Chapter Summary: The Preliminary training for the Children of Alvis is over, and it is time for the real training to begin. The Festums, however, have other plans, and when an attack is made against the Encampment, Yukimura experiences the Siegfried system first hand, and two other rookies pilot the Fafners for the first time in a battle situation. In the meantime, despite the efforts of the veteran pilots, Mt. Fuji erupts, spewing hundreds of tons of MIR elements into the atmosphere, rendering all of Japan unable to produce children naturally. The gears of fate are turning, and the only question now, is who among the new recruits will embrace this new existence of war?

Part 8: Battle
“Transport Shuttle Bethor, access clearance code 3R35 please stand by…”
“Roger that. Standing by.”
Echizen leaned back into the seat, his fingers tapping impatiently at the plastic armrest. Tawny eyes flashed dangerously under green-black bangs as he waited for the shuttle to dock. Beside him, Yukimura fidgeted nervously, glancing from side to side between his commanding officer and the other pilots and officers sitting around them.
“So…” Eiji said, leaning across Inui's seat to look at Echizen, “What are we going to do when we dock?”
“We will disembark, collect our bags, and go to our barracks. Trainees will set up supplies, while Commanding officers oversee and plan,” was Echizen's curt reply.
“Nya! What are you going to do, Ochibi?”
Echizen's shoulders stiffened, and the veteran pilots and the other officers fell silent. “Do not call me that,” the teen said coolly, “And what I will do when we disembark is of no concern to you, Rookie.”
The veteran pilots and officers breathed sighs of relief, and the rest of the trip was uneventful.

“Mark Sien ready,” Echizen's monotone came over the speakers.
“Mark Krisht reday,” the Mark Krisht pilot said.
“Mark Elfe ready,” another pilot said.
“Very well,” Kakyou said into the microphone from the observation chamber, “Beginning simulation at level three. Three Sphinx Types at ninety kilometers and closing.”
“Target sighted,” Echizen said.
“Target sighted,” Mark Krisht said.
“Target sighted,” Mark Elfe said.
“Begin when ready.”
“Roger!” the four barked.
Outside, the Trainees watched as their commanders utilized the simulations in ways they had no idea that Fafners could be utilized. They watched as the Veteran Pilots ran through the simulations, only running into trouble at level ten and above. Almost three hours later, the three pilots left the simulators, and the trainees rushed forward with towels and water to their respective sponsors.
Echizen accepted the water from Yukimura with a nod and called, “The following trainees will begin simulation training! Sanada, Inui, Tachibana, Youhei, and Gakuto! The rest of you, thirty laps around the perimeter of the camp!”
The trainees scattered.

Yukimura wasn't quite sure how he ended up being the pilot in the Siegfried System when the klaxons began to wail. All he knew was that at one point, he and Tezuka had been in the CDC, leaning more about the systems and monitoring the camp, and then the computers detected the Festum. The next thing he knew, he was inside the Siegfried System, Tezuka was manning the console monitoring the id implants in the personnel at the camp, and three veteran pilots and a Rookie were in their Fafners and the Crossing had been activated.
“Are you scared?” Kakyou's voice came clearly across the link.
“Terrified,” Yukimura said.
“You'll be fine,” he said, “Just stay calm and monitor the pilots like you learned, and everything will be fine.”
Yukimura nodded. “Alright…”

Atobe found himself to be the lucky Rookie thrown into the battle.
“Open your eyes,” Yukimura said over the link.
“My eyes are open!” Atobe replied.
“Your eyes are the Fafner's eyes,” Yukimura said, “Open Fafner's eyes!”
Echizen sat in the cockpit of the Mark Sien, his eyes closed, and his entire body relaxed. His eyes opened slightly and he murmured, “Calm down. Remember that your emotions will make things much more difficult on you if you get over heated.” His eyes closed slowly.
Inside the Siegfried System, Yukimura stared at the calculations for the Mark Sien. `Incredible…' he thought, `Echizen-kun is completely relaxed…'
A quiet strain of laughter drifted through his mind and he blinked. “E-Echizen-kun?” he said cautiously.
“Sorry,” Echizen's voice held a hint of amusement, “It's always fun to see the reactions of rookies…”
“Shut up, Echizen!” Atobe snarled.
Unrepentant laughter was the veteran pilots' only response toward the Hyoutei Gakuen third year's tension fueled anger.

“Oh my god…”
“Commander!”
“What is it?”
“The sensors we've placed in Mt. Fuji are going haywire! The volcano is going to erupt!”
“WHAT?!” Kakyou was on the comlink instantly. “Mark Elfe, Mark Krisht, move out. You're going to Japan to oversee the evacuations. And hurry! Mark Sien, equip with the Linderung and stand by for lift off! You will be accompanying Mark Elfe and Mark Krisht.”
“Roger!” three teenage voices barked.

“Sector one clear.”
“Charges are set.”
“67.43% of the civilians are accounted for, 6.32% of he children are missing.”
“Magma level is rising. We don't have much time before the mountain blows its top. I estimate about two hours.”
“73.42% of the civilians are now accounted for! 4.021% of the children are still missing!”
“Damn! The magma level is rising faster than I thought! Hurry it up!”
“76.23% of the civilians are accounted for! 3.876% of the children are missing!”
“The magma level is rising at an unprecedented rate! Echizen, what do we do?!”
“Set up the goddamn Welle Shields and pray to God that it will prevent the MIR elements from entering the atmosphere! Keichi, enemy 300 kilometers from your 7. Intercept and engage.”
“Roger. Mark Elfe, lifting off.”
“Roger. Powering up charges. Preparing to unfold Welle Shield.”

The Festum hardly seemed to notice the energy blasts from the Mark XI's Garum-44, and Atobe continued to fire shot after shot, doggedly dodging the dark energy attacks that would assimilate anything it came into contact with. The Festum raised its arms and the fingers elongated to wrap around the Mark XI's arms and legs and raised it into the air and immediately slammed it into the ground. Atobe grunted, and in the Siegfried System, Yukimura jerked in pain.
Kakyou opened the link to Kaede in the hanger and said, “Send out Fuji.”
“Youkai.”
In the Hanger, a woman with reed eyes and green-black hair in with a lab coat thrown over the Alvis uniform sighed and turned to look at the trainees, all of whom were already in their synergetic suits due to the interrupted simulation training. She looked at Fuji.
“Well, Rookie,” Kaede said, “You heard the Commander. Get in. You'll be taking the Mark XII.”
Fuji nodded and got onto the lift.

“Unfolding Welle Shield!”
“Enemy eliminated. Sensors indicate that a Priya form is making its way toward us!”
“98.234% of the cilvilians can be accounted for. We don't have any more time. I'll draw off the swarm. Mark Elfe, force the head out of hiding, move it toward Mark Krist, then find its core and destroy it! Mark Krisht, set up the secondary Welle Shield, then hold the Priya Form off with Aegis!”
“Youkai!”

The screens turned from red to blue.
“Enemy has been eliminated! Minimal damage to Mark XI and Mark XII. Minor damage to sector 4 of the Island.”
Kakyou opened the link to the Siegfried System. “Well, Yukimura, how did you like your first battle?”
Yukimura glared. “No one told me I would feel what the pilots felt.”
Kakyou smiled. “That's the Siegfried System for you.”
“No offense sir, but shut up.”
The CDC was filled with tense but relieved laughter.
Then a woman's voice called, “Sir! Report from Mark Sien! Mt. Fuji has erupted! Mark Elfe activated Fenrir to destroy and enemy, and Mark Krisht has suffered major damage on the left side, and the pilot is in critical condition. Mark Sein suffered minor damage and is missing its right hand, which was amputated to prevent the rest of the unit and the pilot from being assimilated, the pilot is unharmed.”
Silence filled the CDC. Kakyou stood up. “Send out Mark Fae and Mark Sidhe with Mark XIII and Mark XIV and a med team and a supply wagon.”
“Roger!”
And so it began…
