Chapter Five: Fog

There was an unusual fog that night. As the sun fell below the horizon it covered the grounds, creating a ghostly sea. Against habit, the day students remained in their dorm, feeling a prickling on their necks. The night class was agitated sensing something wrong beyond their boundaries. Two figures, cloaked and hooded, stole in; three left.

The next morning Yuki realized that Ren was gone. The room was quiet, the futon stored away as if Ren never slept on it. In the middle of the floor, though, was a rose. When Yuki picked it up it was sticky with something. Yuki looked at her hand and saw the rust colored stain of old blood. Dropping the rose she whirled around and saw the note. All it said was:

Called away on urgent business. Be back soon. Love, Ren

Looking up she noticed that Kaname had come in the room and was picking up the rose. Yuki saw him smell it and frown. Zero coughed from the doorway.

“Is that what I think it is?” he asked Kaname. Kaname tipped his head in assent. Looking satisfied Zero walked out.

“Wait! Zero what…what do you mean,” Yuki called out but Zero was already gone. “Kaname?” she asked turning towards him imploringly.

“Your sister was challenged.” Yuki was confused.

“Challenged?”

“By another witch. This rose signifies that someone has a bone to pick with her and her blood on it says she accepted it.” Yuki didn't register anything after the word witch.

“Another witch? Does that mean…Ren…a witch? As in rides a broomstick, black cat witch?” Kaname gave her a half-smile.

“Yes your sister is a witch. Whether or not she rides a broomstick is something you'll have to ask her.” Yuki stared at him, trying to comprehend this. “I have book on witches, would you like to borrow it?” Kaname asked. Yuki nodded in silence. “I'll get it for you then.”

It was the second time in a month that someone stayed up reading about witches but it wasn't hard for Yuki by a long shot. The hard part was connecting the fascinating, exciting and mysterious witch that was described with her loving, quiet sister. All that was put aside when she finished reading about challenges. The book said the when one witch was angry with another witch they would issue a challenge. Two witnesses would bring the rose and ask if the challengee agreed. The person would swear by cutting their hand on the thorns. Here was where the book got vague, only mentioning that magic was used to solve the dispute and it was done in the shadowed hall. However the book emphatically said that challenges were dangerous and often cost one of the witches their life. Whoever won the challenge would take the higher position in society. Yuki spent the next week filled with ever increasing anxiety. A school holiday month was coming up and Yuki decided that if Ren wasn't back by then she'd go and look for her.

It was the first night of the holiday month that Kaname sensed her presence. Unable to help himself he snuck over to her room and opened the balcony door. Being a vampire he could see much better in the dark than a human, and so he saw the form lying on the futon.

“I'm guessing you won,” he said knowing that she wasn't asleep.

“Yes,” she croaked. Kaname's brow creased in concern.

“Yuki knows. She's been worried about you,” he accused.

“I'm sure she has,” Ren started coughing. After getting herself under control she finished, “It took me awhile to get away from my nurse.” She said hoarsely with a wry tone to her voice.

“I can tell why. You sound terrible.” Ren switched on a light and then he saw everything. Her body was emaciated, dark circles lay under eyes, and her hair hung dull around her body. “You look terrible too,” he added.

“You see should her,” A triumphant grin spread across her face. “Besides the important fact is that I won. I'll be good as new after a hot bath and day or two more of rest.”

“You're very optimistic. By the way…I never asked what clan you were a part of,” Kaname leaned against the wall and looked at her under half-lidded eyes.

“That is for me to know and you to find out,” she said impertinently. He felt a flush of impatience. Kaname was not used to people speaking to him in that way. Suddenly a thought occurred to him and he smiled arrogantly,

“Are you suggesting I check myself…it would be easy in this condition.” Kaname got the response he was looking for when she blushed crimson.

“No I am suggesting that you wait until the Darkhour Ball, since I can only assume you will be in attendance,”

“I will as will the rest of the night class.” He watched her eyes dip open and close.

“Mmm, that will be amusing,” was the last thing she said before she passed out. Kaname turned to leave but stopped. He walked over to her and gently pulled the covers up. Unable to resist, he brushed the hair away from her face.

Yuki was overjoyed the next morning to find Ren back. She searched her sister for any type of injury but found only that she was excessively tired. For the next few days Yuki nursed Ren diligently. Yuki tried to be patient and not ask a million questions at once but it was hard. Finally Ren appeared to be better and told Yuki she could ask all the questions that she wanted. She answered every single question Yuki had in her usual quiet and serious manner. After their session Yuki thought that her questions were done with until two people arrived for Ren.
