CHALLENGE: You did WHAT?!? And take the story from there.

Part Two - Out of Tune
"You did WHAT?!"
"There's no need to shout."
"I have every reason to shout, Mother. I'm angry!"
"And I understand why. But if you would just listen...."
"No, I will not!"
"Maria...."
"Don't stand there and use that tone with me. I am no longer a child! And I did not pour my heart out to you to have you use it against me!"
"You asked me for help."
"I asked you to LISTEN. I didn't expect you to understand. Or comment. I just needed to vent."
"Your father and I worry about you."
"And that's great. I'm glad that you care. Happy even. But that's no reason for you to keep me and my son as prisoners in your home. Oh, you've tried to be understanding. Tried to be accepting. But I know now it's all been a lie!"
"No, it hasn't. We just want you to be happy."
"I AM happy. I love Yuki. I love our son. It's just...."
"Just what?"
Maria Toudo sighed, uncertain if she'd already said too much. "Frustrating, Mother. His long absences, his busy schedule. It's frustrating."
"I...didn't realize you're father would act so strongly, Maria. For that, I am sorry. But we didn't lie to you about your grandfather."
"That's why I'm here. I came here to see grandpa. I know he's ill and I wanted him to see Yukihiko just once before he passes on. I wanted to see him again because I wasn't sure if I would get another chance.
"Do you even know what I've had to give up to be here? I had to miss a major exam for one of my classes. I had to cancel Yukihiko's next doctor's appointment. I'm obviously skipping work to be here, too. Do not ask me to give up my husband."
"We're not."
"By keeping me here...yes, you are. I haven't even been allowed to contact him. He should've been home last night and I'm sure he's worried sick."
"Dear, how many times do you want me to apologize?"
"Till I believe you."
Her mother sighed, nodding. "I don't know what else to say."
"Say that I can call him. Say that I can get out of the house today. I've only been here for two days, but...if I'm not a prisoner, then I want to go out, even if it's just to the street corner."
"But what about our discussion the other night?"
"I was just in a mood. Why wouldn't I be? I just found out that not only is my grandfather dying, but my father doesn't want me to go home."
Her mother nodded. "There will always be frustration, dear. Believe me." Smooth fingertips caressed her daughter's face and she sighed again. "I can't promise you about leaving the compound today. But I can give you this." Reaching into her kimono, she pulled out a cell phone. "Your father has gone through your voicemail I'm sure, but at least you can call Yukifumi and tell him you're okay."
"Thanks, mom." Maria smiled happily, the tears in her eyes a combination of fear, frustration, anger and happiness. Full of emotion, she hugged the older woman. With another sigh, this one full of relief, she embraced her daughter tightly.
"Sounds like someone is finished his nap. I'll take care of him. You have a phone call to make."
Maria was beaming as her mother left the room. She immediately dialed her husbands cell phone, not trusting him to be at home. He had to be worried, possibly freaked out by the fact that she and Yukifumi were missing. She couldn't wait to hear his voice.
His voicemail, though, was a lousy replacement.
"Hi honey! I'm at my parent's place, looking after my grandfather. The doctor's don't expect him to live much longer. I'm sorry I couldn't be there when you got home. There are some leftovers in the fridge, and there are some portfolio statements for you to review on the desk. I miss you...WE miss you. And love you. I'll talk to you again soon."
It wasn't until after she hung that she realized several things. First, she made no mention of him coming to join her. It hadn't really crossed her mind. She would love to see him. It had been far too long! But she knew that he would be busy, even if it wasn't something for the band.
Secondly, she made no mention of her argument with her parents. That she was being held prisoner was an exaggeration, she knew, but that's just how she felt. Still, it was a conversation she had with her mother that started the misunderstanding. While it would be nice to see him tear into the home to see her once again -- oh what a fond memory! -- she was determined to solve her own problems.
And speaking of problems, she had come to her parent's house in hopes of sorting out some painful emotions. Some might say she was running away from her problems, but it was difficult to runaway from what wasn't physically there.
Which is why she made no mention of when she might be home.
It hurt, knowing he was there and she was not. Her heart felt like it would explode. Even Yukihiko was sad. Not because his great grandfather was dying, but because he hadn't gotten to see his father in nearly two months. Well, see him in person. They watched the concerts when they were televised and tried to catch every TV spot and interview they could.
But...it wasn't the same as having him there in person.
She was proud of her husband. Lucifer was his life as much as his family. Devoted father and hard working musician are difficult roles to play. But he always came home to her. Always.
So why did she feel so frustrated?
Since Lucifer had gone global, his schedule practically tripled. He was either in meetings, in rehearsals, in the studio, or on the road. Their exposure was bringing in more and more fans. Album sales were through the roof, and their latest single was charming women both young and old.
No matter how busy he was, he always came home. Always. She loved waking up next to him, even if she couldn't remember what time he came in. She loved being able to kiss him goodbye in the mornings. He did his best to take care of her and their son.
But when she needed him most, the house felt empty.
It was empty.
It just wasn't enough anymore.
She needed him to be there. Her classes took up more of her time. Granted she only took 12 credits, it was one night online and two classroom session each week. Homework wasn't anything new but she was out of practice. And was it really necessary to take classes she remembered from high school?
Add to that the 20 to 25 hours she spent working at a local flower shop. She thought she would build her education around her job because she loved it so much. There was just something...relaxing...about working with flowers.
Her own schedule was much more ambitious and things that once got done with ease remained undone for days, sometimes weeks, at a time.
She needed help and he was not around.
She would never hate her husband for being who he was. He was pursuing a dream. She wanted to be a part of that dream, be as supportive of him as he was of her. Secretly she loved that her husband was one of the hottest rock stars around. It gave her chills when she'd see him during a performance. Not to mention the naughty thoughts she often had of him, especially in leather pants.
She was simply...overwhelmed.
"Maria...could you help me please?"
And there were few outlets for her.
"Coming, mom!"
Now that she had her cell phone again, perhaps another call would be in order. This time to someone she knew she could trust. Someone who could identify with her feelings. Who would understand and perhaps be able to give her the advice she needed.
"Maria!? Where did you put Yukihiko's diaper bag?"
But the call would have to wait until after her son had a clean diaper and some lunch.
