna held him close while she cried over him. "It's all my fault. He had these papers that looked like you...and all these girls were murdered and he got worried. I got mad and he took off..." She calmed herself. "It's not like him to do this...I have to call him." She pushed the speed dial on her phone to Jun and waited for him to answer.
Jun saw that Anna was calling. So she finally decided to call him. "Yes?" he asked. He was still pissed and didn't bother to hide it.
"Why did you beat up Eric!? How could you!? Jun, you could be charged with assault!" she said while trying to make herself clear through the tears. "I'm at his house...he's covered in blood, Jun..."
"What? Beat up Eric? I haven't even been around him," he said. It was then that he realized what else she said. "Anna, you can't be near him! Go home and lock the doors."
Anna stiffened. "Jun...you...you didn't..." Slowly she moved from Eric. "But his house is trashed...and he said it was you..." Anna's heart was pounding so hard her chest hurt. She didn't know what to believe. She looked at Eric who was covered in blood but Jun had never lied to her before and he would never lie about this. "Jun...I'm scared..." she whispered into the phone.
"Anna, think about it. I've never been to his house. I don't know where he lives!" Jun was at the office and people were staring, but he didn't give a crap. He shouted to someone. "Anna, if you can get out of the house now!" As he said this the phone went dead.
"Call the cops," he ordered. One of the ladies quickly did what he said. He handed them the papers he'd printed out and pointed to the name. "Tell the cops I think he has my fiancé."
That thought made his blood run cold.
Eric flipped the switch on the device, blocking her cell phone signal. "Damn, lover boy is good. He had me pegged from the start," he whispered as he looked up at her. Standing up slowly, he wiped the blood off on his shirt. "I was hoping to have more fun with you." He quickly moved to the door, shutting it and locking it before turning back to her.
"Jun!" Anna screamed into the phone. She was crying so hard that her voice cracked. "Jun!" She dropped the phone and backed up to the wall. "Don't come near me!" she screamed at Eric.
Eric just laughed at her. "Please girl. I've been doing this for quite some time. New city, new name, new girl...same old routine, same old screams." He pulled out a knife and dangled it in front of her. "Did Jun show you the crime pictures of the girls I killed? No, probably not. He doesn't have the guts to show you something like that. He wouldn't want to scare you."
Anna looked around. The placed was trashed and there was nothing to grab to protect herself. "But...the house...and you're bleeding..." She slid to the ground while her back pressed to the wall. Reaching over she grabbed leg of a broken table. It wasn't much but she wasn't just going to give up. "I trusted you..."She tried to wipe her eyes so she could see better, but she just couldn't stop crying. Her body shook furiously. She had never been more scared in her life.
"Yeah well...that was a mistake," he said. Walking up to her, he looked at the table and laughed. Brandishing the knife to her right, he quickly pulled out a syringe and stabbed it into her arm. "Night night," he whispered as he pushed the chemicals into her body.
Anna tried to stay awake, she really did. She tried to hold tightly to leg of the table, but sleep was too strong. "Jun..." she whispered right before everything went dark.
Eric reached out and caressed her face. Pressing his lips to hers he smiled. "Don't worry," he whispered. "Jun knows my face. He'll join your shortly." Grabbing her body, he put it into the van in his backyard and took off. If the psych evaluation he'd read on Jun Hisaragi was true, then he would be breaking down his door any moment. That was no fun. He wanted to be able to enjoy his prey.
"What the hell do you mean they can't help?" Jun was yelling into his phone as he heard the girl tell him. "My fiancée has been kidnapped by a murderer! Damn it!" He slammed his phone down, nearly wrecking his car when he took a turn at over a hundred miles. He looked at his GPS. He had to use a bit of cunning, but he'd synced it to Anna's phone. It was still on, which meant that he could still track it. He pulled up to Eric's house and wasted no time in kicking down the door. He saw the room was trashed as he found Anna's phone. He cursed again. Another dead end.
