Misao let her eyes travel through the darkness but all she was able to make out were the outlines of the cave walls. Frowning she squinted her eyes before letting out a frustrated sigh and turned towards Aoshi. She noticed he was tense and his free hand seemed to be moving towards his coat opening.

“Aoshi what- “

Before she could finish the sentence, she was roughly shoved to the side stumbling and falling on her backside as the sound of metal hitting metal echoed through out the cave. Pulling herself to her feet she glanced over towards the sound to see two figures moving around in the darkness.

Aoshi pushed against the sword throwing his attacker back somewhat before quickly pulling out his second kodaichi the blade slicing through the air before being blocked, as his first one came whirling around towards the attackers throat. The blade sliced through air once more as the shadowed figure slipped away from him.

Ice blue eyes scanned the darkness before a faint shift in the air near his left alerted him, moving swiftly he dodged the blow his own weapons moving out to attack. Metal clashed with metal once more and this time he was able to glimpse the person attacking him.

Deep brown eyes stared blankly back at him before the figure jumped back to fade into the shadows once again. Lips twitching into the smallest of frowns he let his senses move out to find the other. His eyes widening when he felt the other hovering a few feet away from Misao.

--

Misao had been watching as best she could amazed at the speed and skill the two were using. When the figure had literally disappeared she frowned wondering where he had gotten to. Her question was answered when she felt the presence of another above her, panic rising up inside her only to be roughly shoved back down as stubborn pride clawed its way back up. Pushing off the ground she just dodged the sword aimed at her as she flung three kunai at him. The sound of two bouncing off his blade as the third ripped through fabric.

Alert she listened for the next attack just able to dodge this one as the sword came straight for her, her legs sweeping out to block the kick coming towards her. She continued this until the sound of metal hitting metal echoed in the cave once more.

Jade eyes glanced up to see Aoshi towering over her his twin kodaichi staving off the figure's sword. The two struggled before the sword was shoved away and the twin blades sliced through the figure's chest. Misao watched as they stumbled backwards before fading away again.

Slowly climbing to her feet she kept her guard up not sure if the figure was going to attack again or if that was it. She could feel Aoshi standing behind her his ki swirling around her protectively, the feeling causing a faint blush to stain her cheeks.

“Where'd it go?” she whispered as her eyes watched the darkness

She didn't get an answer but she felt his body shift before he left her side once more the sounds of battle reaching her in the darkness. Reaching inside her jacket she let her fingers slip over the cool metal of her kunai, gripping the worn leather handles she carefully slid them out her eyes watchful as her ears let her follow the hidden battle.

--

He could feel the figure's ki slipping the atmosphere around them lightening just the slightest letting his own ki flare up. Stepping back he closed his eyes letting his heighten hearing find his opponent. He could hear Misao's faint breathing and rapid heartbeat, his own calm breathing but there was nothing to indicate the figure was even there.

Snapping open his eyes he moved to the right missing the attack and countering with one of his own. The figure hissed out in pain when one of his blades sliced its arm making it move away from him. Bright ice blue eyes followed the figure's movements as his grip tightened on the hilt of his weapons.

Lunging forwards he stuck out his blades slicing into the figure just as a cluster of kunai cut through the air striking the figure and pulling a surprised grunt from them. Moving into finish him off he found his blades once again cutting through thin air. Growling in frustration he let his ki flare up noticing that the others had faded away, the illusion that had been placed around them gone along with it.

Still keeping his sense alert he replaced his blades before moving towards Misao. She was still tense not sure if she should trust the lull that had fallen over them. When cool fingers brushed against her hand she jumped and almost had a heart attack when she found two luminescent blue eyes staring down at her. Sagging in relief she let out the breath she'd been holding only to turn and scowl up at him.

“Don't do that!” she hissed through clenched teeth

She thought she heard a quiet chuckle but couldn't be sure, she did jump once more when she felt a hand rest lightly on the small of her back. Taking in a calming breath she let Aoshi lead her through the cave, hoping they wouldn't run across the shadowed figure.

She had tried to follow along in case something happened but with all the twists and turns and nothing but blackness around her she gave up trusting Aoshi would lead her safely out. As they made their way through the tunnels Aoshi noticed that the ki that seemed to have faded now seemed to be growing the deeper they went inside.

Pulling Misao closer he let his fingers brush over the hilt of his weapons before turning down the next tunnel. Misao gasped her whole body shaking as she saw the sword blade from earlier only inches from her face. Aoshi's weapon the only thing holding it back as his hand wrapped around her waist and slowly pulled her out of the way.

“All those who trespass must pay the price.” Came the low voice

Kaoru shifted her legs as she continued to stare out the window not really seeing the outside. Her eyes held a far off look as her brow dipped down in thought. She was still trying to figure out her dream picking the images apart one by one. Recognizing some of them while questioning others. Like the ones with Kenshin and the strange woman in them, along with the young boy.

`Who was she? Someone I'm supposed to know or maybe someone I saw before.'

Sighing she tilted her head letting it rest on the palm of her hand.

`Where those memories or just dreams and if they were memories whose were they? This is so confusing…why does it feel like I know her.'

Sniffling she turned away from the window and let her head rest on the seat her blue eyes staring blankly up at the ceiling while her fingers picked at the seat.

`Well who ever she is she sure liked to get herself killed. All of those images were of her dying. O Kami! Does that mean…no can't be… probably just something I ate or maybe it was from when I read that file.'

--

Kenshin watched Kaoru as she shifted around in her seat, her face showing her deep in thought causing him to worry about her again. He still wasn't sure what was wrong and that was bothering him not to mention the fact she didn't want him near her or to touch her. It was evident in the way she tried to control her body from jerking away every time he moved to touch her or when he was near her.

Absently he rubbed his chest trying to rid himself of the faint pain there. His violet eyes staying locked on her form as he tired to figure out what was wrong with her. He was snapped from his musings when Sano's voice reached his ears.

“Is everything all right with missy back there?”

Violet quickly met with brown before shifting back to stare at the young woman in the back.

“I'm not sure. She won't tell me.”

Sano stared at Kenshin for a moment before grinning.

“Ok what did you do this time.”

“What?” came the confused reply

“Well the last time she was like this was because of `this unworthy one'…or did you forget?”

Sano peered over to see Kenshin frown a soft sigh escaping his lips as he shook his head.

“Iie, I did not forget.” He whispered as he glanced once more at the sorrowful young woman.

Misao cried out as her body slammed against the rock wall, a whirl of dust rising up from the impact. She fell down her body hitting the ground with a thump, pushing up on her arms she tried to get up only to find the edge of cold steal pressed against her throat.

Slowly lifting her gaze she followed the blade up towards the hilt where she let it trace the dark outline before stopping to stare into a pair of cool brown eyes. Keeping her eyes locked on him she let her fingers slide up her side before gradually slipping her hand inside her pocket making sure not to move around much.

She could feel Aoshi even before she could see him and if her skill at ki signature was any good then his was pissed. Licking her lips she grabbed the kunai she had left and gripped them in her hand. She watched as the figure looked away to their left, brown eyes glowing as they spotted the other figure behind them.
“Death to those who wish to disturb this place.” Came the raspy voice

Misao watched as Aoshi stalked closer the sound of his blades moving reaching her ears. Glancing back up at her attacker she noticed he was still watching Aoshi, seeing her only chance she let her foot slip as she fell backwards, the edge of the sword nicking her skin as she fell way letting her kunai fly as she went.

The small metal daggers ripping through the air and hitting their intended target. She grinned when she heard them hit flesh. Quickly moving she propelled her body towards the cave wall, Aoshi coming to stand between her and the shadow.

Misao watched as he moved to strike the shadow her eyes flying open as she felt the wall giving way her mouth open to cry out only to have the sound muffled as a dark hand covered her mouth.

When he heard Misao's strangled cry he whirled around to see another shadow coming out of the wall trying to pull her back in with it. Forgetting about the one before him he moves towards her grabbing her outstretched hand with his own. Digging his feet into the ground to gain leverage he grabs her other arm and pulls.

She can feel where the wall disappears and the shadow begins, the coldness the surrounds her causes little shivers to run up her spine. Struggling against the shadow she holds onto Aoshi to keep from falling into the darkness. She can feel herself moving backwards her grip slipping as the shadow slowly swallows her up.

Jade green eyes stare hopelessly at him her eyes pleading with him to let her go lest he be swallowed along with her. Growling he tightens his grip his hands moving and wrapping around her waist, his face now only a breath away from her own. Luminescent blue eyes stare out down into pools of deep green, the pain at the thought of loosing her now gives him the strength to continue the struggle.

Deep brown eyes watch as the vampire fights with the darkness trying to consume the young human, his ki flaring up to reach out to her. Tilting its head to the side the shadow watches a few moments longer before re-sheathing its sword.

Misao can feel the darkness as it pushes against her, a heavy feeling pressing against her chest making it hard to breath. Her mind starting to go numb while her body grows colder then suddenly she can feel it drawing away. Gradually the warmth is coming back to her and she can feel the weight being lifted her lungs filling themselves with air again.

Rapidly blinking her eyes back into focus she notices a pair of familiar blue eyes staring down at her. Grinning she brushes her fingers across his jaw before letting herself be lifted up.

“Strangers there is no doubt but stranger still are you two itself.”

“Hun?” came the confused reply from Misao

Aoshi only stared back at the shadow his grip tightening around Misao's waist as he pulled her closer. His eyes narrowing as he watched the figure begin to emerge from the constant shadow surrounding him. Misao could only stare in shock at the person standing before her. Her minding trying to register how it could be possible.
