Makoto's secret
By Anita C.
Makoto looked through the window. She loved to watch the raindrops bouncing of the glass. It was one of the few things that helped her relax. Being a sailor senshi wasn't easy. She was constantly exposed to danger. A lot of times she came close to being killed. She did die once, but thanks to Sailor Moon's wonderful powers she was reborn again. She loved her job and she wouldn't trade it for anything else in the whole world. Well, maybe there was one thing she would consider giving it up for: love. Yes, she wanted to be loved, just like everybody else. So far she didn't have much luck. The only boyfriend she ever had broke up with her without giving a reason. That scarred her poor heart for good. Now every young, cute guy would remind her of her first love. She always found something that the boy and her ex-boyfriend had in common, would it be the eyes, hair, or just the way they spoke. And yet, were they really looking similar? Or was it just sort of a guard from falling in love and getting hurt again? She didn't know. One thing she knew, she wanted to find someone, who would cherish her and love her with all his pure heart. But where was she going to find him?
The phone rang suddenly snatching her out of her dreams.
"Hello?" she picked it up after a moment of hesitation.
"Makoto" she heard a familiar voice. "There is a new demon running around town." She shrugged. They just took care of one. Aren't they ever going to get rid off this pest? "Come quick!" continued the voice. "We'll meet you at the temple." Makoto hung up and grabbed her transformation stick. Usually she had it with her all the time, but when she was trying to relax she always put it to the side. It didn't take her long to get to the temple. Not only was she the strongest of the senshi, but also the fastest. Or at least she was until the new senshi, Sailor Uranus, showed up.
The other girls were waiting. They quickly gave her a brief summary of what happened and everybody took off to search for the new demon. They knew the probable location of the monster. They didn't have to look for it too long. Screams of the victim led them right to the spot. They saw a tall creature all covered in brown fur. It had strange-shaped horns on its head. Its hands had pikes growing out of the knuckles. It had a tail, which ended with crab-like claw. It was another heart snatcher, but then again they didn't expect anything else. The monster was leaning over the newest victim of the Dead Busters. The man was unconscious. The girls didn't wait long. First to attack was Sailor Mars. The monster jumped out of the fire's path. Sailor Venus was already waiting for it with her chain. She captured it, but the monster snapped the chain like it was a hair, that anybody could break. It leaped towards Sailor Moon. At first she didn't know what to do. She was totally paralyzed with fear. When the monster got close enough to grab her, a bright red rose hit it in the face. The creature stopped in its track. It looked around confused. By the time it decided it wasn't anything to worry about, Sailor Moon had already whipped her wand out and destroyed the monster. A beautiful heart crystal was floating in the air in the exact place where the monster used to stand. Sailor Moon picked it up gently and returned to its rightful owner.
Sailor Jupiter looked around to make sure everything was back to normal. In the nearby trees she noticed two shadows. She didn't have to think hard to know who it was. Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune were always there whenever a monster showed up. Nobody knew who they were, and if they were on the same side as the rest of the senshi. Or were they enemies? Sailor Jupiter woke up from her thoughts. People started to gather around to see what was going on. It was time to withdraw from the battlefield. When the girls got out of site they all transformed back. They were all soaking wet from the rain, so everybody decided to go straight home.
The next day Makoto went to the Crown. Usagi was already there, as usual.
"Mako-chan!" she exclaimed happily. Makoto nodded in response. They sat down at the newest Sailor V game. Yes, they still produced the games, even though Sailor V ceased to exist. Makoto got all involved in it. She didn't even hear when others walked in. Suddenly she felt somebody's hand on her shoulder. She turned around and looked up at Haruka. The tall blond girl smiled at her.
"How is it going, Mako-chan?" Makoto blushed. Haruka wasn't dressed in her usual school uniform. She wore white men's shirt with a dark purple vest. The collar of the shirt was up covering part of a purple bandana around her neck. She had tight black pants and black biker boots on. She looked very tomb-boyish, and yet very feminine. Makoto was taken by her looks. She didn't even notice Michiru standing right next to her.
"Hey, what's the matter?" Haruka giggled "Don't you recognize me?" Makoto lowered her eyes and blushed even more.
"N… no…, I mean, y… yes…, I mean…" Makoto stuttered. Michiru put her elbow into Haruka's side causing her to flinch. Usagi was looking at that with suspicion. She remembered the last time Makoto fell for Haruka. She almost lost her pure heart that day. Then again, Usagi was pretty certain, Makoto learned her lesson. Thinking that, Usagi said good bye and left the arcade in a hurry. She suddenly remembered she was supposed to be home "five minutes ago".
Haruka patted Mako's back. "Well, we got to run too. See you later!" She turned around offering Michiru a shoulder. Makoto lifted her face and watched them disappear outside. Her heart was pounding like she just ran a marathon. She got up on her wobbly legs and slowly went to the door. When she finally managed to get outside, she looked around hoping to see Haruka, but the two girls were gone. Makoto was disappointed. She started to walk home. She was surprised with her reaction to Haruka's smile and looks. She wasn't sure what to think of it. It was different than last time. Before it was just a crash, an innocent admiration, and now she felt something more, something she felt only once, long time ago.
"No, it can't be." She whispered to herself. "Haruka is a girl." She tried to reason with herself "She IS a very handsome girl." She shook her head. "What am I thinking? There are no handsome girls, there are pretty girls, and handsome boys. And I definitely like handsome boys better." She stopped walking for a second "Or do I really?" She thought of all the times she fell in love with this boy and that boy, and they all broke her heart. Maybe it was time to turn somewhere else. Most of the boys didn't even notice she existed, or were intimidated by Makoto's height. And Haruka did. Makoto was considering all the traits the blond girl had. She was smart, and handsome, "There is that word again." She thought, but this time she thought it fitted. Haruka was quite handsome. She had the charm, and sense of humor. And she definitely knew what a girl needed. Makoto smiled. She still felt Haruka's hand on her back. The tall blond girl was strong. It was definitely a plus. Makoto never met anybody that was stronger than her. Haruka could easily measure up. Yes, Haruka was for her. Makoto had no idea how she was going to go about it. She couldn't just walk up to the girl and tell her how she felt, but she wasn't sure what other ways there were to show affection. She didn't have much experience when it came to hitting on a girl. And then there was still Michiru. Makoto frowned at that thought. They did seem to have a close relationship, Haruka and Michiru, but how close were they. Makoto decided to follow her heart. And with that thought she entered her apartment.
Makoto woke up with a strong headache, a runny nose and a sore throat. She tried to get up on her feet, but she fell right back on her pillow. She touched her forehead. It was scorching. "I guess standing in the rain two days ago is finally coming out." She thought trying to figure out what to do. She slowly got up on her elbows. Her head started to spin. She thought she was going to fall back, but she held up and a few long minutes later she finally set up on the bed. Makoto slowly turned her head looking for something to support herself on. She didn't find anything usable, so she got on her hands and knees, and crawled over to the phone. She felt sicker by the minute. When she finally got to the phone the first person she thought about calling was Haruka. She looked up her phone number yesterday before she went to bed. She could still remember it. It took some effort to dial the numbers, but she succeeded and soon she heard a familiar voice on the other side.
"Hello?"
"Help" Makoto's sore throat gave up on her for a moment.
"Who's this?" Haruka sounded rather puzzled.
"Mako….." Makoto couldn't finish the name. Everything got black in front of her eyes and she fainted. When she finally woke up she was lying in her own bed. She didn't remember how she got there. She wasn't sure how long she'd been unconscious either. She looked around. The door to her bedroom opened and in stepped Haruka carrying a bowl of something in her hand. The miso soup was still steaming. Haruka smiled. "Sorry I busted your door." She apologized. "I rushed over here right after you stopped answering. I couldn't get the door open so I rammed it." For a moment a faint grin lit up Makoto's face. She nodded in response. Haruka set down on the bed and started feeding the hot soup to poor Mako-chan. She couldn't take more but few spoons. Haruka put a fresh compress on Makoto's forehead. It brought a nice relief to the sick girl and soon Makoto fell asleep. She slept for a long time.
Makoto opened her eyes. It was the middle of the night. She looked around. At first she thought Haruka left, but soon she heard another person's breathing. She lifted her head, it still felt heavy, but it wasn't hurting as bad. Haruka was lying on the floor by Makoto's bed. Seeing that brought tears into the lonely girl's eyes. She quickly swallowed them and laid back down. She felt happy. The only thing she wished for right now was that that moment would last forever. She slowly settled down for a long and restful sleep.
Makoto woke up to the sound of a soft music. . She heard somebody in the kitchen and she opened her eyes. After a short while Haruka showed up in the door with a cup of tea.
"Morning" she smiled at Makoto. "I hope you're feeling better. You've been sleeping for a long time." Makoto tried using her throat. "What…. " She coughed "What time is it?"
"It's about three o'clock, you sleepy head." Haruka laughed helping Makoto sit up. Makoto still felt a little dizzy, but the fever was gone. She looked at Haruka and blushed. "Thank you…" she started. Her throat was still a little achy. "… for everything…" Haruka put her finger on Makoto's lips. "Shhh" she almost whispered, and with a mysterious smile on her face got up from the bed. She walked up to the door and turned around.
"I have to go now." Makoto felt her heart sink. "Michiru probably worries about me by now." She winked "She's not sure if she can trust us." Makoto blushed. Seeing that, Haruka giggled. "Well, take care of yourself." She said and left the room.
Moment later Makoto heard the front door close. She felt like crying. Just last night she thought that her and Haruka bonded. "Did I do something wrong?" she wondered, but she couldn't think of anything she'd done or rather didn't do that would offend the other girl. She lowered her head on her chest. Just then she noticed that her nightshirt had changed. All the blood in Makoto's body rushed into her face. "She saw me," She thought feverish. "She saw me naked." A wave of shame and happiness flooded her body. She knew she had a nice figure, she matured faster than other girls did her age. Makoto got up from her bed. She slowly walked over to the mirror. She pulled the nightshirt tightly around her waist. She smiled at what she saw. She definitely had something to show.
Makoto started to feel lightheaded again. She turned around and went back to bed.
