Misunderstandings

AN: I've had a lot of trouble with this story lately so I could really use some useful comments.

Rini sat on the window seat with her knees to her chest looking outside. "Do you want to tell me about it?" Hortaru asked as she sat beside her.

"I did something stupid and I'm afraid I'll do it again," she answered.

Hortaru sighed at the abbreviated version of the story. It loosely translated to she slept with her ex again. That must have been why she was so upset at the club. "I wish you would tell me more about him so I could help you. I don't even know his name or what he looks like."

"He's an ass that's all there is to it," she replied simply, "and it's so good that I can't say no to him. I hate him so much!"

"Rini…"

"It's really pathetic Ta-chan. I hate him and he hates me, but we go at it like bunnies every time we see each other. I've cheated on every boyfriend I've had since I met the jerk and it keeps going. I can't stop and it's stupid. He's the only one who gets me going."

"Really?" Hortaru asked. She never knew that detail.

Rini nodded. "And he knows it too. I know he does," she said narrowing her eyes then smiled. "The only good thing is he's obsessed too. He will suffer by me giving him up too." She stood and stretched. "I feel better now."

"Well that's good. You won't have any more clothes if this keeps up," she smirked.

Rini smiled. "Thank you for listening to me, Ta-chan. I know I can be difficult sometimes."

"Very," Hortaru said dryly then snickered at the wide-eyed look on her best friend's face. "You're a good kid."

"Whatever," Rini smiled wrinkling her nose. There was a three-year age difference between the two of them. "Enough about my psycho social life, tell me about what happened between you and that guy…Dima was it?"

She blushed. "He's really cute, but he's just a friend."

"Oh come on, Ta-chan, that guy was all up on you on the dance floor."

"No he wasn't. He was actually nice. We talked a lot and traded e-mails."

"Oh," she commented deflated. "Just as well. Meeting guys at clubs rarely turns out well anyway. Trust me I know."

"I think he's interested in you," Hortaru said nonchalantly. "We've been e-mail each other the last couple of days and he's asked me about you, subtly of course."

"He's cute," Rini admitted, "but I'd only end up hurting him and he seems more your type, Ta-chan."

"Oh well," she sighed. "I tried." She stood. "Come on we have to go to the mall."

"Why?" she asked.

"You forgot about tomorrow didn't you?"

Rini's eyes darted around as she tried to think when it suddenly hit her. "Zoe's tenth birthday."

Hortaru nodded. "Haruka-poppa would be pissed if you forgot, not to mention Zoe. You know how much she loves you."

"I'll go get changed then we can go."

========

Rini came out of the bakery with the cake that Lita made for Zoe's birthday party. She was running a little late with another order and wanted to make sure that the birthday girl got her cake on time. Rini was only too glad to help. Zoe was her pal, plus it allowed her to scope out the cake first. Lita had out done herself with this time. The cake was adorned with the marzipan and plastic figurines. It almost looked too pretty to cut, but it was also a chocolate cake and most of their friends had a weakness for chocolate. "All safe," she whispered as she placed the cake on the car floor. She did not want it sliding onto the floor.

"Nice," a male voice complimented staring at her derrière.

Rini frowned as she sat up. Her frown deepened further when she saw that it was Nephrite. She said nothing and quickly walked around her car to get inside. She did not want to find out how strong she was and it was Zoe's party. She could not be late.

"You're not going to even speak?" he asked watching her. "No matter were too intimate for that anyway." He grabbed her arm before she could get away. "Aren't we?" he asked trying to kiss her.

"Think about Zoe. Think about Zoe." She pushed him away. "I told you that was the last time."

Nephrite raised an eyebrow. He was not going to take no for an answer if he did not have to. "You and I both know that we'll never be able to let go."

It was Rini's turn to raise an eyebrow. "There's someone else in my life and he makes me happy. I don't need you."

"Now why don't I believe you," he challenge.

Rini narrowed her eyes. She then saw a familiar handsome blond coming out of the shop next to the bakery. "Perfect timing," she thought as she pushed passed Nephrite. "Dima, sweetheart," she called out as she grabbed his hand.

Diamond turned his head in surprise but had the insight to smile at Rini. "What are you doing here?" he asked.

"I'm picking up the cake for the party, remember?" she asked giving him a pleading look with her eyes. "I missed you." She kissed him deeply. She felt him tense in surprise then relax enough to wrap his arms around her slender waist. "Not bad,"she thought as she pulled away from him. "We better get going if we're going to make the party," she replied pulling him to the car and ushering him in before Nephrite could say anything. Dima stepped in carefully and buckled his seatbelt. He was sure everything would be explained soon enough, but he would go with it. Rini got into the driver's seat and they sped off.

"Care to explain?" he asked as they whizzed along.

Rini's cheeks flushed slightly. Getting into trouble seemed to be a trait that she could never get rid of. "I am sorry to get you into that. My ex was trying to come on to me and I…"

"You needed some help fending him off?" he supplied. She nodded embarrassed. "I understand."

"I'm really sorry, Dima," she began, "right now he's just a little hard to resist and I…you don't want to hear about my problems. I've already done enough. I have to drop this cake off for a party then I'll take you back so you can get your car."

"It's okay and thanks," he replied giving her a warm smile. She really was beautiful. Perhaps this situation was the opportunity that he needed to get closer. "You do realize that you owe me."

Crimson eyes shifted flirtatiously. "Oh really and what can I do to make it up to you?"

"Let me see you have ruined my single status for awhile," he commented. "I would say at least two dates."

"Wouldn't that make it worse?" she asked teasing him.

"I could get over it," he answered.

Rini smiled. She had to give points on originality. "It's only two dates and who knows we might have fun," she thought as they pulled up to a house with several cars in front. They got out of the car. "It's a deal."

"Good," he replied. He was elated that he would have the opportunity to get to know this angel. Rini walked over to his side of the car and started to pick up the cake. "I have it." He lifted the cake and started for the house.

"Thank you," she said as she shut the car door and went to the trunk. Normally she would have protested his gesture, but she still had to get Zoe's present out of the trunk. Now she could save herself the extra trip. She opened the trunk just as an another car pulled up and everyone in the house came out. Her smile vanished as she saw Nephrite step out casually. She couldn't believe he actually followed her.

"Nephrite, I'm glad you could make it," Zoicite greeted as he walked up with Zoe.

"I had to pick up something for the birthday girl," he winked as he handed her a small box. Zoe smiled and kissed him on the cheek.

"Thank you, Uncle Neph."

"Oh god," Rini whispered lowly as she felt he knees becoming weak. Nephrite was the Uncle that traveled abroad that Zoe talked about so much. That would explain why it was far and between when they had their encounters.

"I don't know if I candle this," she thought. A strong arm circled around her waist and she looked casually towards Dima who smiled. She felt her strength returning from his gesture of kindness. She could do this, all she had to do was make sure that she was never alone with him, but that would mean keeping Dima a bit longer. He was being such a good sport about everything. "I guess everyone's here," Rini commented, "except Lita."

Rei smirked. "Serena and Darien aren't here yet."

Rini laughed lightly to clear the air. "Well you know how she is? I'm sure she forgot something at the last minute and they had to turn around."

"We'll give her a few minutes," Haruka commented then smiled. She knew everyone was dying to know who Rini's guest was and it was about time she had the chance to dish out some of the embarrassing questions. "So who's your friend?"

"This is my…" Rini began. She knew this was going to bite her in the ass some time.

"I'm Dima, Rini's boyfriend," he greeted pulling her close to him.
