Part Three - Drowning Melody
"How long has he been like that?"
"Going on two and a half hours now."
"Is he all right? I mean, she called and left him a message, right?"
"Two days ago, you idiot."
"I'd die if I couldn't be with my girl for this long."
"Would help if you had a girl, Towa."
"Shut up, Santa. You're in no better of a situation."
"Says you!"
"What do you think, Sakuya?"
Sakuya Ookochi tuned out his fellow band mates and concentrated his thoughts on his best friend. Yukifumi Toudo had been...out of sorts...for the past few days. He found his wife and son mysteriously missing. His wife was attending to a sick relative -- or so he learned the next day after returning home from a concert tour.
Sakuya himself had only gotten in and was in the process of relaxing with his girlfriend when the phone rang. He told Aine not to answer it, but she did. There was a strange look on her face when she handed the phone to Sakuya.
"I think it's Yuki," she whispered.
"Hello? Yuki?"
Yuki had been frantic, raving like a lunatic. Who could blame him? His house was empty and there was no sign of his wife or son. Sakuya's attempts to calm him down did little and he finally agreed to go over and see him in person.
"Is he all right?' Aine asked as he began getting dressed.
"No." He kissed her deeply before dragging himself to the door.
"Do you need me to call anyone?"
Sakuya shook his head. "I should be back soon."
When he arrived at the Toudo home, he found his friend in the living room, collapsed somewhere between the couch and the floor. He'd known Yuki to be emotional, but to see the man cry? He hadn't done that since his son was born.
He really had no idea what to do for Yuki. Except to just be there. When it came to their friendship, Sakuya was not the voice of reason. Hell he was usually the one receiving consoling remarks and gestures from HIM. Sure he could be rational, but there was nothing that could be said. No reassurances he could offer.
Especially when he'd gone and done much worse to his girlfriend.
His presence did seem to help, though. Yuki muttered through his thoughts until they managed to have a conversation. He'd left a message. It was the most he could do. But he looked so pitiful that Sakuya felt he needed to do more.
He called Aine and said he'd be home once he was certain Yuki was okay.
That meant spending the day with him to make sure.
"I have a few errands to run anyway. Just call me if you need me," she'd replied.
After a much-needed nap for both of them, both members of Lucifer decided to go out for lunch. Sakuya was surprised that Yuki let him drive his car. The vehicle was his friend's second child! There were only a few mishaps, but no accidents. Sakuya hadn't even realized he was nervous until he parked the car. He sighed, releasing his death grip on the steering wheel.
"Don't worry. I'll drive home," Yuki commented with a shadow of a smile.
"Good idea."
Yuki selected the place, not too fancy, but not commonplace either. Great sushi, or so he'd heard. The host on duty knew exactly who they were. Apparantly his daughter was a big fan. And his wife. He escorted them back ahead of the several people already waiting and seated them at the best table available. Both of them were surprised but didn't complain.
Treated like kings, they ate, drank and made small talk. Conversation revolved mostly around the band, the previous tour and their upcoming album. There were a few personal comments as well, mostly in regards to their lyricist and how Sakuya was treating her in hopes of several great songs.
"It hurts me more," Sakuya commented when Yuki jibbed him about it. "Besides, Aine writes some great stuff when she's deprived of sex."
"Too bad it makes your performance on stage less than preferable."
"I always give my best!"
Yuki sighed. "I know."
"She'll call you when she can," Sakuya said. "In the meantime, we need to keep you busy."
"What do you mean, 'we'?"
With the meal paid for and a nice tip left for their waitress, they walked out to the car. Word traveled fast where they were dining, as fans were eagerly waiting to see them. They signed a few autographs, posed for a picture or two, and then excused themselves.
Seated in the car, Yuki in the driver's seat, a cell phone beeped.
"Not mine," Sakuya said, raising his hands. "Check yours."
Through it all, Yuki missed a phone call. His flip phone opened and he pressed a few buttons before holding it up to his ear. There was a moment of silence before he spoke.
"It's from Maria," he'd said with a smile.
Sakuya watched as his friend's face lit up. It was the happiest Yuki had been...possibly ever. But that happiness seemed to fade as he flipped his phone closed and placed it gently on the dashboard.
"So...what did she say?"
Yuki sat back, laying his head against the headrest. "She's taking care of her grandfather. He's...he hasn't been well for a while. He's dying."
"I'm sorry to hear that."
"They were close while she was growing up. He...he was the one person -- at least in my mind -- that was genuinely happy Maria and I married again."
"Really?"
"You know what happened...before...with my father...."
"Yeah, I remember. I thought he was being a dick."
Yuki chuckled. "You and me both. But I understood the situation, and I didn't want Maria to be marred by my decision."
"Despite the fact that she still loved you, and you loved her?"
"Yes, well...we know how that ended up." Yuki smiled at a memory Sakuya couldn't see. "Anyway, her grandfather always supported us one hundred percent. And...he was never afraid to tell me he was proud of me." He sighed. "Even my father can't say that to me."
"Sounds like a great man."
"He is."
"Did she say how long he had?"
"Not long. A day or a little longer."
"Do you plan to visit him?"
"I'm sure Maria's taking good care of him."
"That's not what I--!"
"Do you mind if we head over to the studio?"
"No," Sakuya replied with a shake of his head. "Not at all."
But he didn't forget that his question went unanswered.
What didn't he want to say?
In an effort to help his friend continue to cope, he called each of the other members of the band. They agreed to meet up at the studio. It was more for bullshitting purposes, but they managed to be productive as well. Two days and already it seemed like their next album was close to finished.
But Yuki was still hiding something. Hiding behind the music on purpose. Sakuya wracked his brain trying to sort it out.
"Sakuya? Hey, Sakuya!"
With a sigh, he pressed a button on the soundboard and spoke over the intercom. "Yuki, time to call it a day."
"I've almost got it."
"It can wait until tomorrow."
"No...no. This is good. I'm close...."
"It can wait."
Yuki shook his head vehemently. "No!"
"Get a fucking grip on yourself! Drowning yourself in work won't solve anything!" Sakuya yelled. Yuki paused what he was doing, but didn't look up at his friend. In a calmer tone of voice, he continued, "I would know."
It was Yuki's turn to sigh, relinquishing the guitar in his hands and sitting it back in its stand. With a small grin, the first any of his band mates had seen in days, he turned towards the window.
"I know, you know," he replied.
"You've got some great arrangements, but they can wait," Atsuro added.
"Yeah, the next album isn't due out for another six months," Santa said.
"Plenty of time to wrack the old brain," Towa said.
"And we'll have some new lyrics to work with soon," Sakuya said. "So come on. It's time to get some food."
"Lunch!"
"Don't you mean dinner?"
"Is it that late already?"
As Yuki came out of the recording set, Sakuya put an arm around his friend. He didn't realize it, but this experience was strengthening their friendship. And he could relate. That was always a comfort.
"Yuki, it'll be okay."
"I know," he replied with a nod. "I just miss her. And Yukihiko." He chuckled. "I'm not used to all this stress. This is usually your department."
"About time we see another side of you," Sakuya said with a smile. "We're not superhuman. Even you 'old man'."
Sakuya's smile grew as his friend let out a laugh. There was no retaliation, other than the noogie Yuki attempted to give his friend. Sakuya laughed, too. It really was good to see his friend acting more like himself. But there was still a front. A part he was hiding.
'Yuki, what aren't you telling me?'
Sakuya only hoped Aine could shed more light on the subject.
