“Star… Star…” I was talking to Star on the phone as I was trying to do my work. I ran my paw through my hair again, frustrated from all the work. I looked over to the clock on my desk: 12:31 AM. “Dammit, Star!” I finally shouted, and she shut up; she wouldn't stop talking my ear off about my not meeting Shadow.
“Sunny, it's late and you should get some sleep,” I was about to say something when I heard a click at the other end of the phone and then silence.
“Damn her…” I muttered under my breath. She might've been my best friend, but she got a little crazy at times. I put the phone on its holder and turned back to my work; I had five more papers to go and wasn't about to give up now. I looked at my computer monitor and saw that my screensaver had come on; I moved the mouse, making my work come back up on the screen.
I got through the first three pages before my head dropped on the keyboard, making a horrible beeping noise, but I didn't care; I was tired…
The next day…
Riiiiiiiing.
I lifted my head up, groaning. “Ugh… Turn it off…” I moaned, taking my head of the keyboard.
Riiiiiiiing.
“Damn…” I whispered; I looked to the clock: 8:21 AM. “Holy shit! I'm late for work!”
Riiiiiiiing.
The answering machine picked up at the end of the third ring. “Sunny?! Where the hell are you?! It's 8:30! I opened at seven, I told you yesterday! Get your ass up and get down here, NOW!” She promptly hung the phone up and I cursed myself under my breath.
I saved the work on my computer and ran to my bathroom to turn the shower on. Great, no hot water. I jumped in and took a quick five minute shower, freezing my tail off. I hopped out, got dressed, and ran out of the apartment.
I was running down the street when I collided with something or someone; I fell to ground hard, grunting as I did. I looked up to see what the hold up was; it was Shadow again.
“Damn, watch where you're going, girl. You're gonna get yourself killed,” he retorted, eyeing my suspiciously as I hoisted myself up. “Not that you've already attempted that…”
“Ya know, it doesn't help that you're always in my way, either,” I remarked; this made his eyes flash and I stepped back. “I'm late for work…” I said, and pushed off, leaving him standing on the sidewalk.
When I got to the daycare at around 9, Star greeted me at the door, though not very friendly. “Where the hell have you been?!” she whispered loudly. “I called you ten times! Why didn't you answer your phone?!”
I was gonna tell her I fell asleep on my computer and forgot to set my alarm after talking to her all night, but thought the better of it. “I just slept in, that's all. I was busy last night and I forgot to set my alarm…” I said instead. At least the part of forgetting to set the alarm was truthful, because I really did forget to set it, just not for the reason I told her.
“Well, remember next time!” she turned around and picked up one of the puppies that had escaped from its crib. “Aren't they so cute?!” she squealed.
Comes back quick, I thought, but didn't hear what she had said to me.
“Sunny? Did you watch the news last night?” She asked again, waving a paw in front of my face.
I stared at the aqua hedgecat for a minute before saying, “No, I didn't.”
“You should've, seeing as how you were on it.” She said, sitting down, looking glum. She propped the small puppy up on her lap, stroking its back gently. “I guess you were right. Shadow did save you from Eggman's attack.”
“I told you! You know I wouldn't lie about something like that… I would come up with it as a story about being late for work, maybe, but after lunch? Hell no.” I said, taking the seat across from her.
She handed me the small puppy as she got up. I held it out away from me like a bomb. “Oh, come on, it's not gonna kill you.” She said, laughing lightly.
“I hate kids… Especially small ones that drool excessively…” I muttered, just as the puppy blew a bubble from its mouth; when it popped, he waved his paws around and started laughing.
“Then why did you agree to work with me?” Star asked, taking the puppy from my hands and putting him back in his crib. She then leaned against it with her hands on the rail.
I let out a big sigh of relief and Star rolled her eyes. “I didn't… You forced me, remember?” I reminded her.
I watched as her eyes shifted and she screwed her mouth up a little before saying, “Oh, yeah…”
“Whatever,” I laughed; I got up and went to sit at my computer. My computer was one thing I didn't hate. “I have to keep working on these things… I don't have a lot of time…”
Later…
I sighed, looking at the clock: 5:15 PM. “Will this day ever end?” I muttered to myself; I saw Star lean back in her chair, give me a “What-do-ya-mean?” look, and continue working on her stuff. I was halfway done with the stack of papers now; I only had about a hundred left, and if I brought 50 of them home with me again, I could get even more done and have the pile gone by the end of the week.
6:00 PM. “Finally!” I exclaimed, jumping out of the chair; I had been sitting in it so long, my ass had started to go numb. “I'm going home and bringing more of these papers with me to do there.”
“Yeah, yeah…” Star said, waving a hand at me. She had her eyes focused on her computer screen, the mouse moving at an excessive rate of speed. I laughed a little, causing her to look up at me, obviously annoyed, but I didn't care. Nothing made my day better than annoying Star at her work.
“We open at seven again tomorrow, right?” I asked, hitching my new bag up on my shoulder. Hopefully this one doesn't break… I thought.
“Yeah, and make sure you're awake this time?” She said, waving me on. “Now go, I have work to do.”
“Okay, okay. Don't have a cow, man.” I replied; that earned me a sneer. I walked out of the door into the bright sunshine, a big contrast compared to yesterday. I laughed. Thinking of the sunshine reminded me of my name. Why in the world did they ever call me that…? I thought, then I looked down at my paw. “Riiiiiiiiiiight…” And I laughed again.
“And what the hell's so funny?” I heard a voice ask; I turned around and it was Shadow again.
“Why are you always following me? I told you I can look after myself. You're not my guardian angel, nor my parents, so go…” I snorted, waving him on.
“Fine, you can keep a hold of yourself,” he said. “Just don't come calling my name the next time Eggman decides he wants to blow your head off…” And with that, he ran down the road again, the same way he left me last time.
“Damn hedgehog… Thinks he's so smart…” I stared after him, though there wasn't much to see than a small dot off in the distance. Such a mean one, he is, but yet there's some aura about him, some vibe I get that tells me he's a good guy… Deep down inside, at least… I just wish I could bring it out… I thought.
Little did I know that my vacation break would be exactly the right opportunity to do just that…
A/N: I hope you like this story so far as much as I've enjoyed writing it. I think this is much better than the first time I wrote it, all faced paced and shit, and Shadow was SO OOC. I hope I got him just a tiny bit more IC than last time. But that's up for you to decide. And you know how you do that? YOU REVIEW! Please…?
