Chapter Three:

"Hurry up girl," Fox said.

"Coming!" Kagome said, running to catch up to her.

"Can't you say, "Yes ma'am" or something? And thank the boiler you idiot! He's doing a lot for you," Fox said.

"Yes ma'am. Thank you sir!" Kagome said, bowing low.

"Good luck!" Komaji said, waving her off.

Kagome and Fox went to an elevator and got in. Fox pulled the lever to go up. She glared at Kagome out of the corner of her eye. What was Komaji thinking? She'll get turned into a chicken in no time, and I'll get blamed, Fox thought. The elevator flew up a few stairs before it halted to a stop. "Come on, stay close," Fox said. They stepped out of the elevator and Fox led her to another one. She pushed the button and tapped her foot while she waited. A big, ugly, fat, orange thing came up behind them. "That's the carrot spirit," Fox whispered. The elevator dinged and two fat pigs and a toad came out. They walked past the trio and the toad stopped.

"Fox, you smell like a human. Where is it?" the toad said.

Fox scooted ever so slightly in front of Kagome. "What are you talking about?" she said. "Do you smell this?" She pulled out her piece of chocolate. "Coffee flavored truffle. Only the best," she said.

The toad started drooling. "GIVE ME! Just a nibble!" he begged, jumping up and down, darting his tongue out.

"Nope. This is ALL mine!" Fox said. "If you wanna go up, pull the lever up." Kagome and the carrot slid into the elevator, Kagome being crushed. She reached out her skinny hand and made a grab for the lever. After a few attempts, she grabbed it, and pulled it up. Fox smiled then popped the truffle into her mouth, chewing slowly, and watching the toad look crest fallen.

Kagome looked at the carrot spirit out of the corner of her eye. I wish he wasn't so fat. I can't breath, she thought. After a few more minutes of too little air, the door opened. The carrot spirit stepped out and held the door open for her. Kagome ran out, bowed to him, and started off down the hall. She ran and ran and ran. She was in a full out sweat by the time she came to a huge door. She grabbed the handle and started pulling. "Not even going to knock? What a pathetic little girl," the doorknob said. Kagome screamed and jumped back. "Come in then," it said. The door opened, revealing at least 10 other doors that opened.

Kagome gulped and started walking. Why are there soooo many doors and hallways? She thought bitterly. Finally, up ahead she saw a huge door. Kagome wiped the sweat from her brow and dragged herself to the door. This time she knocked and it opened up, revealing a large comfy room. In the middle of the room, a tall, blonde haired girl with blue eyes sat at her desk. Her hair was pulled into a ponytail and she was wearing a dark green blouse and silky blue skirt that fell past her ankles. Her hair was slung over the chair and reached to about her lower back. "What do you want?" she asked.

"Please ma'am, I want a job!" Kagome asked.

"You ask me for a job? Your parents eat the food greedily like big fat hens and you ask me for a job? Go away! Unless you would rather be turned into a chick," Yubaba said.

"Please ma'am! I want a job!" Kagome persisted.

"Shut up," Yubaba said, sealing her mouth with a flick of her wrist. "Humans are worthless. I'm surprised you even got this far. Come now, who helped you out?" She unsealed her mouth.

"I want a job please!" Kagome yelled.

"WAAAAHHHHH!!!!!" a baby cried.

"Oh dear. You've woken the baby! Mommy's coming sweetie!" Yubaba said. She ran over to a curtained off place. "Give mummy a kiss." Yubaba jumped in and you could hear a kissing sound.

"Please! I want a job!" Kagome yelled.

"All right, all right. Just shut up!" Yubaba said. A piece of paper and a pen flew over to Kagome. "This is your contract. Sign your name on the dotted line." Kagome walked over to the fire place and sat on her butt. She placed it on the cold marble and wrote her name. Just as she finished, the paper flew back to Yubaba. "Kagome. What a pretty name," Yubaba said. She put a seal on the paper and said a small chant. Most of Kagome's kanji flew into her hand. "Your new name will be Suru," Yubaba said. "Answer me Suru!"

"Y-yes ma'am!" Suru said.

"Good. Now then, Haku!" Yubaba yelled.

Haku suddenly appeared and stood a few feet away from Kagome. "Yes?"

"Haku, go show her where to go work," Yubaba said, returning back to her desk. She pulled out some more papers and started scribbling stuff on them.

"What's your name?" Haku commanded.

Kagome was confused and scared. They met before, but he acted like they never had. "Kago-oh. Suru," she said, downcast.

"Okay Suru, follow me," Haku said, leading her out of the room. He led her back down the hall and through all the doors. They both got in the elevator and Haku pulled the lever down.

"Haku I-" Suru started.

"Don't talk to me. And you will address me as Master Haku," he said icily.

Suru looked down, tears flooding her eyes. Her only friend was treating her like dirt. (Little did she know that this would happen many more times in her future.) Suru looked at him out of the corner of her eye. What was wrong with him? They were getting along fine when they first met. She thought he was her friend. Suru squeezed her eyes shut and wiped the moisture away. She wouldn't cry in front of him. The elevator dinged and opened up. "Follow me," he commanded.

Suru was led into a big space full of toads, spirits, and women that wore very revealing robes. "What is she doing here?" some of them cried.

"Quiet. She will be working with you," Haku said.

"WHAT?"

"She's not going in our department."

"I'm not working with a human!"

"She already has a contract. Besides, if she doesn't work hard, boil her, fry her, eat her alive. I don't care," Haku said. This gained many pleased whispers. "Fox, you will take her in your department."

"WHAT!" she yelled.

Preview of the next chapter:

"I don't feel good," Suru said.

Fox felt her forehead. "Oh dear," she said. "Here, take this medicine and some food. Then off to bed," she said.
