Just Let Me - Chapter 6 by kamibukurosama
Ran held Ken as if he'd disappear if he let go. Ken screamed through his tears into Ran's chest. The reason why Ken was crying wasn't because he loved Reiko. It wasn't even because he'd miss her terribly. It was because he felt Reiko was exactly like him. His mirror, that died. Ken was deathly scared to see how he would end up. That he would end up like Reiko, enjoying his life of killing, feeling little remorse for his actions, and end up brutally murdered, destined for hell.
This where things will be different! I have to live for myself, for the sake of others, to be with Ran... No more of this bullshit, wallowing in self-pity. Hidaka, you asshole, you have Ran! He loves you... I love him... "Ran..." he whispered into his chest. Placing his face directly in front of Ran's chest where he could hear the heartbeat, he listened. This heart didn't stop beating, unlike the one he ripped out earlier. As long as this beats, I'll be fine. "Ran, I'm sorry... I-" "Shh. I know. Don't worry, I'll always be there. If you let me."
Ken realized that Ran offered his forgiveness and was asking for his in return. Ken bawled harder into Ran's chest. "Ken..." said Ran a little sternly. Realizing he was making too much of a scene, Ken remembered himself and stood up, wiping the tears from his eyes. Ran looked into Ken's eyes. That little flame that symbolized Ken's passion for everyday had returned. No longer would the dead, barren, hopeless look ever be seen in the sparkling brown gems. Not if Ran had a still a single breath in him.
"Let's go back..." murmured Ran.
Putting their arms around each other for support, they turned to Omi and Yohji who were waiting to leave. Out of nowhere, Yohji dove to the ground, narrowly missing a boomerang. Omi ran to the side to avoid a pair of cards cutting his head off. They flew into a tree, embedding themselves nearly halfway in. "Tarot cards?" Omi asked, wide-eyed. "KEN!" screamed Ran as arrows began flying towards the former goalie. Ken heeded just in time to see bolts being launched from a violin at him.
"Who are you?!" yelled Omi, desperately shooting at the three masked persons who were attacking them. A fourth person appeared from behind a tree. He unsheathed a katana and replied, "Weiß." Ran was stunned. Masaka... they can't be... "We are Weiß!" announced the man, louder. He turned to Ran and slashed. Ran instinctively put up his own katana and a duel began. The sounds of steel clashing on steel could be heard.
"What do you mean, Weiß?!" yelled Yohji, trying to fend off the man with the boomerang. "We won't let you use our name!" cried Omi. "Your name? Haha, don't make me laugh! Oh, you must be Persia's brats. How pathetic!" Omi was shocked and went flying as the boomerang hit him head-on. "Omiiii!" cried Yohji as he ran to him. Yohji fell near Omi as an arrow from the violin-wielding criminal hit his leg. Ken was too busy running from tarot cards that threatened to cut him into little slices. In the meantime, the two katana users fought. The leader suddenly spun and hit Ran's spine with his katana's hilt. Ran's katana went flying.
"No way... he out-fought Ran... " whispered Ken, completely taken by surprise. "You still don't understand do you?" said the masked man to Ran. Ran's eyes grew wide in realization who it was. Possibly the only person who could beat him, his own master, "Shion..." "I'm disappointed in you, Ran..." he said chuckling to an unarmed Ran. "Shall we tell them their fortunes?" asked the man holding the deadly tarot cards. He pulled the top one and showed it to them. The Fool. Meaning vulnerability, naiveté and unrealistic ideals. "Suits them, doesn't it?" said the other. "Fools for thinking they could be worthy of the name Weiß!" With that, they swiftly disappeared into the night.
"NO! Wait! You're alive...!? Shion! SHION!!" cried Ran into the darkness. "It can't be..." he whispered to the soft breeze. He looked up at the two other cards that sliced into the tree. The Tower, sudden and unforeseen disruption, catastrophe. The Devil, but it was upside down, thus meaning weakness, fear, but still seeking higher forces leading to realization and release bondage. Indicating progress in dealing with negative forces.

Back at the trailer flower shop, the four young men assembled inside the mission room, with Birman present as well. "Have you familiarized yourselves with the city now?" she asked. "Have you found any information about the past incident?" asked Ran. Birman shook her head, "We've looked into that and found absolutely nothing..." "That's bullshit!" exploded Ran. The others were surprised at Ran's show of raw emotion. Obviously this meant a lot to him. "Shion was the Kritiker leader in Sendai! You must have information!" "All of Kritiker's records from that time were destroyed. No one currently knows anything about that man" she replied.
"Then Manx knows! She was there under the name of Erika!" countered Ran. The poor man was desperate to find any leads. "Manx is on a top-secret project. She cannot be contacted." "Birman, damnit, you're hiding it from us!" he accused. Ran's usually firm eyes were wild and wide. That couldn't have been Shion! He was my mentor and master. That's not the Shion I knew. NO, he can't be... alive...
"Will you hear the mission, or won't you?" she barked. "Just start the tape Birman," said Omi, slightly annoyed. Persia on the tape explained their next mission. "Weiß! There is a popular tourist mansion in Kanazawa. Women and girls aged from 5 to 20 are disappearing and the one thing they all have in common in going into that mansion, called Yuuki Castle, and never returning.
"Because of the abundance of indirect evidence, it is assumed that these persons are being killed inside this mansion. The Yuuki Castle used to be a vacation house for the Takatori family but at the time, politician Takatori Soun has taken it for his personal residence. His political power is still in effect and therefore the Kanazawa police can do nothing. Your mission is to find the murderers and eliminate them. That is all!"
"Eeh? Takatori? The same Takatori's we busted?" asked Yohji. "Bah, everywhere we go, they're always involved" spat Ken. Omi was a little more concerned, having a bit of a history with the infamous family, his family... "Who is Takatori Soun?" he asked quietly. "To our knowledge, he is the third cousin of Takatori Reiji. Making him an uncle of yours, Omi. But a distant one at most." Omi nodded. "Takatori Soun was in charge of the entire Takatori cooperation until he left it to Reiji. Supposedly he is suffering from a stroke he has about ten years ago and is bedridden. Soun is also a patron for traditional crafts and has many workshops in his mansion. Shops for silk-dyeing, porcelain, doll-making and such."
"So our target is Takatori Soun? A bedridden old man?" asked Omi. "No, your mission is to find the murderers and to see if Soun is a target as well," said Birman. "No problem Omittchi," said Yohji, "lucky for them, they're gonna get flowers" adding a wink. Birman left shortly after. Ken looked over to Ran who was fixated on his seat, his eyes glued to some far off dark spot in the room. Yohji and Omi left to fix a fake order to deliver to the mansion.
"Ran...?" whispered Ken. Those violet eyes that were full of love and compassion were now barren and confused. "Who's Shion?" he asked quietly. Ran finally looked up and saw soft, comforting brown eyes. Eyes that offered strength and protection. Ken took Ran's hand and made him stand so he could embrace the tall redhead. Ken led Ran to his motorcycle parked outside. Making a numb Ran sit and put on a helmet, Ken rode them back to the hotel and took Ran up to his room.
Ken sat down on the bed, arranging Ran so that he could cradle Ran's head in his lap. "Ran? You do need to talk?" he asked quietly, stroking the silky strands of crimson hair. Ken's bronzed hand stroked down the soft cheek, quickly looking into Ran's eyes when he felt tears fall over his fingers. "Oh, Ran..." gasped Ken, hugging Ran tighter. "After Aya's accident, I sort of wandered around, looking for anything to pay for her bills. Kritiker eventually found me when I was near my breaking point. I didn't know who they were, but they promised to pay for her bills and help me to get Takatori Reiji. I was to be trained by a group in Sendai at the Aoba shrine. There I met Shion, where to teach me patience and control, taught me flower arranging, and eventually how to use a katana.
"I admired the man. Everything he said, taught me became part of who I am today. Shion left me my katana. And with that, he told me to not draw it. And if I must draw it, then draw it only to let people live... And after I broke that promise, I felt like there was nothing left to hold on to.
"Not too long after he left me his katana, we had a mission. There were two other members beside Shion and myself. One of the members had questionable mental issues and was brought along for the mission nonetheless. We were to find information and rescue some hostages. Things suddenly went horribly wrong, that man turned and killed his partner. The building we were in exploded and that was the last I ever saw of them. I have never heard or seen Shion so I assumed he was dead. From there, I came to Tokyo, joined Crashers, and eventually met you and Weiß."
"And that was the same Shion who trained you?" asked Ken, softly stroking the red strands, trying to give as much comfort to the distraught swordsman. "It is and it isn't. They are the same person, but I don't know the one that attacked. Shion was a man I respected and admired with every fiber of my being. But that man there... he... was... not Shion..."
