Part Five - Note of Hope
He had been waiting for the phone to ring.
"Yuki, I have bad news."
"He's...gone?"
"Yes."
"When?"
"Last night. I didn't know until this morning."
He knew what news it would bring.
"Will there be...services?"
"Tomorrow. Father is making the preparations right now."
"I...I want to be there. I want to pay my final respects."
"You'll be expected, Yuki. I told father myself."
"And?"
"He didn't say that it would be a problem."
"Good."
He knew they had much to discuss.
"Yuki?"
"Hmm?"
"We...we need to talk. After the services. There are things I need to tell you."
"I know."
"You...do?"
There were problems that needed to be fixed, emotions that needed to be acknowledged.
"It's a talk we should have had a long time ago."
"Yuki...I love you. I need you to believe that."
"I do. And I love you too."
"I miss you."
"I miss you more."
A conclusion wasn't far away. He would have his wife and son back. They would be a happy family once more.
He spent the remainder of the day smiling brightly despite the dire circumstances bringing them together.
"I'm sorry, sir."
But it was difficult to smile now.
"There must be a mistake."
"Nope. No mistake."
"I'm expected."
"Yes...but we're not to let you in."
"Excuse me?"
"I'm sorry, Mr. Toudo. But the master specifically told us not to let you past the gate."
It was difficult to keep his anger under control.
"So I can't pay my final respects to a good man because of your 'master's' dislike of me?"
"He never said...."
"I don't suppose I can see Maria, or even Yukihiko?"
"I'm sorry, I can't let you pass."
It was difficult to control his own distaste.
"This is ridiculous!"
"Please. sir. I don't want to use force."
"I won't force my way in, Taki. I'm just frustrated is all."
"If there's a note you'd like to pass along...?"
Yukifumi shook his head. There was no note to pass along. Even if he were to deliver a message, it wouldn't be repeatable in a public forum. And there was no sense in degrading a dead man's eulogy. He deserved to rest in peace.
"No, not at the moment."
But didn't he deserve a bit of respect too?
Aine mentioned Maria's parent's going a little over the top. She hadn't been able to leave the grounds until the day the girl's met for lunch. He could even hear the warning signs in Maria's voice when she talked to him over the phone. The pieces were there and they fit perfectly.
Her father was still angry with him for stealing away his daughter.
He'd done it in a manner that had, at the time, been quite heroic; barging into the house and screaming for Maria's attention. He'd loved her from the start. She was a part of him he missed deeply. A part he could not live without. Hurting her was the last thing he ever wanted to do.
But hurt her, he did.
Coming back for her after the contract was signed was the least he could do to show his love. To prove his worthiness. His commitment. To her...and to her father.
She left with him that night, vowing to stay with him for the rest of her life. They eloped not but a few days later and after six months, hard work and perseverance paid off. Yuki's career was taking off and they were going to start a family of their own.
After Yukihiko was born, Maria's parent's contacted them. Slowly the two families built a mutual understanding. Maria was happy to have her parents back in her life, to know that their son would have loving grandparents. He couldn't say that about his own family.
It seemed that old wounds were healing.
"Mr. Toudo, if there's no message, I'll have to ask you to step aside."
Perhaps Yuki had been mistaken.
"Of course. Thank you."
Yuki turned and headed down the sidewalk. Taki would not look after him. Usually well mannered, Yuki was not about to raise a fuss, no matter how tempted he was. But his frustration was starting to come out, his fist lashing out at tree trunks and fence posts as he walked. A curse or two also escaped before he could bite his tongue.
As he sat along the curb, he combed his hands through his long hair, 'If the photogs were here, they'd have a field day. Gods the headlines would be awful.'
Looking up at the passing gray clouds, Yuki closed his eyes and prayed. Prayed for a quick solution. Prayed that his wife and son were safe. Prayed that his suffering would come to an end.
Then the sky opened up and rain began to fall.
'Great, now the Armani will be ruined. Oh hell....'
But Yuki refused to move. He would have his wife and son back. They would be happy together.
He just had to figure out how to make it happen.
'Maria, I need your help, love. Please help me.'
