“Edana,” Farf said calmly. “You know as well as I do, that time isn't linear in certain places.”
“There are still guidelines,” Blaze said.
“Honestly, Edana, if I knew the answer I would be more than happy to tell you. But I don't,” Gwynedd said. “All I know is that I feel myself in her. I know she's Rhiannon.”
Blaze sighed heavily. “I wasn't disputing that, Gwynedd. But you have to admit that it's really damn odd that she ended up with me.”
“I'm thrilled she did, Edana,” Gwynedd said quietly. “I can't think of anyone else who would have protected her like you and your team has. Who would have raised her not to fear her talents. Trained her to use them to the best of her abilities.”
“Gods, Gwyn, I made her a killer,” Blaze said. “Not intentionally. Just by sheer association with me.”
“With us,” Sunny corrected. “We've raised her as much as you have, Goddess.”
“I may have a theory as to how this managed to happen,” the man suddenly standing behind Gwynedd said.
“Taliesin,” Blaze snarled.
“You may growl at me at a later time for this mess, Edana.”
“Fine,” she spat. “Out with it.”
“Is that any way to address and old compatriot?”
“It is when said individual tried to trick me into sending him to his true death.”
“A valid point,” he said, his hands hovering a fraction of an inch away from Gwynedd's shoulders. “Two people just today have made me cognizant of the fact that I should have informed you of my reasons and asked you outright.”
Skye, who had been watching the body language of everyone rather than listening to the conversation, spoke up.
“You can't touch her,” she said, eyeing Gwynedd and Taliesin shrewdly. Both of them stiffened slightly then relaxed. Taliesin smiled bitterly.
“You are very observant. Sadly, you are correct.”
Blaze glared at the couple. Because it was painfully obvious to her now that they were a couple. “Oh, gods damn it, Tal! Why didn't you just tell me, you idiot?”
“Due to ingrained terror that you would laugh me off the planet,” Taliesin said.
Blaze sighed and raked her hands through her hair. “Yeah, a couple of years ago that would have been a fair thought to have.”
“Gran, what the hell is going on? Why can't he touch her?” Star asked.
It was Skye who answered her. “She's a faerie.”
Star looked at her sister dubiously. Skye rolled her eyes when she caught the thought going through Star's mind.
“You're thinking of a pixie. The Sidhe are a completely different group.”
“Think closer to Morrigan instead of Tinkerbell,” Farf clarified. “But not as scary.”
“I don't know, Tinkerbell is pretty damn scary,” Sunny said with a grin.
Farf playfully threw a dagger at him, which Sunny caught using his hair. The women in the room sighed and rolled their eyes.
“Wait a second, Morrigan is a goddess. Isn't she?” Star asked.
“That she is. She's also one of the faerie queens. Of which there are hundreds, by the way. Actually, Morrigan is kind of the faerie queen as she rules over everyone else. Gwynedd is one, as well as . . . others,” Farf said evasively.
“It still doesn't explain to me why they can't touch each other,” Star said, sounding exasperated.
“The living or the dead can pass freely into the fey realms. They often do so without realizing they've done it,” Taliesin explained. “But those of us who are both can only come into physical contact with them twice a year at Beltane and Samhain.”
“Oh, that has got to just suck,” Star said.
Taliesin smiled somewhat bitterly. “You have absolutely no comprehension as to how much, young lady.”
“Back to your theory, Tal,” Blaze said impatiently.
“Yes. The theory. It's been widely surmised that Bricru was the one responsible for Rhiannon's disappearance.”
“That's a given,” Blaze said. “It still doesn't explain how she wound up here with me.”
“I'm coming to that, Edana,” Taliesin said. “We think that, at least to some degree, he can bend time.”
“Ah,” Farf said, nodding. “That would be why he keeps slipping through the cracks.”
“Indeed it would seem so.”
“The point, Tal,” Blaze said.
“The point is, she was taken from her family, through time, and left with the people who would take her natural gifts the worst possible way.”
“That still doesn't explain how she came to us,” Skye said.
“Again, all I have is a theory. However, I feel it is a valid one. I believe that, since Bricru is essentially human, with the exception of the time alteration ability and telepathy, that he misjudged locations.”
“What do you mean by that?” Sunny asked.
“Perhaps misjudgment of locations was not the proper phrase to use. The compound is magickally guarded and sealed to all but the strongest of us aside from those Edana gives permission to enter. Therefore, anyone running a quick scan and not actively searching for it would not register it as being a point of interest. Which, I am certain, was the initial plan.”
“So, what exactly does that mean?” Star asked.
“It means he would have missed this as a point of power,” Farf said.
“Precisely. I think that when Rhiannon was fleeing to save her own life, she locked onto the compound as the closest source of the kind of power she had within herself. Not the exact type of power but close enough that she thought she might be safe here.”
“Then she came to us by way of a happy accident,” Sunny said.
“There are no such things as accidents,” Taliesin said. “All things are connected.”
“Okay, we have the how, when, where and part of the why. We don't have the what part as of yet,” Sunny said.
“Huh?” Farf said.
“What do we do with the situation?” Sunny clarified.
“I believe that is completely Rhiannon's decision. As much as I want to bring her back home with me, she has said very clearly that she considers you and the twins her mothers, Edana. She also considers this gentleman to be her father,” Gwynedd said, nodding toward Sunny. “Therefore, I doubt she would want to leave you. I would, however, be most pleased if you bring her with you when you visit your former home.”
“That was my intention. Mom said she wanted everyone.”
“And you aren't going to argue with her this time?” Farf asked, his eyebrows going up in question. “Are you feeling well, Edana?”
“Jeirn.”
“Yes?”
“I happen to like you this particular incarnation,” Blaze said, smiling mischievously.
“What's your point?”
“Don't make me incinerate you just yet.”
