Part Four - Refrain of Frustration
'I think this is the place....'
"Aine! Over here!"
Aine looked around to find the person she was meeting.
"Maria! Hello!"
With a little hop in her step, she hurried over to the table where Maria was already seated. Her smile went from ear to ear. She was very happy to see her friend. Especially since she hadn't been home since Lucifer returned home from the second leg of their tour.
"Did you have a problem finding the place, Maria?"
"No, actually."
"I'm glad."
Aine noticed that the girl across from her was also happy to see her, but the smile was not as enthusiastic as hers. Why not? It was Maria that called her and asked to meet with her.
"I really need to talk," she'd said with sadness in her voice.
At first she wanted to meet at Aine's apartment, but it wasn't "safe", or so Aine thought. She had suggested this cafe a few blocks from her school. No one showed up this early in the week and there wouldn't be alot of pressing snooping around. No Yuki or Sakuya, either.
It was nice to have personal time.
"Are you sure you should be skipping class?" Maria asked.
"I'm not too concerned. All the exams are tomorrow and I'm actually caught up, for once."
A waitress came over and Aine ordered a drink. Maria asked for a refill. When she left, Maria asked about school. Aine was only too happy to complain. They made small talk about the weather, local news and anything other than the reason why they were sitting in the cafe. Once the waitress brought their drinks, Aine sucked in a breath and asked the inevitable.
"So what's up, Maria? You sounded sad over the phone."
"Sad, frustrated, hurt, upset...." Maria sighed. "There's a lot going on right now and I feel so overwhelmed."
Aine nodded. "How's your grandfather doing?"
"A priestess is with him now. He's stopped eating and...he looks sickly. Nasty. It's like he's given up. So have the doctors." She used her straw to stir her drink aimlessly. "He'll pass on in the next twenty-four hours. There's no stopping it now."
"I'm so sorry."
"At least he got to see Yukihiko before he passed on." Maria wiped away tears as she attempted to smile. "I think the two of them would've had so much fun together if he'd lived just a little longer." She paused for a moment, blowing her nose in a napkin. "He did say he was disappointed, though."
"Why's that?"
"He was hoping to see Yukifumi. He always did like Yuki, despite the hardship we've been through."
"Did you tell Yuki?" Maria shook her head. "Why not?"
"I'm not sure," she replied honestly. "Lately I've been feeling...I don't know...frustrated."
"Did Yuki say or do something he shouldn't have?" Aine couldn't remember seeing any unpleasant photos of the guys from the tour. Did something happen that she didn't know about? Should she be worried about Sakuya, too?
"No, he didn't. I just...." Maria sighed again, sipping her drink. "I miss him. I miss him a lot. I'm happy Lucifer is getting the recognition they deserve, but...I'm starting to feel...left out."
"Feel like you don't belong?"
"Yes."
Aine's jaw dropped in shock. Did Maria really feel that way? It didn't seem possible! She had always pictured the young mother as a strong person, full of confidence and poise. She never thought she'd feel like this. Like Aine had almost every time Sakuya left her side.
"Like you have no control?"
"Yes."
"Like you would be better off without him?"
"Absolutely not!"
"Then all is not lost," Aine said with a smile. She reached a hand across the table. Laying her hand on top of Maria's she continued, "I know how you feel. Really. And this is going to sound silly, but...it's good that you recognize your feelings. Ignoring them will only make things worse."
Maria grasped Aine's hand tightly. "I know."
"But Yuki has to know about your feelings too. You're not the only one who has to deal with this."
"I know that, too. And I'm so happy you understand." Deep down, that's what Maria had wanted all along. "But...that's not all."
"Huh?"
Taking a deep breath, Maria told her about her talk with her mother. "I thought she would understand," she said. "But then she went to father and told him what had been said." Maria explained the arrangements in the house and how her father was treating her like a child. "He can't keep me there. US. Yukihiko and I WILL go home."
"But your feelings about your marriage are keeping you from leaving?"
"Something like that?" She looked at Aine. "I love Yuki. I know he always come back to me. And I'm extremely grateful! But they've been working so hard, away for long periods of time. I understood what I was getting into when I married him. I have completely trust in my husband, Aine, but.... Am I being childish?"
Aine shook her head. "No. I don't think so."
"You feel the same way about Saku-chan, right?"
Aine laughed. Hearing Maria's nickname for her boyfriend used to anger her. Now it made her giggle. "How did you ever come up with that nickname for Sakuya?"
"You know, I'm not sure." She laughed, too. "Thank you, Aine. I really needed this talk."
"Are you ready to leave?"
"Actually I wanted to do some shopping. Would you like to come with?"
"Yes!"
Anything that kept her out of school today was a good thing. Spending more time with Maria was also a big plus. They rarely spent this much time together. Aine didn't want it to end.
But end it did just after sundown. Maria waved to Aine as they parted. She had promised to call Yuki and talk to him. Maybe get him to come to the house to see her parents. After hearing what had happened the last time, she wasn't sure that was a good idea. But it was a start.
She couldn't wait to go home and tell Sakuya the news. She had promised after all. And when she was done telling him, she would leave him alone for the night. Yuko would so love to hear about that during their sleepover.
Aine felt more empowered now than she had in her entire life.
'Hurts him as much as it hurts me, does it? Let's see how he likes being left alone and frustrated, the bastard.'
