Chapter 02: In the Arms of the Enemy
Sano blinked at Kenshin's retreating form for the second time that day. Why's he have ta be so stubborn...I was just trying to help, Sano thought as Kenshin entered his room and slammed the door shut.
Totally forgetting about his hunger and the stew left sitting on the table, he sighed and followed the small samurai to his bedroom door. He knocked, but no one answered, not that he expected anyone to, and he heard faint sniffles from inside.
Sano figured Kenshin was never going to answer the door, so he slowly pushed the door open and found the redhead lying on his stomach on his bed with his face in the pillow.
"Kenshin..." Sano said quietly.
Kenshin lay still and unresponsive to his name being called.
Sano frowned and sat on the edge of his bed and looked down at the smaller man, whose long hair was tempting Sano to run his hand through it. He avoided this temptation, however, and rested a hand on Kenshin's shoulder.
Kenshin stiffened.
"Kenshin, I understand----"
Kenshin turned his face off the pillow to face him. "No, you do not understand...I hate being treated like this, like a child!" He sat up on the bed. "Why does everyone treat ME like this, and not anyone else?!"
Sano had a pretty good idea what the answer to that question was: His looks.
Kenshin sighed and seemed surprised at himself for his uncharacteristic outburst. "I'm sorry Sano..."
"No...you have every right to be mad. Just try and be more careful."

The rest of the day passed by fairly smoothly, neither Sano nor Kenshin brought up the topic of the earlier incident, much to the redhead's relief, until, that is, when Kenshin decided that 11:00 PM was an opportune time to go pick up rice in town.
Sano caught Kenshin by the wrist just as he was about to head out of the dojo. "And just what do you think you're doing?" Sano asked in a perplexed voice.
Kenshin blinked up at the brunette. "I was just going to go pick up some rice in town--..."
Sano sweatdropped. "Pick up rice???" He asked. "You do know that it's 11:00 at night, right?"
Kenshin put a hand on his hip and frowned. "I realized that, that I did," He said, "But that makes it all the better...do you know anyone else who goes out at 11:00 to get rice?"
"Well no, because--...!"
"Exactly! Therefore it will be less crowded, that it will," Kenshin said matter-of-factly, cutting off Sano's clearly much more agreeable side of the argument about why it's good not to go out at 11:00 at night, as if it wasn't already obvious.
Sano looked at Kenshin as if the redhead was deranged. He smacked his forehead. "Do you have any sense of reasonability at all?!"
"Well of course--..." Kenshin retorted, glaring.
Sano's eye twitched slightly. "Kenshin, just go to bed," He demanded, cutting him off.
Kenshin stomped his foot rather childishly. "What makes you think--..." And he was cut off yet again.
Sano looked irritated. "I said go to bed," He told the shorter man who wasn't at all acting like a 27-year-old should be.
Kenshin's violet eyes flashed in anger as if he was going to turn into the Battousai right on the spot. "Fine...have it your way! Like always!" He screamed and stomped off to his room looking flustered.
Sano sighed as he heard the door slam shut and leaned against the wall in mental exhaustion. "I definitely DO NOT always have it my way..." Sano muttered to himself before dragging his feet to his own bedroom.

Kenshin peeked one eye open at what he was guessing to be around one in the morning. By this time he had decided that Sano had no right telling him what to do and he could make perfectly good decisions by himself.
He opened both eyes and slipped one foot from under the covers and onto the wooden floor to check for squeaky floorboards. Finding none, he got fully out of bed and crept out of his room. Once outside the dojo, he smiled to himself at his foolishness. He really hadn't needed to creep out in such a way...Sano wouldn't wake up if he had stomped out and slammed the door shut instead.
He continued down the dirt road and across the bridge with utter confidence in himself.
The town was dead silent save for the chirping of crickets in the tall grass lining the shops and Kenshin continued his way down toward his destination...the rice and noodle stand.
He had barely walked a few feet when he heard faint footsteps behind him as if he had a stalker who was unsuccessfully trying to be silent while on the gravel road. He stopped in his tracks and a second later the footsteps also went quiet.
Now, of course he had come prepared for something like this, right? His hand went immediately to the hilt of his...sword? He froze and went extremely pale, not that this was noticeable in the dead of night...or should I say morning?
Kenshin's breath came out shaky. How could he have gone out of the dojo at one and totally forget to bring his sword?!
Kenshin didn't like the look of this. He swerved around on his heel to face whoever it was, only to be greeted by an empty dark street. He sighed and faced forward again. Had he been hearing things?
But no sooner had he started walking again when he was pushed face forward onto the road and felt someone heavy and muscular straddling his waist from behind.
His captor laughed gruffly and lifted Kenshin's face off the ground by pulling his long hair. "Look what walked right into my grasp again...and in the middle of the night, too," He whispered into the samurai's ear before dropping his hair and immediately Kenshin recognized who it was.
"You bastard..." Kenshin said, struggling in vain under the large man. "Get your fucking dirty hands off of me!"
The man laughed again. "Such big words, Battousai the Man Slayer."
Kenshin gasped. "Wh-what?" He said in panic.
The man leaned over so that his breath tickled the back of the samurai's neck. "You heard me." He pushed the red ponytail out of the way and let his lips connect with the pale back of Kenshin's neck.
Kenshin yelped in surprise and immediately tried to buck his captor off without much success, in fact, this action only succeeded in making the man all the more aroused.
The man then let his tongue flick out and Kenshin's shivers were definitely not ones of delight.
His captor smirked against Kenshin's flesh. "Are you not enjoying this, Battousai?" He whispered into the redhead's ear.
Kenshin growled in defiance, seriously wishing he was back at the dojo, in bed, and fast asleep. God, Sano, where are you? He asked himself, although somehow knowing Sano was still sound asleep without a clue.

And the little rurouni was quite right. Sano's snores filled his room as he dozed on.
