Chapter 2 - Ebon strikes
----------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------
As Virgil and Richie flew to HQ to get supplies for their next patrol that evening they heard a scream. Being a super heroes they were they had no choice but to act on their duty and answer the distress call. They flew down the street and caught the very familiar sight of a shadow chasing a person, in this case a young woman. “Ebon's ALIVE?” Static asked exasperatedly, Gear rubbed his chin-guard on his helmet thoughtfully and ran an analysis on the shadow, he gasped; it WAS him!
“Yup, sure looks like it but-”
“Where's Hot-Streak?” they both finished and flew faster. They saw the woman run into a warehouse and the doors slammed shut. That's when they saw the windows light up with a spark of what looked like fire. “Hot-Streak!” they said and burst through the door. Ebon saw them and wasted no time in attacking them, still scorned by being defeated those years ago. As they fought they soon realized Ebon was back to his original self; bad news for him for both Static AND Gear had had a few changes over the years, both becoming stronger, better equipped and lethal.
Gear decided Static could handle their old enemy and went out to look for their other old enemy. What he saw shocked him; the girl he now identified as Alex was struggling to get away from the fiery brute and not getting burnt as he wrapped his flame engulfed hands around her wrist, she twisted and growled, “LET ME GO!” she demanded and tried jerking away, Hot-Streak saw nothing was working on her, she apparently resisted fire and it was certainly pissing him off,
“I'LL SHOW YOU!!” he threatened and threw her down. That's when Richie saw something he thought he'd never see from even Hot-Streak. As Alex was moving to get up Hot-Streak back-handed her, making her land on her rear and hold her injured cheek. As soon as Richie saw this he saw nothing else but a red haze rule over his vision. He was so over come with fury that by the time he came out of whatever spell he was in he was hovering over a bloody, cowering Hot-Streak striking his fist wherever he could. When he heard a whimper from Alex and a gasp of shock (pun!) from Static he caught himself and stopped. He was breathing hard and struggling to control himself. Static had never seen him act this way; even Gear himself was surprised; who knew he had it in him? Hot-Streak was out cold, not even groaning in pain anymore.
“G-Gear?” Static asked slowly, he was astonished at his normally happy-go-lucky and smart-witted friend, seeing his best friend beat someone to the point of unconsciousness was just shocking. Gear took a deep breath and straightened himself, he turned to Alex. “I-I'm sorry you had to see that… Are you alright?” he asked in both concern and slight embarrassment. Alex smiled at him through tear streaked eyes; seeing the tears made Richie's blood boil again but he forced himself to calm down.
Gear leaned down and helped Alex to her feet. “Thank you…” she whispered and blushed bashfully. Richie saw a bruise forming on her rosy cheek and frowned thoughtfully; out of concern and not thinking about what might happen with his actions he reached out and placed a gentle hand on her hurt cheek and wiped her tears away. Her gaze shot up to his eyes and saw them shimmer, was he sad? It made her want to hug him and tell him everything would be ok. Virgil saw the exchanges with great interest, it was painfully obvious they were both attracted to each other… he would enjoy watching their relationship unfold, not only because it would be nice for his friend to be the one with the female attraction for a change (and a breather for him) but of course also because he knew Richie and knew he might do something screwy and make Virgil's observation even more amusing…
Richie was about to say something when they heard sirens, Static jerked his attention to the open warehouse doors, “Come on Gear, we better go before the cops thinks we started something.” He said and gestured to the demolished warehouse doors lying about. Gear looked at his best friend and nodded, he turned to Alex, suddenly feeling as shy as he did the first time they were in class together,
“You… You had better go too…” he warned then before Alex could say anything he leapt into the air, fired his rockets and took off out the open door with Static. Alex watched his retreating form and rubbed the cheek he touched affectionately… unfortunately she forgot it was hurt and winced in pain. She sighed and ran out of the warehouse, leaving an unconscious Ebon and Hot-streak to the police.

Static looked at Gear with concern, Gear was still lost in his own world since they left the warehouse, “You okay bro?” he asked carefully, Richie blinked back into reality and sighed, shaking his head,
“It's just- I just can't stand seeing defenseless people, especially women get hurt like that, it really riles me up… especially if it's her…” he said and whispered the last part. Virgil nodded in agreement, missing the part whispered,
“I hope Alex will be okay…” he commented, Richie winced,
“We should have escorted her home…” he said guiltily, Virgil frowned thoughtfully,
“You wanna fly back? We may still be able to catch up and make sure she's okay…” Richie nodded,
“We had better… who knows what Ebon or Hot-Streak would do if they found her again.”
“Hmm, you're right, alright then let's go!”
As they soared they noticed the night war eerily calm, perhaps a foreboding prophecy of sorts for something big that would come in the future? Static glared into the night, something wasn't right but he decided to ignore it for now and cross that bridge when it came. When they reached the warehouse they tried staying out of sights of the befuddled police checking out the mess. Gear scanned the area and decided to try out his latest gadget and see through the walls, crates, and trucks… nothing, she was gone; he did however see her foot prints leading toward the suburbs. “That way.” He informed Static and they took off.
When they reached a small neighborhood that looked very familiar they paused and looked around, “Uh… V, isn't this were you live?” Richie asked, Virgil nodded and smirked, giving Richie a mischievous looked,
“Aw sorry man, I knew how much you were hoping she'd live near you…” he said slyly,
“Yeah I was- huh? HEY!” he complained, Virgil had to land for her nearly fell off his disc for laughing so hard, Richie glared, “Yeah, yeah laugh it up; you'll get yours bro…” he muttered and walked off toward the tracks, leaving a still cackling electro-magnetically-empowered-boy behind,
“Wait- laugh-stop Richie I'm just-giggle-playing!” Virgil said between chuckles and walked up to his fuming friend. “So…” Virgil began, calming down, not only for the respect of his friend but for his life as well, he now knew he didn't want to get on Gear's bad side…
“Hmph, well, here's her house… hold on a sec.” he informed and viewed inside the house, he smiled, “She's here, she's sleeping…” he said softly, Virgil nodded and they both headed back out.
“Hey Rich, I'm gunna head home and hit the sack… you ok to go home yourself?” Virgil asked with a mocking grin, Richie smirked and rolled his eyes,
“Yeah V, I'm pretty sure I can take care of myself… see-ya!” He said and took off. He headed to his house and absentmindedly rubbed his pocket containing the diary he picked up earlier. When he got home he crept in through his window, glad he was smart enough to leave his decoy this time and not have to explain himself to his parents again for coming home so late. He shut the window carefully and pulled off his new helmet and suit, making sure to turn off the amplifiers so they wouldn't run out of energy left alone throughout the night.
He folded his suit and opened a carefully constructed section of his closet to hide his suit, helmet, weapons and his other possessions he didn't want his parents finding about… yet… He walked to his bed while pulling off his under shirt and reopening the window, just noticing how hot it was inside the house. He stretched and heard the satisfying sound of his joints popping back into place and enjoying the feeling of his large muscles stretching to their limit before dropping his arms and relaxing into bed. That's when he remembered the book, he got out of bed and walked back to his closet, opening the compartment and retrieving the diary still in the suit's pocket. He closed his closet up and crawled back into bed. He eyed the small booklet and wondered if it would be right reading the girl's diary… surely it's not what a gentleman would do.
He bit his lip in anxiety, his curiosity swelling the more he gazed upon the book. Soon it became too much for him and he opened the book. `I'm so going to regret this… damn guilt…' he thought and skimmed through the book. So far nothing that interesting came up, she just seemed to jot down routine and common things such as the time she woke up, where she went, who she met and what bits of new information she learned. Suddenly something caught his eye, this was very interesting, he read on,

It had been exactly a year since the accident in my Uncle's chemical lab. I shouldn't have lied to the doctors when I said I felt fine; something is definitely not right. I have the strangest feeling I'm changing and not in the natural way. I feel…smarter lately, a LOT smarter, and faster too, it makes me dizzy quite often… I don't understand what is happening to me; just yesterday Eddy got me angry, so angry in fact the puddle of water beside me started moving, or maybe it was boiling I wasn't really looking… I'm sure glad he didn't see, I only saw because of my growing… abilities… it wasn't much but I'm sure I did it, but how is that possible?
Richie stared at the page, she was a- mutant? He knew about the X-Men of course but this was strange, they were born mutants. Exactly what kind of chemicals fell on her to cause her to mutate and gain powers like that? It sounded like she was hit by the big-bang gas but that couldn't be right… she got hit by whatever the “chemicals” were in 2002, that was 5 years ago, before the big-bang, the gas must have been in its infant stage of production then, maybe even in liquid form, that's what it sounded like. He turned the page and saw a recent entry, there were pages torn out but he decided not to think about that at the moment,

Five years… five years since the accident and now I know for sure I'm a mutant. I have powers… I'm glad I didn't mutate into something bad but how would I know? These powers scare me, I don't know how to control them and they seem to be growing, I don't even think I want to know more about them. I'm scared… if I don't get some kind of guidance I might hurt someone… I don't want to use them, I don't want to take the chance I might kill… maybe I am a monster? Well all I know is unless I can get some sort of control and knowledge of just exactly what I can do I cannot use any of my abilities, not even my apparent and absurd growth of intelligence… I must remain ignorant and if necessary lie…I'm scared.
That was the last entry, Richie frowned sadly; she was scared… of herself… That's terrible! He felt so bad and suddenly the guilt he was concerned about hit him like a rock and he groaned, he shouldn't have invaded her privacy but now that he knew… what was he going to do? He couldn't possible let such a beautiful girl live in fear and self hatred for the rest of her life. He was determined to help her. He placed the book under his pillow and shut his eyes, willing his over-active mind to shut down and let him sleep.
