Chapter 2
2: Renegade

A/N: I seriously thought about NOT updating this story. However, the temptation was too great!

Dust from the wasteland came up in a thick cloud, preventing anyone from miles around to see the heavy action within it.

“I can't see anything!” Kazuma complained as he rushed into the dust. Just when he reached the center of the excitement, someone or something had rammed into him, sending him into Ryuhou's chest. “Son of a bitch!” He exclaimed and quickly regained his composure from toppling into his rival. “I wonder if that kid is alright.” He frantically scanned the dust cloud as it started to settle and the riot had calmed. “Hey, kid!”

Ryuhou took a few steps past Kazuma and paused. A faint outline of a human started to approach him through the floating grime, causing him to back up and stand beside the younger alter. “Put up your guard, Kazuma. He may be an enemy.”

They both watched as the stranger lifted his left arm out and swung it to the side swiftly. The dust suddenly departed, dissolving like ashes in water. Stunned silence fell upon the three alters suddenly and lifeless bodies on the ground. A shift in the breeze made the visitor flinch. He slid his right foot forward slightly indicating he was ready for any assault from the other two.

Kazuma was the first to break the threatening silence. “Hey, Ryuhou, did you have a kid? He looks like you.” He started laughing. “And here I thought you didn't have time to raise a family.”

Ryuhou grunted. “Are you out of it? Where in the world have I got the time to have sex with a woman so I could produce a child?” He examined the teen nervously. “Besides, he has an arm like yours. How do we know he's not yours?”

The younger alter practically chocked on his tongue. “That's not even funny!” He took a sidelong glance at the stranger and smirked. “My alter is in my right arm. His is in his left. He also sports your colors, purple, and black so there!”

The teen's eyebrow twitched in irritation from the other two alters discussing whose kid he belonged to as if he wasn't even there. “Enough,” he demanded. “Who are you? What are your names?” He approached Kazuma and Ryuhou without a second thought and stood before them with a stern expression.

“You have some nerve, kid, talking to us like that,” Kazuma scorned. “Talk to us properly and we might answer you.”

The teen's eyes softened in realization. He bowed his head in apology. “I'm sorry. Forgive me. I've just had a rough day.”

Kazuma smiled broadly. “It's alright. We know how you feel because we've been through the same thing you have. However, it isn't polite to ask the other person's name without telling yours first.”

The young alter straightened himself to make eye contact with the other two. “I'm Ryuma. Please to meet you. Now may I know your names?” He asked more gently, adding a small smile for effect.

Ryuhou blinked. “Ryuma? What kind of name is that?” No one carried the Ryu name unless he or she was related to the Ryu name. “Do you have a history with the Ryu heritage?”

Ryuma shook his head. “I didn't know I was supposed to be part of it.” He winced in pain and gazed at his left arm in apprehension. With a quick contemplation, it disappeared, replacing it with his human arm. He sighed in relief when the pain vanished. “I'm sorry…my alter…it sometimes hurts.”

Kazuma stared at the teen with consideration. “Come on kid. You've had a hard day. We'll get you some food, a hot shower, and a place to sleep. How's that sound?”

It sounded excessively good to Ryuma. “I would like that a lot.” It's been a while since he had any kind of relaxation and a descent meal. How long? Since his fifth birthday? Oh, yeah, that's right. He sighed with exhaustion. `I'm…so tired…' He thought as he closed his eyes and leaned forward. He then lost his balance. “So…very tired,” he mumbled before landing in Ryuhou's arms.

“He fainted,” Ryuhou gasped, as if he thought the teen had chosen his support instead of Kazuma's.

“Well that was rude. He passed out before we could even tell him our names.” Kazuma chuckled as he took the teen from Ryuhou's arms and held him bridal style. “By the way. What was the deal with that whole `Ryu heritage' thing? Why does it matter?”

Ryuhou shook his head. “Forget about it. Come on. Let's get him cleaned and into a bed.” He walked pass Kazuma, shoving him gently. He smiled when he heard a growl and a more or less colorful word. “Idiot.”

“Ryuhou? Maybe this kid IS related to you. I mean, look at his hair and face. He looks almost exactly like you.” Kazuma pointed out. “And his hair is so soft.” He purred as he stroked his cheek against the green locks. “Just like yours.”

The older alter kept himself from blushing as he peered over his shoulder at his rival whom was making himself cozy with the teen. “Stop that! You're going to give him nightmares.”

“He's not even awake,” Kazuma argued teasingly. “So how will he know that I was enjoying his soft hair?” He noted the teen's ponytail hanging over his arm and smiled. “I wonder if he'd get upset if I chopped his hair off.”

Ryuhou rolled his eyes. “I hope you're joking, Kazuma.” He felt a strange vibration through his body. It was hot and unwelcoming. Was he envious of the teen? Why should he be? He had everything the teen had…except youth. However, would that matter to Kazuma? He sighed in disgust with himself. “We're almost to the village. You had better stop molesting him before everyone thinks you're a pedophile.” He laughed when he heard another vibrant word directed at him by the younger alter.

“Kazu-kun!” Kanami exclaimed excitedly as she approached them with a bright smile.

“Stop calling me that!” Kazuma demanded for what seemed like the hundred millionth time.

“Who's that?” Kanami asked, completely ignoring his command. “He looks like Ryu-kun.”

Ryuhou flinched from the comment. “He does not!” He shouted, finally fed up with it.

“See?” Kazuma chirped. “I'm not the only one that thinks Ryuma looks like you.”

“I'm going to see Mimori.” Ryuhou stated, wanting nothing more to do with them and their mockery. “Make sure you take care of him, Kazuma.” He gave a small wave before retreating to find his childhood friend.

Kanami ran her fingers through the teen's bangs that completely concealed his right eye, and brushed them aside. “Poor thing. He looks so beat up.” She suddenly looked up at Kazuma and frowned. “You two didn't do this to him, did you?” Her eyes became watery with assumption.

Kazuma shook his head frantically. “No, he was in a battle with someone else, I swear. Ryuhou and I were just bringing him back for some recuperation.”

She seemed to have bought it when she grabbed him around his neck and hugged him. “That's good Kazu-kun! I'd hate to think you would have done this to a kid.” She released her grip and pulled away. “Come on. He can rest at my place.”

“Thanks, Kanami,” Kazuma obliged and followed her to her home.

A/N: Gee! I wonder what will happen to Ryuma. Will Ryuhou finally commit his feelings to Kazuma? Hell if I know. ^^; I'm just writing as I go. Fun, isn't it?
