Chapter 6: Kori Meets Jinx and the World Breaks
“Who is she?”
Raven smirked as Jinx poked and prodded Kori as if she were a living doll.
“She followed me. Can I keep her?”
Kori glanced between them, her expression flustered, confused, and worn all at once.
Jinx stepped back and cocked her head as if studying a sculpture. Finally, she fell back into the over-stuffed chairs the library offered as comfort. “I like her. She's on of the most interesting people I've met.”
“She hasn't said anything yet.” Raven slipped her hood off, allowing her purple hair to shake free.
Jinx turned to her with a serious face. “What's with the sweatshirt?”
Raven hesitated for a split second before lying her head on the armrest, a smile playing across her face. “I'm a cold person.”
“No kidding,” Jinx's flat tone and half-lidded glare proved she didn't believe her.
“Um…” Kori started. The pink-haired girl instantly snapped her head in her direction.
“Ah, Kori was it?” Out of the corner of her eye, Kori saw Raven relax. “come and sit. I wish to know every intimate detail of your life.”
Raven cast her a sympathetic look. “Whatever you don't tell her, she'll find out later.”
Jinx ignored her. “Let's start with the basics. Where are you from?”
Kori sat in the cushioned seat stiffly, resting her palms on the armrests. “It's a small country named Tamaran.”
“Oo. Foreign girl. Tell me, no accent?”
“No. I was taught to speak English at a very young age.”
“So how do you like school?”
“It's an interesting place. There are many new friends to make and people to meet.”
Jinx turned to Raven with a disbelieving gaze. “Is she always so cheerful?”
Raven ignored her. “Kori has boy trouble.”
Instantly the pink-haired goth perked up. She leaned into Kori, her eyes wide with interest. “Who? Why? How? What?”
Kori cast Raven a helpless glance. “I do not understand your questions.”
She gave an exasperated look. “Who's the boy? Whydo you like him? How did you meet? And what are you going to do next?”
In an instant the story tumbled from Kori's lips. Being lost, the open locker, Dick's amazing eyes. She told them how she had conversed with him for a few minutes before he pointed her towards her class. Jinx listened carefully, taking in each word like forensic scientist would evidence. Finally, Kori finished, a light blush painting her cheeks.
“So…?” Jinx said expectantly.
“So…what?” Kori asked carefully.
“You didn't tell me what you're going to do about him!”
“Oh, yes…”
“Don't leave her hanging,” Raven warned, “She'll stalk him for you.”
Kori gave a nervous chuckle. “I do not know. I asked friend Raven to help, but she does not know much on the subject.”
“Dick Grayson…” Kori was sure that if Jinx had a goatee, she would've stroked it. “He has parties about every other weekend (the rich type, you know.) Make friends. Play nice. As an added bonus, you get to show up Kitten.”
“Is this `Kitten' bad?”
“If you call snobby, over-dressed, spoiled brat bad, then yes,” Raven butted in cleanly. “She's the most popular and least-like girl in school. She has her heart set on Dick, though she has a boyfriend.”
“Her dad's a genetic scientist and has a strange obsession with bugs.” Jinx continued. She studied her cuticles carefully while talking. “He has a lot of money. Kitten gets whatever she wants. Even when she gets in trouble, her dad gets her out in five minutes or less. Five times she's shoplifted, ten times she's been at the mall instead of school, and three times she's taken Daddy's care for a joy ride (one time she's crashed it.) All times nothing happened to her.” She glanced up, giving a shrug to Kori and Raven's surprised faces. “I did a search on her police file.”
“Anyway,” Raven turned back to Kori. “She's virtually untouchable-”
“Aw, you could kick her ass,” Jinx said jokingly.
“-so mess around with Dick and she'll make your life a living hell.”
Jinx glanced at the clock on the wall. “Well, my time is u. It's nearly five. I gotta head home.”
“I should also be going home,” Kori said, “My k'norfka will be waiting for me.”
Both girls raised an eyebrow.
“He is my guardian,” she explained sheepishly, “It is a word from my country.”
“Whatever,” Jinx said, “I'll see you guys later.”
Kori stood. “I think I shall leave to…” she glanced at Raven. “I do not think I know this part of town. Perhaps you could help me?”
Raven let out a breathy sigh. “Why not? Let's go.”
Kori grinned. Raven stood and pulled her hood up. They walked out when Kori began talking again (much to Raven's dismay.)
“You make strange friends,” she said.
“Only Gar and Jinx. I don't think I'll attract many normal people.”
“You have no other friends?” Kori sounded absolutely horrified at the thought.
“Nope.”
“But you must have many companions!”
“I've made four friends in a week. I'm good.”
Raven was a bit taken back. Kori was actually surprised that she didn't have many friends? But it had been a simple fact all her life: she didn't make friends.
“Who do you talk to when you are alone? Frightened? Worried?”
“No one,” she said quickly before the red head could continue.
“What of your parents?”
Beneath her hood, she cringed. “My dad and I don't get along.” There. Enough said. Stop asking questions.
“What of your mother?”
A hundred words could've tumbled out. Everything she'd held in for six years could've spilled out like some horrible sticky mess. But instead she spoke the two simple words that she always said when asked about her mother.
“She's dead.”
Kori's eyes went wide as she took in the words. What could she say? She never really lost anyone (her parents may be thousands of miles away, but it was hardly the same as them being dead.) She glanced at the roads and realized she knew exactly where she was. Glancing at Raven, she spoke quietly, stating she needed to get home. Raven grunted in reply and waved a hand at her.
In truth, just admitting to her `new friend' that her mother was dead had brought back too many emotions. Her mother had protected her for her first ten years. Every beating, every insult, hell, everything had been blocked out thanks to her mother. And then one day, someone had been at the door telling her her mother was dead. Some idiot drunk driver hadn't seen her crossing the street and plowed right through her. Raven had known, though. She didn't know how, but she knew her mother couldn't take the abuse anymore. Raven had honestly considered suicide many times, but she kept herself alive because of one thing: she wanted to survive where her mother hadn't.
So far, she'd done it.
But she had an odd inkling of fear that her life was about to break down.
Authoress Time:
One of my longer chapters! Yay!
Ugh, if you haven't read The White Rose yet by Jessemudflap then you are so screwed. I love that story. One of the best.
If anyone's looked at my bio, they've noticed a long list of Teen Titans stories that I want to write.
Screw all those.
I've got two stories that I've gotten kinda excited about:
Another AU, but this one is slightly different and mostly Beast Boy and Raven centered.
One I've thought about for a while where the Titans are forced to take care of a baby demon.
I'll get either up and start writing. Don't worry, I won't abandon this.
Reviews:
Nevermore The Raven- Whee! My story's good enough to be reviewed!
RavenFlyingSolo- Yes, many perverted thoughts ran through my head when I wrote that, but I'll save the jokes for another chapter.
Bunnysquirrel- Seriousness doesn't really come until Raven goes to the party, but you don't need to know what happens then…
meangirl101- Short but sweet. I like.
Lily of the Shadow- I know, I'm awesome. I'm really good at sticking in humor. I'm not big on serious moments. They're so… serious.
Pyrotechnic- No… I've got better plans for Kitten… And Roy.
Mad Mauser- I'd say they got along pretty well, don't you?
BlackBloodyTears- I'm trying to update once a week, so look for that.
TerraTitan27- What can I say? I like conversation, just not with a real person.
animeobsessed3191- I might have some Speedy/Aqualad in my next AU, but I'm just no good at yaoi writing, plus he doesn't fit the bill in this one.
raven rocks- It's in non-anime because it isn't technically anime. It's like with Code Lyoko (French not Japanese.) Thanks for putting a bunch of words together for me! I feel special!
